A few new programs from Four13 Designs

I've been busy working on a couple simple, fun and easy to use applications over the past week. Now that they are just about done (still need to make sure they are 100%) I thought I would post a preview to see whether to release them or not.

First is VideoShelf. A few of you might have noticed it in a couple of my desktop screenshots. It's basically a DVD cataloger in the same vein as Delicious Library. Add in your DVD information, download a cover and voila browse your collection without having to touch your DVD case.

Second is RadioFree. Enjoy listening to the radio over the net? Want a simple way to listen to them but no have to bother opening Windows Media Player? RadioFree is for you. It simply sits in the system tray and waits until you choose to listen. Adding stations is as easy as a copy and paste.

Last for now is NetGazette. This is a simple RSS Feed reader that resides in the system tray. When you want to read the latest news, click the tray icon and you'll get the last 12 headlines for each feed in its own submenu. See a headline that sparks some further investigation? Just click on the headline and it'll automatically start up your web browser at the desired page.

There are a few more I'm working on but these are the ones that are closest to completion. Each one has a small memory footprint so you should hardly even notice it's running until you need it.

Let me know your thoughts and whether or not there is any interest for something like this. (I'll be uploading some screenshots later on - it's pretty late here as it is) so you'll be able to see them all in action.

Hi Sranshaft, this may be too early on to wonder about but could your videoshelf application also manage one's local movie library as well? For instance, if my dvd's are backed up to divx/xvid on my harddrive, could your app read in a folder/subfolders and allow you to assign images to the dvd cases that way? So that by clicking on the dvd case, one could launch the movie directly?

@Firecracker: Rest assure that that feature will definitely be included. While it won't read the folder, you can add the file to the collection as a hard-drive movie which will then allow you to auto-start the movie by cdouble-clicking the case.

@Paralex: Great you see you enjoying NetGazette. Also, glad to you see you haven't broken it yet!

@CerealMouse: VideoShelf will probably be the last of the three to be released as I'm still deciding on certain aspects of the program. It's 89% complete though so it won't be more than a week or two for a pre-release release.

Many thanks to everyone that has commented! Good news to those who have been wanting RadioFree -- I'll be releasing it tomorrow! It now supports RealMedia and Windows Media Player. You'll find the majority of the net radio feeds fall into these two formats so it should fit most people's needs. I need a couple people to test the RM support so leave a message if you'd like to help.

I'm still looking on adding Shoutcast (aka Winamp) support and support for iTunes radio streams (for compatiblity with Live365.com feeds).

NetGazette will be released just after RadioFree and VideoShelf within the next week or so. Also, to update the list of things to come, I will be including a new application, OpenSesame. It's your basic application launcher that resides in the tray with the ability to seperate your applications into groups.

If you're like me with a lot of programs installed, it'll save a lot of time searching through a cluttered Start menu or a dock with either too many icons spilling off screen or super-tiny to fit them all on. Free up that precious space for your most used applications and throw the rest into this and say, 'OpenSesame'.

maybe i'm wrong, but "radiofree" isn't working. i installed it, it appears in the systray, but nothing happend. and you can't select the "select a station...". i mean it's there,but not clickable!
