No more osx?!?

I was just over at my brothers, playing with his new imac. and he told me he herd this horrible rumor that apple was going to stop using osx on its comptuers. instead it would be running vista! this was some what based on the new intell chips being able to run vista.

just so u know my brother dosn't work at apple. so all of this would be just a rumor. a really, really , really , REALLY bad rumor. and i seriously doubt apple would do this cuase there os is what makes them stand out from all the other computer companies. i doubt they want to be just a nother dell or hp.

has anyone else herd this. or was my older bro talking out of his bum.

#362718

no that wont happen if anything m$ will drop windoze.

#362719

you have got to be kidding me.

hopefully you didnt believe this AT ALL because apple prizes its OS just as much (maybe more) than its hardware.

nuh uh. not happenning

I guess the rumors come from an articles by John C. Dvorak on PC Magazine. I'd read the articles, on page 91 March 7 2006 edition

The idea that Apple would ditch its own OS for Microsoft Windows came to me from Yakov Epstein, a professor of psychology at Rutgers University, who wrote to me convinced that the process had already begun. I was amused, but after mulling over various coincidences, I’m convinced he may be right. This would be the most phenomenal turnabout in the history of desktop computing.

Epstein made four observations. The first was that the Apple Switch ad campaign was over, and nobody switched. The second was that the iPod lost its FireWire connector because the PC world was the new target audience. Also, although the iPod was designed to get people to move to the Mac, this didn’t happen. And, of course, that Apple had switched to the Intel microprocessor.

Though these points aren’t a slam-dunk for Epstein’s thesis, other observations support it. The theory explains several odd occurrences, including Apple’s freak-out and lawsuits over Macintosh gossip sites that ran stories about a musicians’ breakout

box that has yet to be shipped. Like, who cares? But if Apple’s saber-rattling was done to scare the community into backing off so it wouldn’t discover the Windows stratagem, then the incident makes more sense. As does Bill Gates’s onscreen appearance

during Apple’s turnaround when Jobs was taking a pot of money from Microsoft. The Windows stratagem may have been a done deal by then. This may also explain the odd comment at the Macworld Expo by a Microsoft spokesperson that Microsoft Office will continue to be developed for the Mac for “fi ve years.” What happens after that? This switch to Windows may have originally

been planned for this year and may partly explain why Adobe and other high-end apps were not ported to the Apple x86 platform when it was announced in January. At Macworld, most observers said that these new Macs could indeed run Windows now.

Bigger companies than Apple have dropped their proprietary OSs in favor of Windows—think IBM and OS/2. IBM also jumped on the Linux bandwagon over its own AIX version of Unix. Business eventually trumps sentimentality in any large company. Another issue for Apple is that the Intel platform is wide open, unlike the closed proprietary system Apple once had full control over. With a proprietary architecture, Apple could tweak the OS for a controlled environment without worrying about the demands of a multitude of hardware add-ons and software subsystems. Windows, as crappy as many believe it to be, actually thrives in this mishmash architecture. Products, old and new, have drivers for Windows above all else. By maintaining its own OS, Apple would have to suffer endless complaints about peripherals that don’t work. As someone who believed that the Apple OS x86 could gravitate toward the PC rather than Windows toward the Mac, I have to be realistic. It boils down to the add-ons. Linux on the desktop never caught on because too many devices don’t run on that OS. It takes only one favorite gizmo or program to stop

a user from changing. Chat rooms are filled with the likes of “How do I get my DVD burner to run on Linux?” This would get old fast at Apple.

Apple has always said it was a hardware company, not a software company. Now with the cash cow iPod line, it can afford to drop expensive OS development and just make jazzy, high-margin Windows computers to finally get beyond that five-percent market share and compete directly with Dell, HP, and the stodgy Chinese makers. To preserve the Mac’s slick cachet, there is no reason an executive software layer couldn’t be fitted onto Windows to keep the Mac look and feel. Various tweaks could even improve the OS itself. From the Mac to the iPod, it’s the GUI that makes Apple software distinctive. Apple popularized the modern GUI. Why not specialize in it and leave the grunt work to Microsoft? It would help the bottom line and put Apple on the fast track to real growth.

