Microsoft Further Delays Vista

I'm freakin' surprised !!!! DOH !!

A huge disappointment lies in store for those awaiting Microsoft's new operating system, Windows Vista...

In an announcement, the company has pushed-back the launch of its already delayed Vista to consumers - from late 2006 to early 2007, quoting the reason that PC manufacturers need sufficient time to test the running of this platform on their systems. But yes - the business version will arrive till November 2006, though home users will have to wait until Jan 2007.

Jim Allchin, co-president, Microsoft Corp, said that the industry requires greater lead time to deliver Windows Vista on new PCs during the holiday season, and that hence the company has decided to separate business from consumer availability.

Windows Vista is being awaited with baited breath - especially since it is Microsoft's first major update to its operating system - since the launch of Windows XP in late 2001.

Currently available in limited beta version, Microsoft plans to make available six versions of Windows Vista. Vista promises to be an improvement over Windows XP in terms of security functions and a quicker start-up. Yet it is believed that when Vista releases, some of the key features that were originally intended - will be conspicuously absent.

Although disappointment hangs in the air post Microsoft's announcement, most users are in agreement over the premise that it is better for Microsoft to ship a completed product rather than one like the much criticized Windows XP.

And after 6 years, it better be spotless since there is NO excuse for a company the size of MS to spend this much on an OS and have less than stellar product. Especially after they ditched so many things and didn't start from scratch, as they promised they would.

Most vendors will probably offer a free upgrade to Vista as a marketing tool to sell more PC's over the holidays.

It's marketing 101.

But I seriously doubt the delay will have any real effect on PC sales.

God! Who the hell cares about Mac, the only reason PC users even skin their PC's to resemble Mac is cause, well let's face it, Macs are visually stunning.

If everybody wanted a Mac, as you so-called Mac Fanboys would like to think, sites like this wouldn't exist, as there would be no need to customize anymore....now that everyone has an authentic MAC

I can't wait for Vista, Visually a Top of the notch overall look and quality UI, with better security and features

Nah... not quite... Mas are mostly image/status toys - not general computers . Say most men like good suites, but very little can offer a Valentino or something like that - not because they're bad - but because they're not practical for everyday and because they're simply too expensive for everyone. Apple makes mainstream business with ipods - they're cheap. But Macs are for status and for that alone.

I would definitely beg to differ with you on this one....

It has nothing to do with "status" and everything to do with usability... there is no comparison between what I can do on my mac and what I could do on windows. This is coming from someone who used windows for more than ten years and never thought I would own or even want a mac. I used to think that macs where.. well dumb. I made the switch last year and will not be going back. Everything got simpler. I really grew as a designer after I got my mac and certainlyl improved my skill set. No, my mac didnt make me a great designer but it certainly helped. I look at it like this... consider a a really great golfer with bad clubs. He is still a great golfer and makes great shots... but when you give him the right equipment he becomes amazing. Macs are only slighlty more expensive then their windows counterparts.. a 20 inch imac core duo with built in isight can be had for 1499 from the apple refurbished store today... can you unpack your windows computer plug it in and video chat with a family member within 10 minutes? I think not...

I have had my mac mini for over a year and it has not crashed ONE time... I have probably restarted it less times than your windows computers crash. Like I said... I am far from the typical apple "fanboy" as you so ardently refer to them, I just know a good product when I see one. While windows XP is a fairly stable operating system when treated properly and with the proper virus protection... it pales in comparison to any version of Mac OS X. Expose, built in dictionary, spotlight, dashboard, quicksilver, mail.. all these things are available to you that work way better than anything on windows. Trust me... I have used both and feel crippled when I go back to my winnie computer.

In short.. I know that this might turn into a debate but you simply cant make the comparision until you have used both and been able to see the difference for yourself.

I have... I will try vista im sure.. but I am not expecting to be surprised by it.

I would agree with bz (again)... _cell... I think you are a little off base with your remark that Macs are for status and for that alone. I too switched to a Mac after 15 years on a Windows PC. That said, I use a PC every day (via Remote Desktop Connection) because I am a software engineer and do all of my programming in the Windows environment. I think I have a very objective viewpoint. Problem is, I'm not very good at verbalizing it. LOL. To put it one way, the Mac feels like my favorite pair of blue jeans. The fit is perfect and feels oh so right. The PC is like that pair of hand-me-down polyester dress slacks my mother made me wear when I was 12 that were too loose in the waist and too short in the leg. Something just doesn't feel right. The integration between the apps on the Mac is awesome. I find myself much more productive on the Mac than the PC. With iWeb, I put up an awesome looking site in a matter of hours... I keep a daily blog and do my own podcasts now. All with just a few clicks of the mouse. One thing I do miss is all of the customizing... which is why I still keep a PC around to play with.

Looks like we have a Mac vs PC free-for-all on our hands...

What's funny is that there must be people who feel the opposite. They used to be Mac users but switched to Windows and ended up being more productive. Though I've yet to meet any, simple probability guarantees it to be so. I wonder what their stories are .

Bz just spoke for us, who generally people like to call Apple Fanboy / Zealot... where the fact is we were too Windows Users once who got pissed with breakdowns of system and got better one.

I use both Windows and Mac due to my work requirement, Personally I own a mac which I use for all my persoanl stuff.... and I find that I keep looking for excuse (even at office) to get on my iBook. The reason is clear, it's the simplicity.

Alot of the feedback I've read acorss other websites expressed distress at having to wait longer. I can't imagine what the big hurry is. It's not like XP SP2 is so bad. They can take as long as they like, whatever it takes so it doesn't suck.

4 years, xp was released in 2002.

the drivers alone in xp mount up to around 600mb total, man.. its probably not compatible with anything!

ill pick up the business ver. from my dads work (big tech company), so ill have it in nov.

i dont see what breakdowns their are in XP, perhaps you should have a more up to date pc before you judge it? My pc specs are in my sig, i never had a crash that wasnt intentional. Its not the best OS, but it isnt the worst. Mac has some flaws of its own... *cough* what anti virus software *cough*
