See if it's not just one song. You may have already tried it, but sometimes a song just won't have sound. It has happened to me once.
If all of these options are exhausted (blaze, muscie already said the iPod was playing the music), it could very well be that sound jack has gone out. Take it to an Apple store to let them take a look at it. If it is still under warrantee (all iPods come with a 1 year warrantee), they will give you a new one
Try "restarting" the iPod by holding the Menu and Play buttons down together for about five seconds.

What gen. iPod do you have? Maybe there's a firware update.
if it can do everything else it doesnt need to be reset
did you spill coke on it like i did? it still worked then...for a month
i think that ipod can be considered with itunes coz most of the settings are copied, could be an itunes related prob too.
there is still no sound i baought new headphones and it did not help me. they broke and i cannot hear ipor. and no i did not spill nothing on them.i put them on table.
what gen ipod, and did you try the original headphones on something else [eg ur tv]
also, does taking the headphones out make the music stop playing?

Have you tried wiggling the headphone plug around? Not out just around a bit.
If you don't even hear a little ruffle or sound normally associated with playing with it, either
a. the sound's muted
or
b. that sucker's gone OUTTTTT.
I don't personally have an iPod but I do have an mp3 player that does strange things like that and an old boombox with a weak jack. If wiggling the plug does make some noise but doesn't restore your music, your jack isn't quite entirely gone. It just means it's getting power but for some odd reason, it's not getting the sound input itself.
If wiggling it restores your music, then it's fixed but you'd better take it in anyway because you never know when you can knock it a little off and lose the sound again.

the pod has become people's life line. its a way of saying who you are and what you listen to. believe it or not, the freezer trick WORKS!!! i have a 5th gen video ipod that quit playing sound one day. it showed it was playing but i heard no sound. i read tons of threads and feeds with much concern. just when i was gonna give up, i said what the "h" and tried it with a slight variation. instead of putting it the freezer with the possiblity of forgeting it, i use a flexible gel ice pack and wrapped the ipod in it for about 5 minutes. to my suprise, the ipod PLAYS WITH SOUND again!!! if you've lost hope and all else has failed, give this method a try. what do you have to lose other than your temper. try it, it saved me money and heartache!
the principle behind this is expansion and contraction of the metal surfaces in the bearings of the ipods hdd, if the bearings have seized up freezing could help free up the bearings and let the hdd platters spin again, plus this is only a temporary fix or so i've been told.

I wouldn't do that unless your iPod is out of warranty.
If your iPod is a click wheel model, try pressing and holding Menu and the centre (select) button for about 5 seconds, and it'll reboot.
Try different headphones, wiggling the headphone jack, and transferring the songs again.
If all that doesn't work, restore your iPod (you'll lose all data on it, so back up anything important), then put your music back on.
If that still doesn't work, I'll bet it's a hardware problem, and you'll need to send it to Apple.
I had the same problem - ipod works in every respect but plays no sound through bottom hookup or earphone jack. Does play via usb to pc though.
It's the logic board - whatever the *bleep* that is!

Put your headphones on and play a song. While the song is playing, press really hard with your thumb at the bottom of the ipod just to the right of the play/pause part of the click wheel. Don't press on the click wheel, just outside of it. If you can manage to squeeze some sound out of it by doing this, it usually is an indication of a problem with the logic board; thus needing replacement.
Well, after a few phone calls and a climb up Apple's corporate ladder, Apple came through. They are allowing me to swap the old ipod for a new one for a small fee (~35 dollars). Be polite, describe the problem (manufacturer defect) and your disappointment and stress things like customer loyalty and they may treat you with the same love.
Call 1-800-275-2273, hang on past the first set of tree choices, and when asked if you need technical support say no. Then keep on going down the rabbit hole.
I also had the same problem... and it was the logid board. I tested the iPod by pressing firmly at the bottom right of the click wheel... when doing so, i heard my music!
I tried the freezing the device... and it does not work. I restarted it and restored it and it didn't do anything.
I called Apple and did what "mlkjug" stated by being respectful and nice but firmly advising them that since i'm way out of the warranty period, i have been a loyal customer to Apple being that this was my 5th iPod I purchased from them and that this is a manufacturer defect. They transferred me to another department and they basically stated they will replace my iPod for free. I should be getting my NEW replacement on Monday.

I have the same issue with no sound on my 5th generation 30g ipod. I am going to try also calling the 1 (800) and see what they tell me. I will update when I get some kind of result.
There's actually an actual phone number for iPod support by Best Buy free of charge.
Call 1 (800) BEST BUY and ask for ipod or mp3 player support.

I told them that a lot of my friends bought other mp3 players but I bought the ipod because I knew it was a good product, but now I'm pretty dissapointed. After going through 2 or 3 customer service levels, they got me to someone who could take care of it. Good luck with getting yours taken care of. Thanks milkjug.

I remember when i got in a fight, and i had my iPod in my pocket, and i took a punch to it, it ****ed it up real good. It froze, and when I tried restarting it, I heard the HD rocking, like it was knocked off the reading needle or something. It took like 3 and a half months to get my iPod.
Plain and simple, it's broke. Bring it to the Apple store and have it repaired.

after few TIMES of calling, i got to a guy that could transfer me to their supervisor and go through all the process and the result is................ since my 5th generation doesn't come out anymore, i can choose any ipod i want for FREE. i picked the new ipod nano 4th generation, i could of choose the ipod classic 120gb, but i choose the nano. You have to be patient at this, the first guy i got is like he just old me to pay $130 dollars to get it repair, you have to KEEP trying until you explain fully about what your problem is.
