Here's my ride. 1997 Eclipse
Bought it brand new back in October 1996.
Selling it right now... family got bigger, so I had to buy this.
My daughter loves it.
Full leather interior, DVD entertainment system... the works.
This baby is loaded.
nice eclipse, a b**** to unlock in nfs carbon i'll tell you that.
haha Slewed! theres a side quest you can do to unlock it earlier!
psst if you want to do it regularly its not that hard. what system you got with it?
plus if you have a codebreaker then its a different story 
all these cars you ppl think that cant be seen in the states? your wrong. just buy one from Japan or wherever your baby is (buy it online for petes sakes) and get it delivered here. duh! oh and the greatest thing? its legal!

They have to meet US safety and emissions standards and not be on the banned import list.
Yes... there are vehicles that are not allowed to be imported into the US.
If it fails safety inspection, you can't title it.
If you can't title it, you can't register it... if you can't register it, you can't drive it.
The early Nissan Skyline GT's for example, are on the list of banned vehicles.
If you manage to get someone to load it on a boat for you and send it here, when it arrives, it will sit in the US Customs impound lot until YOU pay to have it sent back.
That being said, if you really want that special car, have it shipped over in pieces.
Engine and tranny must be shipped separately from the rest of the car.
It then becomes parts and not a car.
You still won't be able to title/register it, but you can run 'em on the track.

In the UK we have something called an MOT which is done every year which checks road worthy-ness of vehicle and emissions..

As for inspection, here where I live, you have to pass emissions tests every two years.
If you fail, they suspend your registration.

So in reality from what I read, its actually nothing to do with any features of the vehicle like emissions (majority of european emissions from new vehicles falls well within the tolerated US emissions) Speed abilities, driving orientation, size and weight of vehicle.
Its more to do with the protection of their own economy from what I can see? am I right?
Here every inch of the car has to fall within a certain 'road worthy' criteria every year if car is older than 3 years that is.
Everything from The obvious:
Emissions
Tyre Tread
Windscreen (No cracks etc)
all lights work.
No jagged rusty body work
No excessive Corrosion within a few inches of major body structure points
All seat belts free and working (no fray not even a whisper of thread poking out)
Window wipers working
the list goes on.....
and the worse thing, they charge you £40 ($80) for the priveledge, and without this yearly certificate you can't insure your vehicle or tax it (Tax also has to be purchased yearly and can range from approx £100 ($200) to £180 ($360) )
And then you have the fuel cost.... on average £0.90 a litre of Premium ($1.80)
So yeah I see a few guys here with the skylines but damn we pay for it :mad: hehe
No, you read it wrong... it has nothing to do with protecting the economy.
An imported car must meet EPA standards (US emissions) requirements and DOT (Department of Transportation) safety standards must also be met.
This means seat belts, airbags, bumpers, windshield, etc. must pass US safety standards. Similar to your road worthiness inspection, before they are allowed to be registered and driven in the US.
And not all cars from the EU meet all the standards... depends on the car.
The Ferrari F40 for example, failed to meet US safety standards. Sure it was fast, but it was a death trap.
Rich people brought them over, but they could only drive them on private race tracks... not public roads.
And in the state I live in, it cost me $550.00 US for me to register/drive my new car for 1 YEAR.
I have to pay this EVERY year. Granted, the price drops year after year as the cars value decreases, but my 5 year old car still cost me $150 for this years registration.
There are some states that charge less and some charge more.

They probably have close to 2000 miles on them now, (lecture seems to get further away every day) but they are still up and kickin'

Well i've driven that X5 (the one i posted a picture of in my last post) at 140 somewhere between Kiel and Hamburg, and i can tell you, while it feels stable purely because it weighs nearly two tonnes and the wheels are like barrels, i wouldn't want to push it too far.If you watch one of the recent Topgears, Clarkson also talks about a Brabus Mercedes, saying that they replace a lot of external parts because they are only designed to tolerate speeds up to 155mph. That way Mercedes doesn't need to pointlessly over-engineer parts, saving costs. So that if you're going 175 and the bumper flies off, they can tell you, there's a limiter on there for a reason. I'm sure there are plenty of cars capable of and safe over 155 with no problems, but it's more of a warranty issue.
The reason the big German manufacturers have the 155 limiter is not due to any of that. The real reason is that many years ago, the German government was thinking of imposing limits that would seriously restrict cars built there. in terms of emissions, top speed, and other factors. The German auto manufacturers got together and decided that they would instead place a blanket 155 MPH limiter on their cars, thereby making the government drop the proposed law. It's not a warranty issue, because other manufacturers don't impose such limiters.
I'm sure none of us ever get to go 155mph lol. It you're buying and car and go omg it only goes 130mph! you wont ever get to go any higher than 110 (lol) on the freeway if ur a super speeder
