I'm currently using a theme that I found, but its pretty borning.. Themes can be created and modified. Xoops is a PHP based.

edit: and it appears there is a misscomunication kaloyster and me are DONE. The site is ready to go, just clearance needed and easy to set up in about an hour.

yes we have a category that is called "Desklets", and you can place downloads there. Currently you can do uploads through the admin-panel only. So I am looking for something, that could integrate a user upload.
I am unable to open the site (http://avedesk.needlemen.com/) and as a result unable to access the v1.3... Has the site been down or something else I do not know happened?
Some thing must be going on with the site...I can't get to it either...so it's not just you gsklee
Yeah the needlemen accounts are having these problems lately. Ave, I know you can read this (I can see your nick down there) please inform us (me and neals) about the website. We've been trying to contact you but you wouldn't reply.

I guess I'll be the first one to comment. The picture looks nice... but you don't really show anything of the actual website. How does the other pages look, are they graphic intense?

uhm, well the background will stay, its a wordpress weblog so I basically just have some beta content now.. we can make it a s graphic intense as we like, but I think a screenshot that takes you to the download of the desklet should be enough?
Hmm.. So the theme is all "Dark"?
Looks nice and clean, but I personally don't like Dark themes. Makes me get the feeling that things are "Grim". But thats my opinion.
I like blue. 
is the design for the site still "open"? i.e. if something is created will it still be considered?
I don't know about avedesk.needleman.com, But for avedesk.philc.ca I can say yes. I'm using Xoops content management. So a theme or and entire rewrite (PHP or whatever ) can can do the basic stuff that I want need.
I know that Andreas would like to have a site like the one I have, but he can't afford to spend too much time on it since he's very busy person.
Ok so if i throw this down as a little preview of the kind of style i'm thinking, would i be wasting my time to keep working on it?
no.... not for me... I like that.. Logo could be abit bigger. 
How are you planning to do this (php, static, asp?).
My server supports PHP / MySQL.. Php is usually safe since lots of servers support it..
If you do a theme for xoops, then it would be easy to use it... Unless you love coding everything. Download section / with ability to upload and rights .
Well i'll have a play wround with xoops first, i've never used it before, otherwise i might just have a stab at it myself though. PHP + MySQL it is

Design is by kaloyster I forgot to mention, you might noticed at the bottom. Yeah well..I thought it would be cool, cause as you might have noticed AveDesks Standard desklets are dark too.

But more important, it does exactly what people will need in the future.
I've been debating the idea of buying avedesk.ORG or what ever... but I'm not in the mood of paying for 2 domains.. I already own philc.ca for obvious reasons
so if I understand right you are like the guy that runs the AveDesk-site pcm? uhm so it would be you that sets up the site?
I operate avedesk.philc.ca or www.avedesk.org . Avedesk.needelmen.com is Andreas and that will always be his..
I don't think Andreas wants to make his site too complex or stuff. I created avedesk.org (1 hour ago yahoo 15$ for 5 years.. OMG thats cheap) so that we can have 1 site to orginize all the downloads... I'm sure in the future I'll need mirror sites. But for now, I got plenty of Bandwidth (100g +)unless the company changes the policy.
And since desklets are small, I'm pretty sure it will be ok for awhile. If ever it comes close, then I'll be posting on the forums about future changes
Since Scripter release and site launch, there has been 15 gigs of transfer. Which is sorta ok considering the size of the desklets.
Just keep one thing in mine, you don't want the site to be too graphic oriented cause that sucks bandwidth.

if you're ever stuck for bandwidth i have hundreds of gigs spare i'll just give you an ftp account. though it's a needlemen account which have been unreliable as of late, though i think this is manily down to them migrating a lot of things. i just hope the reliability comes back again.

I don't mind what system/content web is used. I just used xoops cause it was easy adn had everything I needed.
Anyhow things needed for a site
- Download / Upload of desklets
- No registration needed to download, but required to upload
- Categories for download and ability to comment, vote, track downloads, update and screenshot
- Only the user that uploaded can update / and admin
- RSS 2 to categories.
- Ability to get notified when "Update" or "New File"
Extra feature that would be nice:
- News / Polls
- Top downloads
And any other cool features
