Hey guys, I need some help deciding which laptop to buy coz I need it for college this year in Canada. I'd really like to know your suggestions about what processor, graphics card and ram combo I should go in for....yea I want a gfx card coz I play a LOT of games....
(No I'm not gonna buy a iBook now....maybe next year)
Dz your comments on this would be much appreciated as would anyone else's....
And the gfx card?
thats the problem. Most PC laptops don't come with such great gfx cards..

Personally, I've always been a Dell guy (other than my mac of course). But I've heard Toshiba makes good portables...
And what the hell happened to Acer? They used to be all the craze..

ive heard otherwise on asus, and i can almost definitely say no on compaq (and HP). Dell is the way to go (Y) (if you would rather get Sony, you can, but i think its a little more money for the same platform from dell). i think i read a recent article in PC magazine rating dell highest in servers, desktops, and laptops based on reader's opinions/experience.
Err I was actually thinking about going in for a Radeon 9000 Pro. As far as I know it's the best one available out there but I wanted to know what you guys think......

i think i heard toshiba makes really good portables too (i think i read it in that same PC Magazine article i was referring to)

it seems you expect too much from a laptop bhai..
general rule of thumb.. a laptop has half the power/features of a desktop of the same price.
DONT GET A TOSHIBA.
i bought a satellite 3005-s303, and its been nothing but a disaster after the first few months.
at first it was great, but then the modem died. i sent it in to get replaced by toshiba themselves, and they ended up having to replace the entire motherboard cuz they found other things wrong with the power supply, that if went unfixed would destry my computer. after i got my laptop back, the same problems returned.. my monitor has also gone out a few times, fortunately it has come back on after a few hours of being turned off.. my PCMCIA slots dont work. its noisy for a laptop.
here is my advice, never buy a toshiba laptop ever!!
I also checked the specs for the Dell Inspiron 8500....and it has the choice of a GeForce 4 4200 Go instead of a Radeon-M 9000 ...so now both are DX8 cards.....which do you think will have more performance?
For those who don't know a GeForce4 4200 Go is basically a downclocked GeForce 4 Ti 4200...
actually don't go for the 4200 Go. I've heard the Radeon 9000 is better.
Check out the vpr Matrix line - I know, the name sounds corny, plus it's a subsidiary of Best Buy, but they make some beautifully fast computers, both desktops and laptops, that sell at decent prices. My desktop computer is a Matrix, and I've had it for almost a year now...haven't ever owned a laptop, but they're definitely worth looking at.
you should get the biggest screen size you can, and the fastest processors you can afford, becfause that way the computer will last more. I have seen that laptops that are sold at stores (not online) have some good graphics card to be latptop most of what I 've seen are 32mb and some other have 64mb in video.
if you want the best deal for a laptop and but it online i extremely suggest for you to get a sager notebook. never heard of sager huh well go to www.pctorque.com and check around there they have good laptops deal the best graphic card they have now is the ati radeon 9000 professional with 128 mb but around the end of this month and starting the next month they are going to come up with new laptops that are going to incorporate the ATI Radeon 9600 professional (M-10p) with 7200 Rpm of hardrieves selectable until 80 gig and the largest display you can get will be 17 in in the model 4760. and you can choose ram until 1 gig and starting prices come like at 1,300 also if you know about alienware notebooks forget them they are based exactly on the sager they just have a diferent logo and a nice paint job and cost too much for their parts while their starting price is around 2,200 the 5670 sager will look exactly as the Area 51m made from alienware i hope this helps you out.

well, just a note on the screen and processor
realize the bigger screen will mean a bigger unit altogether, and will be heavier. i believe all laptops today will allow you to hook up an external monitor (like i might get a 17" LCD and use a KVM switch for my Dell and PowerBook). if youre not gonna carry your laptop around (trust me, being in college, i know you will want more portability then you think at first), then weight isnt too important.
and more processor speed means more heat, and my dell heats up enough to cook eggs (and the fan goes on every 3 minutes or so)
but it comes down to preferrence and type of use, i guess
