Aqua-Soft ForumsHas anyone tried the Firefox 2.0 release yet, I was reading that there are already flaws found, but my concern is compatibility with skins and extensions. Sorry if this is in the wrong place.

Firefox 2.0 - Skin compatibility
Compatibility with 2.0 is the same as it is with 1.5: the extension/theme authors have to update their stuff. Themes in particular have to be modified in order to become 2.0 compatible: you can't just bypass the version check, because 2.0 has a bunch of UI changes.
As for the "flaws," there's only one, and the timing of its release is suspicious given how long 2.0 has been in alpha, beta, and RC.
Go to mozilla, Firefox 2 is now the default download. Based on all the extensions we use. I personnaly would like to know when the following extensions are updated for FF2
- stylish
- no script
- compact menu
- Fission
- Tab mix Plus
- Zoomy
- autoHideStatus Bar
- Stop-or-reload buttons
- Titlebar Tweaks
backup your profile, install firefox 2.0 in a different directory and run it. it will tell you what works and what doesnt'.
If you like it, you keep it. If you don't like it - uninstall and restore your profile 
is there an extension that will backup the bookmarks and skins? firefox updated last nite and it messed up my browser big time.
Now all my precious bookmarks are no more 
Your bookmarks should be fine. But if they have been destroyed, check your Application Data folder. There should be bookmark backups in the Firefox folders.
that's really strange. Check in your profile (Documents and SettingsApplication DataMozilla etc etc) and there should be at least backups in the bookmarkbackups directory.

I didn't install 2.0 in a new place, just install over old version. I had no real problems. A few extentiosn didn't work, and most of the themes I had failed too.
There's some ifox themes that have been converted, you can find them on DA
Themes and compactmenu don't work for me.
im going to wait until a few of the extensions become compatible....also until someone releases a theme so i can just change the toolbar buttons

Where can I find an older version of Firefox, 'cause FF2 succs without extensions and themes (I'm speaking for me) ??
I got compact menu working, by extracting the xpi file. Open the rdf file and then change the firefox version to 2.0.*
Zip up all the files again, change the extension back to xpi and then install it the normal way.
That's how I changed all the extensions which didn't convert over ok.
The only one I'm having real problems with Tab Mix Browser, it will install ok, but I get some real strange results, so I've taken it off just now.
It took me forever to get my firefox how I wanted it, so I'll wait till the clever chaps get there extensions inline before I upgrade I think.
A lot of extensions have already been updated to support 2.0. Extensions aren't the issue, it's the lack of upgraded themes.
Safire seems to be dead, so it looks like the best we'll get is the 2.0 update of Macfox, which clones Firefox's Mac appearance, rather than Safari. That is, the best we'll get until some enterprising Aqua-Soft themer gets to work.
anyone having problems with tabs?, mine won't work in ff2...they come up blank and i can't click them

the default 2.0 skin looks great with blitzr's leopard unified safari skin for the meantime, until macfox or other safari skins come out.
as far as tabs, google tabmixplus and download the beta, it's compatible with 2.0
(sorry about the extended image- i have media center running on the other screen and i'm too lazy at this hour to fix it =P)
Tip:
To make older themes/extensions work
1.Save the .Jar or .Xpi file ( the theme/extension file)
2.Open it with WinRAR
3. Look for the file Install.RDf
4. Extract install.rdf and edit with notepad
5. Look for line which has max version followed by some numbers
e.g 1.5.0.*
6. Change the number values to 2.0 and above , and save it
e.g 2.0.0.*
7. Update the xpi/jar file with the new install.rdf file(using winRAR)
8 Drag the file into the Firefox window
9. It will install and be compatible, however certain features may be buggy or nonfunctional
( v1.5 compatible themes and extensions shouldn't be giving problems i think, v1.07 addons may have problems)
themes from 1.5 and 2.0 are not compatible, even if you change that.. they look weird, tabs are screwed up, and the navigation bar/search bars get screwed up..
that tip is sometimes relevant to extensions, but NOT themes.

Please stop recommending this procedure. 2.0 has additional UI features over 1.5, and 1.5 themes do NOT support the new UI. Themes have to be manually updated by authors, not hacked into compatibility with 2.0.

i hacked SaFire skin to make it compatible with FF 2.0 in the RC version

why don't you try before saying it doesn't WORK ...
i supposed it depends on which theme you hack into compatibility
Some themes might work , others May not

edit: i tried some other hacked FF 1.5 themes, so far no problems..
the FF 2.0 UI does not have much difference from the FF1.5 UI

Try loading the Add-Ons window, searching for updates, then closing the drop-down notice.
There are lots of little UI additions that 1.5 themes simply do not make allowances for. I know this because I HAVE tried it. If you're happy with a hacked theme, that's fine--but don't try to claim that there's no difference between a 1.5 theme and a 2.0 theme.
