Aqua-Soft ForumsIs there any way to create a margin at the bottom of my desktop so that when I maximize windows, it only maximizes up to the margin? The reason is because I want my dock to show at all time, but I don't want it to overlap my current window.

Or you can forget about maximize function =) Use resize corner and make window size you like... I'm working thi s way.

There are several solutions to this problem, although for some people they don't work (and everyone else seems to think they're crazy.)
There's Hawkeye's Shellinit and a whole boatload of other programs (DesktopCoral and djwilliams' are others that come to mind) that essentially work the same way, sort of mimicking the way the Windows taskbar reserves space on the screen. And then there's WindowFX which probably has a more fundamental implementation. I prefer(ed--see below) WindowFX because with the others, when Explorer hangs/restarts, or a slew of other events that are occasionally triggered by programs, those programs often have to be run again. I found this fairly annoying, and I'm almost certain Shellinit suffers the problem. For example, if you want to resize/move your taskbar, you have to reload the program. If you use tclock2, I'm pretty sure it will randomly reset what Shellinit has done.
These solutions are all great, unless you're like me and about a half dozen other people I've observed who have a problem where, when Windowblinds is loaded, these solutions all refuse to work. This is the phenomenon where maximized Windows will take random dimensions and be placed, say, at 5,-10 screen coordinates and no longer behave like maximized Windows (i.e., you can move them.) Unfortunately, it seems like most people would rather dismiss the problem, so if it happens to you too, I'm at a loss for why. I've read that it may be a problem with certain skins, but I haven't been able to find a skin where it isn't a problem, and all the solutions to fix skin codes have proven useless.
Sorry, that's my rant on the matter. I've just had a really annoying setup for the last few months because of this.
And frankly, I think it's really silly that there isn't a simple way of doing it in XP. It seems like such a simple, trivial thing to do, and yet there are so many quirks and oddities about how we have to go about doing it. If we even can.
You could use Samurize. Create an object then stretch it all the way to the edges of the screen, then resize to the size of your dock. (I'll assume it's for a dock, since i can't think of any other reason you'd want to add a margin to your screen) After that, just select "dock to bottom" or something like that; voila! maximize all you want, it won't go past that margin. It's also very light on memory and CPU-friendly.
The only issue with this is that if you have a crash or something, i.e. explorer crash, you'll have to reload samurize. That's it.
Even prettier: set bblc or xoblite as your shell, replacing explorer.exe. Both have "set desktop area option", and as bonuses, you will get virtual desktops, desktop menu, and keybord shortcuts as well

You can also use xBar to resize your desktop (xBar - Build 1.60). It's a command line app that only loads once during startup and doesnt use any resources, and can also hide tasks from the Task Bar. I can't seem to find a working link for it, so if the other soultions posted don't work for you PM me your email and I'll send it to you.
djwilliams' app doesn't seem to have any effect on my desktop.
EDIT: Strange... it has an effect on my icons, but nothing else.
EDIT(2): Hawkeye Shellint works. I can't seem to set more than two margins, but that's ok.

If it's possible, do it, but only if does not shake the stability or implements more bugs!
You should do it cause i like haveing your dock alaways on top and without "automatically hide" checked!
PS: I know this is not the place but can you do a nightly build with minimize exclusions list enabled?
For me is stable as stable a win app can be, so i only need that now.

Yes! If time allows for it. Not having to run another app is always a good thing. I hate to make a request but where were on the subject... if you do decide to implement this feature you should also add the option to hide running tasks from the Task Bar (this way tasks are only shown in the Dock but the Task Bar is still visible).

well.. but can windows go ontop of it? the behaviour should be
- no maximazation larger than what the margin has set
- but still can drag windows on top of the marginal area.