The only fly in the ointment will be the strategic difficulty of breaking the news to the fanatical users. Most were not initially pleased by the switch to Intel’s architecture, and this will make them crazy.

Luckily, Apple has a master showman, Steve Jobs. He’ll announce that now everything can run on a Mac. He’ll say that the switch to Windows gives Apple the best of both worlds. He’ll say this is not your daddy’s Windows. He’ll cajole and cajole, and still hear a few boos. But those will be the last boos he’ll hear, for then the Mac will be mainstream. We will

welcome the once-isolated Apple mavens, fi nally.

if they drop the os open source community will continue it hopefully.

but this will not happen is like saying microsoft will ditch windows for linux?????

rule of thumb in bussiness there have to be 3 diffrent companys appealing to 3 diffrent markets.

(example-best-buy,circuit city,compusa-wal-mart,kmart,target)

3 companys many diffrent sub-divions.

THIS WILL NOT HAPPEN ask any bussiness person about this.

yeah, i read that dvorak thing. it's speculation built on a rumor that some guy overheard his brother say he heard from his barber's nephew....

it's bs. top to bottom and side to side.

Dvorak is such a hack- I don't see Apple making yet another major change to OS/Architecture in such a small periods of time.

Jobs would sooner have a heart attack.

#362730

LOL, that's ridiculous. Why would they ruin the tradition of their OS series? Plus, with Leopard hitting stores this fall, there's no way Apple will drop their OS.

#362734

Why would someone say that?

That's possibly the dumbest thing I've EVER heard.

two of the reasons keeping up this rumor are based on the iPod. That's not so much having to do with the OS.

#362745

Exactly my thought...

Dvorak has become a really good crack and meth customer lately :P

Guess that's where his inspiration comes from ;)

You selling him any? :P

#362775

How else would i be getting any money for a Mac? ;)

But he still isn't buying enough so i could get me a WoW account :(

Oh no! This really might happen, the arguments in article quoted by alang seem to be very rational. And this was predicted by "Pirates of Silicon Valley". :(

But I'm sure, if it happens, it is not so bad:

1st, Apple could give away their software products, so we could have it under Windows (imagine iPhoto, Aperture, XCode or Garage Band ported to new Apple's platform OS - or could they just cease it all?)

2nd, there will be no more 'cease and desist' letters to Aqua emulation enthusiasts, because their products will not compete with Apple products. In other words, all our skinning and porting activity will be legal (and might be even supported by Apple)

And finally (and concluding from theprevious statement), there's a strong possibility of establishing a new powerful opensource OS developing community for creating linux-like OS on the ruins of MacOS - because it was partially based on UNIX and NextStep (most GUI innovations in MacOS X DP* releases reminded me of *nix GUIs, especially Rhapsody - only for final commercial releases Apple programmers and designers managed themselves to make a few steps forward; see http://www.guidebookgallery.com).

And the Microsoft is just a crowd of idea thiefs: I've just got an MSN letter titled: "Sealed with a KISS: Keeping It Smart and Simple with MSN". There are at least 2 images which violate the laws on some other companies' branding (one icon is mimic to Ubuntu Linux, and another one is some mimic to Apple's Mac OS X web page old style icons, seen in some 2000 or near that). Hate them!!!!!

First off, Apple would not switch to Microsoft. They make plenty of money. They aren't stupid. More and more people are switching than ever before because they are fed up with MS. Just because some guy at a magazine writes something means nothing. He doesn't work for Apple. He's some guy. Some guy who works at a magazine. Some guy in a world full of 6 billion people. Woo.

