dreamz: First, how do you like your MAxtor drive? I've had mine 2 days, and its by far the quietest, fastest drive I've had in 10 years of PC use. Also, I'm fairly impressed with your Micron (excellent) DDR - thats good stuff, and costs a pretty penny.

And on a note of advice: DO NOT upgrade to an ATI 9000. My brother has one, and I was adequatly impressed with the performance/ cost ratio from watching his perform for 30min. Then I bought my first ATI card, a 9200 Ultra (Pro?) for my wife last week. I had nothing but driver issues, games crashing and when it did work the benchmarks were almost half of my old GeForce4 4200Ti. I ended up trading in her crappy ATI for the 5600FX Ultra I have, but if youre on a budget you can pick up GeForce4 Ti 4200s for very close to the same price as the 9000/ 9200 series. Alot of stores have them on clearance and a little bit of shopping will make it well worth your while.

Shes using my old Ti4200 now and her system screams. With a Radeon 9000 you'll see almost 2x the performance you have now. With a Ti4200 you'll see about 4x-5x the performance, for only a $15- $20 price difference. Long live nVidia.

Three Drives: Sounds like the perfect mobile Linux system.

Taha: I REALLY want to know. :woot:

Sone: How about editing several 50mb CAD files at once (making @$75 -$100 an hr.), playing UT2003 at its highest settings, designing company logos in PS7 and hosting a private FTP over broadband? Make money, have fun and give to others. Ican't think of anything better to do. Oh, wait...hang out at Aqua-Soft.

This system will probably be my lasy single x86 config. I figure since Apple has gone SMP in all of their high end desktop/ workstation solutions, it's time for me to do the same again: Be watching this thread for SMP Opterons on the nForce3 platofrm in September. Im going with the San Diego Opterons, and hopefully will be able to throw them into a watercooled system so I can OC the beejesus out of them. Hypertransport here I come!

Last gives me a unique claim to fame during 2001: SMP 633mhz Celeron system with 2gb pc66 ram. It was the fastest Celeron system privately owned in the world during 2000-2001. It sucked, but it was still the fastest. I mean seriously, you'd have to be crazy to spend the money to build an SMP system based on a 66mhz fsb...with CPUs that only had @64k L2. But it was fun (and a challange) to build, I actually got to talk to Intel Corp reps while I was building it. They promised a write up on it, but then they released the 800-900mhz series of P3's and I was forgotten about.

deadzombie: the maxtor is fine. i'm not sure of the model or anything because i pulled it from my old hp pavilion and i now use it as my secondary hdd. it's pretty quiet, but i feel like my wd hdd is faster, maybe because it's 7200 rpm and has an 8mb cache (not sure of the speed of the maxtor).

as for the micron, well, i'm pleased with it too! got it for $50 free shipping from some guy on ebay, brand new (so he says, and i think it is). it's been great!!

so the ati 9000 isn't good? i'm bidding on a 9000 pro, and i thought it'd be good, at least a good improvement from the pci card i have now. i've been looking at some of the ti4200s, but they're about twice the price of the 9000 pro i'm winning. but i thought i should try ati, as i've never before, but i'll keep an eye out for the ti4200. thanks for the advice!! i've been researching like crazy and never really found any personal experiences or useable advice.

52x cdrom (unplugged actually)

SB live! soundcard

like 13 USB ports (dont ask why)

4.1 speaker system

i love my system thats all i can say

#40629

dreamz: I had two Maxtor 6Gb Fireball drives that I pulled out of HP Pavillion systems back in 1998 - both drives still run perfect to this day. I almost purchased the exact WD drive you have - I found it online for a sale price of @$99, which was an amazing deal. I hesitated because I've owned no less than 10 WD drives over the past 5 years, and the last one just died (the reason I was looking for a new drive to begin with). My wife (who always looks out for me) knew I was looking, found the Maxtor at Office Depot for $149 with a $50 rebate, and surprised me with it. I'm going to write up a review at my new site comparing it with my Samsung & Seagate drives I have. (I've got 3 systems, so if I reference hardware not listed above its because its in another box).

