Ubuntu Linux

This morning i was only using Windows XP.

Then i discovered an OS thread on another forum and thought i would give Linux ago.

I downloaded and creaded a "Live CD" of Ubuntu Linux, http://www.ubuntu.com/

I have to say i am very impressed.

I haven't even installed Ubuntu on my PC yet i am just running it off a CD-ROM, yet i am connected to the internet and writing this message.

Have any other AquaSoft members been running Ubuntu?

I was wondering how the live CD works, i am connected to the internet, running off a CD-Rom how does that work??

Plus i have saved files on my Ubuntu desktop, does that get saved on my C: Hard Drive??

Yeah Ubuntu is a good distro. And with Dapper (will be released on 1st June,06 ) it will get a LOT better. I have been using Ubuntu for a while, breezy and Now Dapper Beta releases

It creats a RAM drive and load the kernel from there, all the hardware drivers are built in the kernel, It detects and loads all the hardwares and there drivers. Everything else also work from the memory. So when you shut down or reboot, everything that is in RAM drive will be gone. Dapper Live CD lets you save the session in a USB drive.

I've run Ubuntu and it is my favourite Linux distribution to date. They've really made many improvements from each release and it's very easy to use, not to mention their forum has a wealth of information and is generally ****ie-friendly.

Regarding the Photoshop issue, I know CrossOver Office (a version of WINE) is said to run Photoshop 7 very well. You can always fork out some cash for VMWare though, which solves all compatability issues, but requires you to install a copy of Windows in a virtual hard drive.

To be honest, I've been thinking about trying ubuntu for some time.

But I'm still not too sure. (kind of scared off by the whole root is disabled thing)

Basically, I'm just looking for a reason to try it out.

Is there anything noteworthy, that makes it different from other linux distros, that might convince me?

One of its major advantages is that there is a team behind it that validates it on a lot of laptops.

If you are looking for a distribution that is laptop ready out of the box, ubuntu is your best choice today.

On my laptop, WLAN was working right after install, even the Fn+Volume keys were nicely integrated.

Another one is the tight integration of gnome - although ubuntu is based on debian, the desktop integration with gnome is way better than in debian or any other distribution that I have seen - e.g. insert a CD/DVD and its icon appears on the desktop, already mounted and ready for browsing. That simply doesn't happen with debian.

Finally, the debian packaging system is superior to RPM (Red Hat, Suse) - upgrading from one release to another is a painless experience. Especially Suse made me reinstall each time to fix a broken upgrade. Ubuntu has an additional wrapper around the synaptic package manager that simplifies software installation even further. Editing your /etc/apt/sources.list with is no longer necessary. It also monitors for updates and security fixes in the background in a fashion that is similar to windows update with an inobtrusive tray icon.

The root disabled thing is not that bad after all. If you don't trust it, you can still do:

sudo su -

passwd

(Once you have given root a password, you can log in as root)

After a while, I got so used to it that I made my debian install behave the same way.

I do a lot of:

sudo -v

./configure && make && sudo make install

Hence i can compile and install in the background without exposing meself too much and without ending with some root owned files in my Projects directory.

If your system specs are low, I'd recommend using XFCE4 instead of gnome. The upcoming release of xubuntu might be worth considering - still turning ubuntu into xubuntu is a matter of installing a few packages.

I think I'll try it out, at the very least to try out a newer release of gnome. (I will not install gnome or kde on my slackware install, I prefer enlightenment's cvs..)

The reason I was worried about root disabled, is just that I prefer to only use the root account.

Just a note to promote one of my favorite programs:

checkinstall basically creates a package (slack, rpm, or debian), and installs it. The advantage of course, is mainly whatever you compiled is lot easier to uninstall.

With Ubuntu 6.0.6 officially released today I have to say I'm getting more and more tempted to try it out. It like the way 'Dapper Drake' looks, yet it still looks clean as well.

Ubuntu really is the shiz! I've been running it for about a two years now, following the release cycle from Hoary through to Dapper. I only tried Ubuntu out as I was trying to find a decent GNU/Linux distro to replace Windows on my PC, and after messing around with Mandrake and SuSe for a while i just couldn't handle it, but Ubuntu was so unbelievably easy to use, it just blew me away! Even my 50 year old mum can work it without having to ask me a single question about how (as she used to frequently with Windows).

Everyone must show some Dapper love!

Ubuntu's really a great distro and they develop it quite fast. The only major thing that stops me from switching is heavy dependence on internet connection... because when you need some new software, you have to apt-get install it, and it is too heavy on bandwidth while downloading all the dependancies. (it is common for all binary-packaged Linux distros)

I've been using Ubuntu for about 10 days now, and i really like it.

I had some trouble getting my Radeon 9000pro to show 1360x768 on my 32" samsung LCD tv, but i managed do get it done. Right now I'm struggling to get my wireless connection stabile.

I have a Asus Wl-167g usb adaptor, and i can't get it to keep the connection to my AP.

I have narrowed it down to be a problem with the rt2x00 driver and wpapsk encryption.

A lot of people are having these kind of problems.. i hope they'll fix it soon.

Other than that, i'm really liking Ubuntu.. It is my first distro, and i think i'll stick with it.

I downloaded Ubuntu 6.06, installed into my HD and installed NVIDA Drivers and XGL/Compiz, i was amazed i couldnt belive how i have not installed it before but then, i was unable to find a good iTunes replacement, tried everything banshee, amarok, Rhymtbox, XMMS, but none compares to iTunes or WMP10, aside from that tought i really liked it, but now im back to my old Winnie waiting for Vista..

Overall is a very nice OS but with very limited good apps (due to the reduced number of users and the open source status), tought i really liked it, Windows still delivers the best experience for me.

@Photo678: you can run PS 7.0 trough Wine or Crossover Office, but no CS2

That's because there isn't a good itunes replacement. Apple should just be kind and port it. <-- Joke, won't happen. Amarok is probably the best of your list but it's ipod support sucks ass. If amarok used gtkpod for ipod support, it would be just as good as itunes. well, close.

there was a rumor in febuary 2005 that they would port itunes via java- since they were "porting" it to motorola phones.. another good reason behind it is because you can't view quicktime files through linux, so with quicktime most likely comes itunes..

but i guess we'll have to see.
