you mean like in linux recompile it adding your own modules and styuff like that? cause microsoft stuff is closed source and you need the original source to recompile the kernel...

How Often Do You Re-install An OS
Compiling means taking source code, a human readable language, and converting it into computer readable language (binary). Windows (and all other closed source apps) are distributed as BINARIES. It was compiled on another computer. The reason people like to compile themselves, is because it optimizes the code for your processor.
Yeah, the kernel is the base of an operating system. Every OS has one.
The pre-2000 Windows kernel is DOS. I believe 7.x
Windows 95 has dos 7.0
Windows 98 has DOS 7.1
and so on...
I kinda knew about the kernel thing, I was just not sure it was a kernel as in the same context as linux
Well, The Windows kernel wasn't DOS in the sense of the "old days". It was actually DOS's kernel, but it didnt have a name, so calling it DOS is the best explanation, even though it makes no sense, as DOS means Disk Operating System, and the DOS kernel isnt an OS, oh well, never mind.
What version did ME have, I wonder?
ME was version 7.2!

The reson I say that was that Windows ME had so little improvents over 98. Windows 98 in my opinio is the best Operating System in the world,it is a VERY powerful OS! acually OS X and 98 are a tie. :canadian:
It wasnt the kernel (only) that made ME so crappy, it was that they didnt add any new features, they basically just re-released the OS. And at that point, 98 was pretty old. 3 years. It would be like MS releasing XP now. You expect more.
Yeah, 98 is amazing, Protected Memory just slows the system down.

Well, actually I have both and I can safely say that 98 is much better.
Well I just thought I had to add this in here. After running my system for a while and trying to repicate what I thought was a bug in certain program I use, the system became unstable as all heck. So I restarted the computer and low and behold the system would not load the GUI but kindly told me that it could not verify that my copy of Windows XP was legaly licesned. My copy of XP is completely legal by the way. I rebooted several times but the message just kept comming up. So I rebooted one more time and used the boot option to roll the system back to the last known good configuration. Well that fixed the licensing issue but I soon found that my video drivers were gone and it looked liked somehow the system found an old copy of shell32.dll hidden somewhere and loaded that instead. Well I first attacted the video driver problem by reinstallling the drivers and rebooting again. Than I started looking over all the copies of shell32.dll on my system. Funny thing was is that the copy of shell32.dll in my system32 folder was the modified version from Iceman as it should have been, but for some reason it kept giving me the default XP icons. So I then flushed the icon cache but that didn't help either. So I went and started to replace the various .dll files that I could on the fly so to speak and then rebooted the system. Now everything is back to normal. There for a while I was getting very close to thinking I was going to have to reinstall XP for the ground up and I was not going to be a happy camper.
I had just recently completely finshed my GUI mods and was very happy about how everything looked. Heres a link to picture of my present desktop. http://63.224.48.65/~impulse/My%20XP%20Install.JPG
Well that pretty much somes that up. I only have to on average do a reinstall if something drastic happens or I change out a motherboard which what caused the last reinstall I did.

I've used mine numerous time with no problem.
...anyway I only reinstall if something goes wrong, it's alot of work to get all my tweaks and software in place...so i voted once a year.
maybe once for xp, and this was after numerous hacking and messing around with the system.
i'm now using windows 2003 server: standard Edition . no problems so far.

been lucky i guess - I use JV16 and perfect disk - still running fine I think, near a year.
Ive never had to reinstall FreeBSD, and ive been running it for a long time.
Ive reinstalled linux like twice, and once wasnt really needed, I just felt it was easier than fixing the problem (lazy me).
I've reinstalled XP twice in the last eight months, both because of my own tinkering with system files going awry.
the last time i tried to reinstall windows (last week)... i ended up reinstalling it 10 times. 
I installed Widnows XP about a week ago again!
WinXP SP1a has been very stable for me...I have had to do 2 reinstalls (fresh) since its release 10/01...The reinstalls for needed because of my 'tinkering'.
Since coming to the world of Mac emulations, my system has been stable, and with all the tweaked system files that I now have and cherish, it would take a major incident for me to reinstall again...
I do system maintenance at least once a week...
I installed XP 3 Times using any edition. Home or Pro.
I just installed Windows XP Professional on my VirtualPC and holy sh##! Its too awesome yet a lil bit slow. I posted this through Virtual PC running Windows XP. How nice.
