Which One?.........Can't Decide

Right know I have a Mac Mini computer, I only had it for 5 months know but know I want to get a Powermac G5. My question is should I wait until apple comes out with the intel chip or just get the powermac right know. I wanted to buy the computer today but couple of my friends that was with me at the time, say that I should wait for the intel chip, is there any different's between the powermac know or When apple puts the intel chip in, does that mean there will be more games selection for the mac. I don't know alot about mac so I don't know what's the difference between a intel chip or apple's G5 dual 2.7GHz power pc G5 processor, i'm planning to buy the computer on christmas. I just wondering should I wait or go ahead and buy it.

It is same thing! u still cant play games because Mac is based on UNIX.

I think you should wait!

Well.... if you are getting it by Christmas, you aren't getting an Intel chip. I would wait to get it until then just in case Apple ups it a little to entice people.

One plus about waiting for the intel chip is the possibility of running Windows on a PowerMac. However, it would involve two different hard drives (as Windows needs FAT32 while Mac needs HFS) and a BIOS upgrade/hack. It would be one of the first to switch to Intel, as the developer kits use Intel PowerMacs already.

Actually, I think you might want a PC in addition to your Mini! If you aren't doing anything amazingly processor-intensive with Mac applications, why get a bigger Mac? And with a new PC you can run all the good PC programs while still having a Mac (as opposed to only having Mac support.)

I am a OSx86 Mac intel user. My advice is to wait, this thing is fast !

No you're not. You're a pirating fool trying to look cool by repeatedly bragging how you're using pirated software.

Do this once more and i will permanently ban you. I'm sick of your **** chepilin.

I think you should wait too.

P.S. Nice User name ;)

Well liquidplasmaflow actually I already own a Dell Xps PC, in a addition to a Mac mini. I just want to get other bigger computer. Im getting a big bonus for christmas and think buying a PowerMac G5 would be a nice.

I say wait for Intel, if you already have a mac.

That way your mac will be able to run all future apple products :D such as Mac OS 11/XI

Yuuuuuuuuuus, so just buy the thing now!

Being based on Unix has NOTHING to do with games on Mac.

Can people be any more clueless?

#318800

hmmm, i dunno but maybe backing up what you say rather than calling people clueless might get somewhere?

It doesnt matter what kind of base it has, gaming=windows. Thats all you need to know.

#318819

Let me back it up then.

1. The main thing missing from OSX that prevents a lot of game ports is DirectX which is propriatery to MS so all games have to be re-written/optimized to OpenGL which is no easy task and the main reason why only big name developers can afford it and only hit games are ported

2. Unix core of OSX has nothing to do with games

3. Apple's marketshare puts Mac ports on the backseat and there is a small number of companies making the dual platform releases simultaneously

4. CPU arch is also an obstacle. Thought this should change with the big switch.

How's that?

#318828

Its not just directx, theirs also a number of dll files........

#318832

Did i say it was just DirectX? I said (and it is) the most important.

And waht exactly "dll files" are missing? Just out of curiosity.

#318839

Uhm, the whole system32 folder maybe? Games dont run off of directx and a few other things, they do need the system files lol

#318842

Well obviously.

#318855

I went to CompUSA here in San Diego, and their was a apple rep their and and I was asking him whats the difference between the intel-apple duel processors and this is what he said when he e-mailed me back

I get this question a lot. It depends on how you look at it. In my opinion it's not a bad idea to pick up a machine now before the new generation comes out because it is tested and trial proven. All the bugs have been worked out in other words. If you wait for the next generation you may have to wait two or three years to get the same level of quality assurance and at that point who's to say yet another generation won't be in the pipeline. You can see how easy it is to fall into a pattern of waiting and never having your dream machine. So I guess I'd say its worth it to snag one before the Christmas season makes them scarce. I plan on doing it myself actually. I'm buying a dual 2.3 this fall.

Best Regards,

Alex

Hi,

This Darrell, I talked to you on Saturday about the Apple's Powermac G5 computer, I want to ask you a question before I buy it, Sense apple is moving towards using Intel chip's in there Macintosh computer next year, and I know there going to use the lower end computers first and then use the higher end in 2007. I want to ask you should I wait for the intel version of apple computer or get a powermac g5 know. What is going to be a difference between the two beside's the processors. I already own a Dell Xps Gen 4 computer and a Mac mini but I want to graduate to powermac g5. I just can't decide which one to get and sense you work at apple I thought you might have some insight on the issue. Some say it good and some say it's bad and I don't which one to believe? what do you think?

You really don't have no clue what porting a game means, do you?

#319424

No, obviously he doesn't. ;) Unbeliever is right. The biggest obstacle will remain DirectX - even after the switch to Intel. Just compare it to the current situation with Linux.

You can run OpenGL based Windows games on Linux without too much hassle or performance drops through WINE.

Don't fool yourselves into thinking that game publishers will port more games to Mac OS X after the switch to Intel. But I am quite sure that you will be able to run Windows on Macs sooner or later.

I am too considering buying a Mac and I will definitely wait.

Ive gamed on linux, you know that program called wine? It has system32 DLL files, try running anything on windows without them, YOU CANT.

Clue.. try getting one.

Do you even know how WINE works? Obviously not.

Forget it... not gonna waste my time on a clueless N3Wb!E

#319508

You already did reading my post lol, yes I know how wine works. Its an emulator. It emulations the win32 environment.

#319509

Wrong; it doesn't emulate anything.

Wine uses the Win32 API, which is a system library developed for Windows NT. Win32 is not dependent on Windows, and Windows isn't entirely dependent on Win32. Win32 is simply a way of doing things that a lot of the Windows system and programs use. Thus, an implementation of the API for Linux allows the use of Windows programs there.

#319513

rjohnstone said it all and stilist put the nail in your coffin. I'm not even going to go into detail why your logics is flawed.

Final point is, OSX being UNIX based has nothing to do with games.
