Ubuntu Linux

Ubuntu (Dapper Drake) doesn't seem to install on my Dell D600 Latitude laptop. Downloaded the Desktop .iso, burned it to the CD, and there's a boot (I/O) problem with the CD. That's when I try booting it as a Live CD. When I stick it in the CD drive in Windows, a splash screen pops up but then nothing else. Exploring the CD and playing around with the autostart options does nothing.

I tried burning two different CDs, one using Windows, and one using DeepBurner. Both produce the same problem. I'm not sure what's the issue...I might try burning the same ISO with a different CD drive (i.e on a different computer).

Check the MD5 sum of the iso maybe it's corrupted, I tried the Live CD on my sister D600 and it boots fine.

Right, I was going to check the MD5 sum one of these days (thanks, karma.police!), and it turns out that the one I had was in fact corrupted. I downloaded and burned another one that ran correctly...now, to the install-cave Batman!

You didn't mention this, perhaps you didn't try it? With the pygtk bindings and all available plugins it delivers more than iTunes...

And why wait for a SpotLight clone on windoze? beagle is already there.

For an itunes replacement, there's xmms2.

You just have to look at their list of clients for something that suits you.

Or use commandline, like I'm doing until I figure out whats wrong with python.

Use gimp but install photo gimp, a gui front end to gimp that will make gimp look and behave like photo shop.

I'm totally astonished by Ubuntu's behaviour...My Windows kept giving me problems...So i decided to try ubuntu...I boot the LiveCD, and installed it from there...That was over 20 minutes ago, all i need was one reboot in the end, and i'm here, ubuntu automatically recognized my wireless connection, the laptop battery and "Fn" keys for volume,so i'm already online with Firefox,writing this, and chating in Gaim...Now i'll take time to install whatever i also want and personalize the desktop...

EDIT: Now i installed EasyUbuntu...so i can play almost every media file, including mp3 and divX and open flash and shockwave,and videos embedded in webpages.

I recommend everybody to give it a try...=)

I cant run my W-LAN Network because my network adapter doesnt run correctly, its the Linksys WUSB 11.

I will try Ubuntu again when I buy a new network adapter.

I agree. I am sure there is someone else there who has close to the same issue. You will probably have to use NDISwrapper to compile a driver.
