Perhaps set it up to update periodically rather than virtaully instantly, and that should reduce the strain somewhat.

I think what I'll do is, have the chat turned off by default, then added a toolbar item of the ichat icon, then it popup under the breadcrumbs on the forum index.

I'll see about looking into finding an alternative script this weekend.
