Why do you like your iPod?

I always dreamеd of an iPod with all those articles saying good thingы about the device. But I never had enough money to purchase one. So for more than five years I've been using iRiver players.

And at last I got a brand new sining Nano. What a terrible waste of money(fortunately, not mine)! The sound is not just bad -- it's terrible. No bass. No middles - only blurred highs. Equalizer is useless -- it either eliminates some frequency range or adds wheeze to sound -- like some 3-bucks-chinese-radio. /* I use high-bitrate files and really good earphones - so no blame for them */

And the secon thing is iTunes... I wouldn't blame it for large memory footprint .... But it sounds as terrible as iPod and somehow it lags everytime. I open a new window - iTunes lags playback, I open Start menu - iTunes lags, Iadd a new tab in Firefox - guess what? Yeah. Lags, lags, lags.

What's wrong with this world? iTunes and iPod are players. And as for iPod - expensive players. They're supposed to play music and do it well. Apple has been developing iPod+iTunes for quite a long time... quite enough time to make these two at least sound well. But they doing everything fine - arranging mp3 collections, showing photos, even storing my Outlook contacts....But when it comes to their main purpose - playing music -- wheeze and lags! I'm greatly confused.

So, fellow-iPodders, I ask you, why, oh why everyone's so mad about this ****?

I, too have no money for such things and probably wouldn't buy ine even if I did. There are better things to spend my paper on.

I have a 4th gen iPod but I don't even know where it is now..probably somewhere under my bed in college.

I guess back in high school, i used to listen to it at school, then on my way to work (had to take bus), break during work, and on my way back home so I loved it + it was cool to have so that's never a bad thing.. Now that I'm in college, the only time I listen to music other than in parties and whatnot is at home and I don't need to use my iPod for that. As for sound quality compared to other players, i can't say much since all i've ever owned is the 4th gen iPod, but it was good enough for me. As for iTunes, I have no problems with it. I admit it's a a bit of a resource hog, but it's not enough to slow down my pc in anyways. How much RAM do you have in your machine anyways? I'm also no audiophile, I use 320 CBR or VBR using lame and my speakers are Logitech X-530 and that's more that good for me.

I think the hype is because it's the latest fad right now. Also, the degisn is beautiful (like all apple products )

Hmm, well as far as i'm concerned, iTunes is the best media manager i know... windows media player does my head in, and sonic stage for the sony portables is the most uselss piece of kit i've ever had the displeasure of using. I think the main reason ipods are selling are because of their ease of use, good looks, and that most people who bu them aren't audiophiles. On the other hand, i've heard plenty of articles say great things about the sound quality, so i guess, like everything, it depends.

I have 1024 Mb of memory and a 1.4 Ghz Thunderbird Athlon - quite enough even for WMP not to lag. And for Winamp which is far more advanced in skinning and almost equals iTunes in cataloguing abilities.

And I don't tell anything about design -- I just can't get the point why chinese and korean players like iRiver and NEXX and iGator and so on, that are sometimes twice cheaper than, iPods sound well and implement different sound enchantment algotithms just out-of-the-box.... and iPod which is in production for several years offers only add-me-some-hiss equalizer which makes sound even worse?

iTunes - best media player and works great on my Pentium powered laptop with 512mb of RAM

iPod - best media player out there with best GUI and ease of use. Does everything i can and does it in style.

Tried iRiver and Creative players before but couldn't stand them. Terrible GUI, crapload of features that i don't use, ugly and feel cheap. Like they were made by blind elfs using cheap materials >.<

Plus their sound quality isn't much better than the iPod's. Afterall everyone who's talking about sound quality and listening to mp3 files needs to think twice about his/her audiophile status.

I Like my ipod as its a 20gig 4th gen ipod so it has retro appeal....also its got a blue rebel iskin evo2 wild sides case which makes it look so much more striking.

Also i have Sony MDR-EX71 in ear headphones that when used with the ipod internal amp give great quality sound!

Agreed on almost all points.

I got my iPod as a gift, and well its awesome.

I'm going to keep getting iPods as:

1. Great GUI, its so simple, everything is reachable within 3 button clicks

2. There is no difference in audio quality between the major DAPs. Anyone who tells you otherwise is full of it. A plus for the iPod though is that its apparently the msot "neutral" sounding player, which is great with IEMs (as told to me by a fellow audiophile/golden ear man).

3. Easy to manage. As much as I hate iTunes (75,000 K of mem idle is absolutely a joke.) but nothing beats it in terms of managing the iPod. Maybe only Anapod Explorer. That is pretty much the only one.

What I hate about the iPod:

No gapless playback

iTunes (memory usage)

edit - Unbe - Theres a community of Audiophiles that use MP3 as their standard: ubernet.org. Trust me, I can't tell the difference between those mp3s and original on my Shure E3cs, my Sennheiser HD555 My friends HD580 w/ his amp/soundcard)

Mp3 = best audio standard out there in terms of acceptance, size for file, and sound quality per file.

