Yes, Rules button is needed. Also, when a new user is registered, he MUST read the the rules (forum script will force him to see that document). Also there was an idea posted somewhere around, that new users under 10 posts must see a search field instead of New Thread form, when they press New Thread button. I think this is also a nice idea.

wait, a search field? you'd probably have a thousand posts saying they can'T post because of a bug...wait, they couldn't post it. clever...very clever... 
That sounds way to complicated to me, and pretty unnecassary, the rules button, to me, is all that is neeed. The script may take a bit too long, but it would work.
What about when you get the email to verify your registration, the rules are in there, and alo show up once you click the link. The first one may make them look at it, and the second one will.

May I suggest changing it to Rules instead? Guidelines implies that you can kinda go around them. When I saw guidelines I thought of Pirates of the Caribbean when Barbossa said, "First, your return to shore was not part of our negotiations nor our agreement, so I must do nothin'. And secondly, you must be a pirate for the Pirate's Code to apply, and you're not. And thirdly, the Code is more what you'd call "guidelines" than actual rules. Welcome aboard the Black Pearl, Miss Turner."

If people want to argue semantics and how they didn't think they needed to waste time read them, why waste the time of the staff?
haha, Lou +1 for changing "Guidelines" to "Rules". Since this is an international Forum, we will have members who don't speak English, that might have a difficult time understanding that Guidelines are Rules (in the Forum's case)

I'm new in this forum and I found more friendly the word "guidelines" (and the yellow icon). My english is not so good, but I think If someone undestand "rules", so "guidelines" too.
Well i totally agree with karlitoz, guidelines make it friendly, and if someone don't understand guidelines, he won't understand all of the rules.
If there was a red button with rules written on, I would find it annoying, never read them (well actually i only read a part of them xD) and click that rollup button.

Seriously, I've always thought we should get rid of that one. We never use it anyway. Some people may not know how to use vB at all. And I sometimes use the Members List, so that means .7 of someone else uses it also, therefore micro-useful.
I second the petition to remove the calendar icon, the member list is useful, atleast for me

I've used Members List before. Just put a link to the Calendar in Quick Links or some other accessible place and remove it. That's my suggestion, at least .