Second, everyone copies everything. I was told FrontRow is copied from an app made by Elgato Systems. Apple didn't invent desktop search. They didn't invent widgets. They didn't invent the GUI. What they do is take a good idea and make it great, but, it's still copying. But everyone does it. No one looks at the automakers and says "hey they're copying *insert name of first autocompany here*". No, taking an idea from someone else and making it your own just offers more options. Look at video games. Look at the unbelievable amount of WW2 based games now. I have yet to see an article where people ***** about that game designer copying the idea from some other game designer. It just happens. Everyone wants in on the hot thing. If Microsoft didn't do it, people would complain, and when they do do it, people complain. When was the last time someone said WindowBlinds is copying Apple, because it has the ability to do left handed min/max/close, and all that? No, no one ever does. Instead they all just want to ***** about Microsoft.

There are a million MP3 players on the market now. There are tons of online music stores. This is the way the world works.

As for your points, aqua emulation does not compete with Apple. No one simply uses aqua emulation instead of spending $2000 on a Mac. They do it because they can't afford the Mac, or are stuck with a Windows machine. If they were simply given a Mac, those people would more than likely switch. Apple isn't concerned about competition from the scene, they are concerned with intellectual copyright. It is their property. They know they aren't losing money. Our niche is very small. They care that someone is taking their copyrighted work and using it as they see fit.

#363642

I knew this thread would start a flame war.

I'm not saying Apple invented everything (as you might notice, I'm saying that OSX is based on something; and I treat that normal in my post). I'm not saying that emulation is illegal. I'm saying if Apple abadons their OS, we might take it. If Apple swithes to Windows, then we might have MacOS apps under Windows. There's nothing bad in any turn of this situation! There's no point to be afraid of this and say no no no and cry. Things just happen. Big guys and good old friends just manipulate tons of little green papers, who cares? It is Apple, you know, it could make Intel work faster than PowerPC. In any way, they'll make best solution!

And my tirade about Microsoft is caused by a really Ubuntu-like icon in MSN letter (see attachment). Just that. Kinda offtopic :) Calm down, please, I'm always afraid to see our members raging so high.

Word to Word agreeing with Flyakite !!!

As far Dvorak... I'm really begining to believe Unbe, that he's buying meth from Unbe !!

#363656

What a hell... I doubt Apple abound OSX. Why??

And why all the Comunity try to emulate whole OSX on PCs?? Because OSX is absolutely gorgeous and no other operating system can be even compared to OSX. When I saw Tiger in action I wanted to have a mac! U get free of virus envirnomental with many feautures that windows users like me ( and bunch of aquasoftians) are dreaming for! The true is that we loves macs (at least I do) for its software! So why Apple would kill Project that is the main reason why we switch from pc to a Mac!?

I know, and the Ubuntu like icon has been discussed before across various forums. If Apple switches to Windows, whose to say we would have Mac OS apps? If Apple believes their apps are good, why wouldn't they think their OS is good? We already have iTunes and QuickTime. Apple brings apps to the MS platform that will make them money. And yes, there is plenty of bad from this situation! MS would dominate the OS market even more than they do now. Windows would be the only OS for Apple. Do you not see the problem here? It's Windows. No OS X. None. There would be nothing to emulate anyway, because OS X would no longer be alive.

And I for one, do not want to see more Apple apps on Windows. Apple does great stuff on their OS, but they code horrible PC versions. They are memory hogs and often don't perform nearly as well as their native counterparts.

Generally you buy an Apple for the OS, not the pretty hardware. With the custom pc market these days, you can get any pc case your heart desires. Check out the TJ07 case from Silverstone. It's similar to a G5 case, but black, and pure awesomeness.

