Yep, nice big version description. This is the first public beta of Nubs.

Notes..

• For those of you unfamiliar with Nubs and how to use it, please view this video (courtesy StickyWindows) http://www.donelleschi.com/stickywindows/. This video is pretty much how Nubs works.
  
• Nubs REQUIRES the .NET 2.0 Framework. Go here if you dont have it already. No, you can not use a beta version of 2.0 with this.
  
• WindowBlinds is known to butt heads with this, but it wont kill your windows or anything, it just makes window redrawing slow (according to Sunb1rd) and occasionally you have to kick the window a little to get it to redraw completely.
  
• Yz shadow does some funky business and tends not to react when Nubs hides a window. I'm not doing anything out of the ordinary, so I'm going to be brave and blame this on Yz shadow.
  
• This beta expires (will cease to run) on Feb 28th, 2006.
  

Errors you may find..

• I'm not interested in reports on how you *think* the app should work. We've been testing this for a few weeks privately and have all that worked out. (Sorry to be blunt)
  
• If you get a .NET exception (very important!); use http://rafb.net/paste to paste all of the information that the error dialog gives you. Once you submit the paste on that site, please record the URL in your address bar. That will allow me to view your paste. That's the only way I'll be able to effectively fix any exceptions you may get. Please reply to this post, or PM me, with the link back to your pasted exception text (from rafb.net/paste).
  
• '(Something) doesnt work' - doesnt help anyone at all. Please dont reply in this fashion. You'll force me to lose hair at a faster rate.

Hey hey, first to comment! Excellent to see this finally hitting the public. Going to test it out now!

Edit:

First thing I noticed is that it is a very slick application (more polished than mine is) although I have noticed in the few minutes playing with it a couple of things.

Getting used to single click to fade in / double click to fade out is a little strange. I'm constantly having the window re-fade out on me. Not really anything major - just a personal nuisance.

Minimizing windows that have already been tabbed go back to the taskbar and not to the tab meaning that if I've selected "Hide nubbed tasks in taskbar" they still appear there and are selectable from the taskbar. Shouldn't they return back to the tab and disappear from the taskbar again?

There is a slight hiccup on the fade out. Only happens on the fade out as the fade in is nice a smooth. Perhaps a drawing problem as it appears to be refreshing itself right before it fades out.

All in all though - it's a great program. Just one question: what with the expiration? Should we expect the final release then? Okay so that's two questions but they're part of a single question so really each one should count for 1/2 a ques...I'm rambling.

Ok, its really nice, I've had no problems with windowblinds.

Not suprisingly, I discovered if you move or delete the current theme, and start it back,

You'll be able to get 2 .net exception errors.

Easy way to get the errors.

1. Delete theme, and start Nubs.

2. Open config window. (Nopaste link)

3. Close config window. (link)

The expiration is so that people dont continue to use an inferior build. I had that problem with Kapsules; people using old builds/betas and debugging was 'fun' trying to figure out which version they were having issues with. Hence the expiration. It also garauntees that you'll be coming back for more if you like the app

I wasn't reporting on how I 'think' the app should work (well maybe the first one was a bit of that) but I honestly believed the 2nd and 3rd ones were bugs...

I like the idea of adding in a expiration when dealing with betas though.

1) Determine the new tab position and screen from mouse cursor (currently seems like it is calculated from window rect, which has put a tab on the left once, when I was dragging it to the top)

2) A way to change the side of current tab (top, right, bottom or left) through the context menu

3) Long texts should be auto-scrolled (maybe only on mouseover)

4) Mouseover adds some opacity, mouseout gives more transparency

5) Maybe some option "On top / On desktop" for each tab separately (ideally - saved per app/window)

6) Nubbed window's context menu copied to the tab context menu

7) A way to handle the nubbed window Minimize event and hide window to tab instead of minimizing (an option to do so, of course)

Hope this is not too much for you. This is what I would like to see in app I would use everyday.

Hi Andrew,

Impressive App!

Bug:

Windows being partially displayed after being un-Nubbed.

Steps:

1. Uncheck Enable Fade Effect and Check Hide Nubbed Window from Taskbar.

2. Nub a window.

3. Then un-Nub (I double-clicked tab).

As a side note: Can you Nub a maximised window?

The only thing I am running is Yz dock. I've turned that off and back on but same issues.

Also are the tabs single click or double click? It seems to be quite random behaviour?

Also, one last thing, when you un-Nub a window, the window doesn't receive back the focus.

The tabs are, by design, single click. What you're witnessing is an issue with windows in general that I just havent found a good solution to. When you're dealing with layered windows (which are what the tabs are, and I'm unsure if this is isolated to .NET) it takes a mouse click to activate the window (in this case the nub) and then one additional click to get the nub to perform its task. I did have some code in there to hack a solution, but it appears as if that just isnt working well enough. I'll spend some more time to get a better solution going at a later date.

I'm not suggesting that it should work differently, I was just commenting that sometimes it was single click whilst others it was double click.

But I do have an idea for you though if you want to hear!

If you drag a tab off it closes the window - kinda like when you drag an item off of a dock.

Anyways, I'm loving the app.

Ah ok. It wasn't really a request - my bad. The "nubbed" window wasn't being given the focus back when you clicked the tab to restore it when you have fading turned off.

Request:

If you have the time and the inclination maybe you would like to implement keyboard modifiers: e.g. using shift, alt and crtl modifiers. If you shift click a tab you show all tabs. alt + click perhaps turns all windows to tabs etc... i'm sure you get the gist of it.

OMG mate this is a great build, I'm running windowblinds 5 and RK Launcher and it works like a dream. Anyone using the launcher uncheck minimize to dock.

It took me longer to install Net 2.0 than getting NUBS up and running

Question, go on shoot me if I'm not suppose to ask this here, are you supposed to be able to drag the nub back onto the desktop. If not that cool, I'll just stop trying to drag it.

nubs is pretty sweet.. I really like the option of tabbing windows to the screen edges. I only have 1 problem at all so far, and it may be my own issue, but when I nub a window, and then restore it whether it's by clicking on the nub or by "show window" it doesn't redraw the window properly. I'm running the BBLean branch of bb4win, with the bbleanskin pluginrunning, but i also had the trouble without it running. other than that 1 issue this is sweet. is there a specific repository for new themes/skins?

Even when a single pixel of the window goes out of the screen the tab apears. It's anoying!

I think you should detect and decide wether a window should be "nubbed" or not based on the mouse position AND the window position.

if the mouse is on the border of the screen AND the window has some pixels out of the border THEN it should be hidden.