Just thought of another reason why i like my ipod. They're really robust. at least, the 4th gen with black and white lcds are. Skiing, snowboarding, biking, whatever, mine is covered in seriously nasty looking dents which go right into the metal, but it still plays fine though, plus it's even pretty good at water resistance (...yeah ok so i do abuse it rather a lot...), though i find the clicker a little frustrating in extreme temperatures.... though i think that is being very picky And my battery is slowly... dying... EDIT: and they should put the laser engravings under the finish.. mine have all rubbed off!

Even though i've run out of space on my iPod mini, it still satisfys pretty much all my needs. I've dropped it countless times and its still going strong. I used to have a Muvo but the UI really sucked. Everyone loves iPods.... at least, they should.

I don't have a portable mp3 player, as I don't require one with my current lifestyle. That being said, there is nothing wrong with wanting great/better sound quality even if it is an MP3 player.

MP3 Players are better than other portable alternatives because of the small file sizes allowing a large repertoire of songs, as well as non-moving parts so there is no skipping. These are probably two of the main selling points of ANY portable listening device. I'm not a techgeek admittedly when it comes to audio stuff, but I don't believe there is any better alternative for someone who is on the go, at least not in an affordable price range.

Audiophiles can have great home theatre setups, etc and still want music for running, working out, etc. Back to the original topic at hand, I agree with others that the user interfaces I have seen from other competitors aren't as good as an Ipod's (hardwarewise) or Itunes (softwarewise). That being said, it's pretty clear to me that Apple's Brand Identity they have established with the Ipod is worlds better than their competitors. And the power of brand in today's day and age can be more important to a customer (depending on the target market) than the product's quality itself!

I love my iPod because of how powerful it is. I'm running on old firmware which allows me to use Smart Playlists on my iPod that automatically update.

Thus, I can create a smart playlist within iTunes that has all my 4-star songs, disconnect my iPod, rate a song 4 stars from the iPod, and then go back and look at the playlist--WHAM! There's the song. Didn't even have to connect it back to the computer.

Of course, the newest firmware released will not allow one to do this. This is on my 4G, by the way.

i have a mini and although i have ran out of space i am satisfied with it, i love it for it'd ergonomics and style.

iTunes is by far the best media player out there, it is much nicer than WMP. Sound quality and looks.

I liked mine until I realized that it's quite cuttable with an exactoknife, they updated it 4 times in 2005, and my sister dropped hers wrecking the screen and taking mine (because I haven't used it for months).

I have no use for one with a PowerBook... plus, music hurts my ears, though I like it.

stick with what youve got....as ipods stay cool even though they get outdated.....because they have such good design the iPods get immediate retro appeal once they become obsilete (True in the case of my 4gen 20giger).

If you get a Creative Zen youll find that it wont have anything special about it once its old....it'll become 'another peice of electronics to throw away - made by a company with the creativity and originallity of a goldfish blowing bubbles in a fish bowl.

btw, on a completely unrelated matter,a friend of mine tried to prove a point the other day by saying that the ipod nano was so small he could fit it in his mouth.....it was a bad idea as he sneezed ans accidentally bit the screen and cracked it.....so then he took it back to where i work part-time (PCWorld - The Microsoft Equivalent to PC Retail in the UK) and as it was under applecare still my friend pitched in another £80 to get a Ipod 30gig (its not called the 'iPod Video' its just an 'iPod with Video') As he said it was a pixel fault which was a blatent lie as you could see teeth marks on the iPod!

As iPods bring out the best in my co-workers thats another reason why i like iPods. (But according to my friend they don't taste that nice and arent easy to chew).

i've got a 4G color 20 gig ipod. it cost me a lot, but it was worth it. it's one of those well-designed and well-made things that make your life that much better every time you look at them. plus, the attention to detail is amazing. every little thing works just the way i expect it to.

i wish i could say the same about itunes. it's huge, slow, buggy and if it wasn't for multiplugin, it'd be fugly.

Who cares about the GUI? Is that all that matters? The looks, not the quality of sound? Last time I checked my iPod while I was listening to it, it was in my pocket. So GUI doesn't really matter because your not going to stare at the iPod's GUI like an idiot.

Me, I have a Mini. In my opinion, that's all I ever really need. The new gen iPod (video), is a waste of time for Apple. Who watches videos on an iPod? If I wanted to watch something, I would get a frikken laptop.

As for bass, yes it does suck. But, put your EQ to Rock and you'll get decent bass and such.

well i like listening to atmospheric drum n bass, and the eq on bass ins't that great, have to change it to electronic to get anything decent. I still love it though.