Samsung has been the most reliable to date - slow as hell though. Very, very slow. I doubt the seek time is whats listed, and spin up time is more like 2,000 RPM than 7,200. However they last forever and take heat and abuse very well, so I use them mainly to insure my backup files are safe.

I din't know you were bidding online for your video card, or that you were stuck with PCI right now. Heck, an AGP GeForce is going to give you more performance than anything on PCI. Go AGP ASAP. You'll thank the hardware gods, wherever they may be.

bolero: Not a bad little box you've got there. I bet it's snappy as can be and sounds tight...Im a little jealous of your FSB...AMD needs to move hypertransport into the market full force, Im tired of you P4 guys kicking my FSB around.

>.<

#40630

yeah, maxtors are pretty reliable. ;)

i actually found the wd drive on ebay too. won it for $75 brand new, so it was a great deal, but yeah, i love my maxtor drive too.

oh yeah, i mean, i have a pci now, and of course i'll be upgrading to an agp. my old motherboard didn't have an agp slot, so i was stuck with getting this pci card, but now that i have this new motherboard, i'll go agp. i just can't decide between the 9000 pro for roughly $60 or a ti4200 for nearly $100.

but wow, people here have great setups. i'm just a poor college student. :D

#40633

#40634

Because this thread has me excited to no end, I'll post my servers specs. I just had this sent to me from my business partner...it was the workstation I was using last year, before we moved our offices to our houses. The system is slightly behind the times, although I haven't even begun to defile it yet!

Dell Inspiron Workstation

P4 1.6ghz*

*This is irritating me - the system props list the speed at 1666mhz...is this 1.6 or 1.7ghz? All I can see for certain is that its an early P4

200mhz FSB

Dell Mobo (???)

36GB 10,000 RPM Ultra 320 SCSI hard drive

512mb rdram (800mhz rated? this is my first rdram system...ack)

250mb internal zip

24x cd-rw

GeForce4 256mb Quadro

Black 19" Dell CRT thats been given to my wife, because I love her.

I like how this system is put together, although I don't like how WinXP is pretty much an OEM version, nor do I like how difficult it looks like its going to be to mod this. Cool latches allow easy access to everything, and Im defintely going to destroy that Quadro...but I dont think this system is going to be anything other than a server for my CAD/ design work...unless I can yank that P4 out and replace it.

albeik: I am humbled before the mighty Barton! All hail albeik's Barton!!!!

#40635

damn nice system albeik can i have it? lol

what do you use your server for DZ?

i have a file server on my network before.. but heh it was old.. and... i threw it off a bridge....

bolero: For my FTP I use my main workstation (the specs listed in the first post of this thread), called THORSHAMMER. Thats the system I spend 99.9% of my time on. For my CAD server I use the 1 year old Dell, which has just recently been christened ASGARD. My wifes system, originally JORMUNGAND, has just recently been renamed...Sunflower.

On the same note: the system in my closet, which needs a major, major overhaul (since it was piecemealed for my wifes system) was MIDGARD. This might end up getting set on fire, for a new section at TwistedCPU.com. (That's right, not only will we have OC/ hardware modding tutorials, icons, skins, and all that good stuff, we'll also have a section where people can post pics and avi's of computer parts they've blown up or set on fire.)

The SMP Opteron has system has already begun; a friend of mine is painting a tower Dragon case chroma color for me. This system will probably be called ODIN when finished. I have no idea why I use Norse mythos to name my systems...I've just done that for years.

I find really that a mac osx actally the best GUI has, but I heard from many people that OS X falls (crashed) just as often how Win XP. Can you people who have a mac, tell me is this true or not? Here in germany the new ibooks became much cheaper, maybe i think i buy one.