I'm not trying to start a flame war, but geeze, think about what would happen if Apple switched to Microsoft? I'd be more than willing someone would shoot Steve Jobs, and I'm serious. There are many, many devout, crazed mac users out there. I could easily see someone/some group planning an attack on Apple or Steve Jobs. Mac users are nuts. Why would any sane person want Apple to switch to Windows? Apple allowing users to install Windows on Apple hardware would be great. Apple ditching their OS for Vista? No thank you. OS 9 to OS X was a serious OS jump. Apple put the work into it. XP to Vista is like XP Rehashed. There is definitely not a good, solid 4/5 years of OS development going on there. And especially considering half the stuff in Vista has been pulled/delayed or will also be available on XP, or has been ported to work on XP (Rafael Rivera), I don't really see what's so great about Vista. Sure it will be better, but I want a good, 4 years of OS work. I want a new OS, not an old OS with a face lift and extra features.

I would much rather have to pay $1500 to get a Mac to be able to use Mac programs, than have Apple ditch their flagship operating system, and switch to Windows in hopes that maybe they'll recode all their apps to work on Windows, just so the next day I can also probably get some virus that is flagged as critical by some security firm, not acknowledged by MS until a week later, and then not release a patch because it would be out of cycle. Fix your damn OS Microsoft instead of releasing half-assed anti-spyware apps and an even more bloated messenger with just 10 times the stupid features to annoy people on your contact list.

Sorry for this long post, but I mean, really, if you think about it from a real world perspective, I can't see any "good" that Apple switching to Windows could possibly bring. In fact, Apple's computers would probably cost even more if they switched, because Apple's full OS is $129, Microsofts is $300.

I can see the headlines now...."Apple switches to Windows, Mac users everywhere die a little inside. Norton Anti-virus stock triples"

In other news, Steve Jobs shot by irrate ex-Mac user. More at 9.

#363671

NO... a real mac fanatic will use iPod to hit Steve in head... :P

#363676

flyakite, personnally I always loved Apple for their innovative ideas. I love Art.Lebedev for the same thing as much. Well, when there's nothing to emulate - you think we would stop then? We will have to innovate! And on the other hand, Apple software designers won't be all slaughtered as their project would be stopped. No, they'll all get hired somewhere. So we'll have the same innovations from just some another brand and that's it.

AND Windows is not a problem. At least for me. Yes, when you buy a Frankenstein PC, made of some incompatible cheap nonames, and then have some general purpose OS installed on it - you will have problems because you were buying problems. Try to buy some notebook, especially $2000 worth or above, or some pre-built brand named desktop PC - you'll have a preinstalled OS and a complete, unattended recovery CDs (just in case :)), and you'll have it stable! I have 1.5 years old Windows XP Home Edition SP1 on my laptop - never reinstalled, never updated, never had ANY troubles. At home I've got 2 PCs, about $1000 worth each. SAME THING with WXP Pro NO SPs!I never had any serious problems under Windows. Am I doing something seriously wrong or what? All I had was a few hardware failures (ehh those nonames, Fujitsu drives... l'avare paye deux fois). Windows always behaves fine. So, it is not a problem.

And remember, there are a few OS for PC, not only Windows. Again, remember, the OS X was built on the UNIX foundation. I think someday Microsoft will do the same thing too (most probably they'll buy RedHat :)), so the new Windows will be a breakthrough. But I think, XP was already a breakthrough, not just a 2k with WindowBlinds built-in.

Anyway, I believe in Apple. They always make the best things. You think, their hi-end PCs wont be stable and virus-protected enough? I believe, it will, if it only would exist.

Yet another funny idea visited me lately: Apple is a mission of aliens on Earth. Now, as they established the powerful IT industry, they might leave, earthlins could develop without assistance now. They also might be running low on some resource, so they all just have to leave, or they'll die.

Or maybe, Apple is ruled by the devil himself. Pay attention to their logo - the bitten apple.

Won't happen, but they have already dropped Darwin due to the fears that the open source will be used to crack OSX to run on any hardware. (Not that it isn't already, but releasing code themselves will just make it easier).

#363727

They dropped Darwin? Well, that stinks.

If Jobs were ever to take OS X off the map, we would all have nothing to do.
