I don't want to start a flamewar, but there just aren't any compelling reasons to change to Linux as I don't like text-based OS'es. By text-based I mean that to make a Linux system decent, it is essential and you have to drop to the f***ing commandline, and I see no point in doing that. I can't remember last time I was in at the commandline in Windows last, but it was years ago, thank God!
Oh, I've installed and tried numerous distros over the years, and still, there's no reason to change, unless you like the commandline and all obscure commands and switches. I certainly don't.

Your entitiled to your opinion, but the command line hasn't left by choice. They want to keep the kernel seperate from the GUI, for stability and customizability reasons, therefore, the command line will always be needed. And some people (like me, at times) prefer it. 
Solaris is not sh##, its good. If you tried their x86 version, dont expect too much, because the OS is meant to be on thier 64bit platform.

If u try to understand or learn the Linux-Unix command line is 100 times better and more powerful than Microsoft CLI is or ever was , Im usually finding new commands that make it more intersting , I hope I never become a point and click dependant or GUI dependant as some people outthere if they dont have a nice GUI they cant do or install anything. :own:

I don't know, I think they were Ultrasparc machines, that means 64bit doesn't it?
anyway, it feels like going back to windows 3.1 when i need to use them.
I dont know why you didnt like it. Its really not the kernel that makes an OS, its the software, and theres been plenty of GNU software ported to it. GNOME, KDE, Gimp, etc.
Besides that, it runs like any other *nix.

Probably the reason i felt it was crap because it was loaded with the worst software.

actually, Solaris is a EXCELENT OS, however it is intended for enterprise applications. At my company we run everything in Solaris 8/9 in both Sparc and Intel Platforms.
As far as that screenshot of solaris.. well.. if you run X-Windows with openwin instead of gnome yeah it will look like that.. but the default windows manager for Solaris is now gnome not CDE, if your windows manager was not upgraded don't blame the OS, blame your lazy ass S.A (Systems Administrator) for not updating it. I'll post tomorrow and screenshot of my work station.

fair point. I don't know what these particular machines are capable of running though. Maybe these ones are too slow for gnome, i don't know
