sorry, but I really am afraid, there isn't a solution for this yet. Also if you're satisfied with only placing shortcuts on the bar instead of controling "widgets" like e.g weather desklets, too - I'm working on a new desklet called "AveDock": Once it's finished there'll be another version of it in "bar" design as well...
As for the hide/show tool I'm afraid I can't help you... 
Dude I can't add any icon on it, I'm missing something but I don't know what is. To add an icon on the bar all I gotta do is drag em?
Here I can drag nothing, even when I activate the grid, always shows that "no can do" simbol =/

actually the problem is a mix-up of two desklets 
:
This desklet is for switching between groups of desklets - not shortcuts.
These desklets can be grouped by a script/effectlet of dreadnaut (see the help-file that comes with this desklet).
The desklet that you can add icons to (a launchbar) is called "TabbedDock" -
I think that's wahat you're looking for.
Also I can't recommend to download it now - as I'm busy with a new versionof it that might come out soon enough....
