[ann] eploriX - Finder Clone

explorix_banner.jpg

All right.... today I've started a big project which will kill my summer holidays.

;)

I'm going to develop a new Finder Clone which has the advantages of neXplorer and is speedy like the normal Windows Explorer. I know, that it's a long way - but I hope that I can trust on you guys to make this the most realistic finder clone ever.

What does the project contain?

- Building the application

- Building a website

What does the project need?

- Beta-Testers (later)

...

Please, don't ask for things like "when will it be finished" or something like that. I can't tell you - but I hope the best.

===========================================

Alpha 0.4 preview release 29.06.2005 (requires .net Framework 2.0!!!)

A new little update

Updates:

- Windows tray icon (Hide/Show exploriX, exit, settings)

- Started programming the sidebar

- Settings/Appearance now filled

- Hide exploriX by clicking on the "-" button in the lower right-hand corner

- Searchbox programmed for switching to folders (sorry, doesn't work yet - just a test ;) )

Thanks to CDi2 for hosting my projects

Good luck. Windows Shell coding is hard, lots of interfaces, obscure flags, undocumented behaviour. Etc... etc... etc...

Hope that you can manage to build something useable :)

Good luck...adopt raduking's strategy. Take the best of both worlds.

If I recall, NeXplorer was closest to 1:1 Finder.

Looca had the best skinning engine (again, could be wrong--bzeitler did several skins, see if you can talk to him about his opinions).

Just integrate where you can, and take the best of both worlds.

See what you can do--I for one am looking forward to it (I'll even beta, whenever you're ready).

Good luck!

#293860

Good luck, I'll be sure to follow the progress!

#293868

Good luck ill be really looking forward to this project!

Currently using nexplorer because it loads faster then looca.

but i liked looca better as it fit seemlessly to my desktop apperance and was easier to work with(skin wise).

Oh sweet, I'll be following this closely. Currently I just use Explorer with Kabal's finderbar, but a standalone, almost 1:1 speedy app is just what I need :) Would be awesome if you could customize the icons, etc without having to go into code :)

#293877

Good luck :)

If you want i can give you the support on my page.

I don't know exactly what that support should mean , but i am free for help you with this project by adding something to my page , like info for beta testers or something you think up.

I would really enjoy a fast and usable file browser.

If I could help you with the website, contact me on any IM.

Good luck man, this seems awesome. I have been wanting a quick, easy finder clone.

If you need a beta tester, I'm in. :P

Good luck with the project, I really hope u succeed.

As a word of advice, if you are unable to get the multi-view browsing faster than previous attempts, just ditch it, & concentrate on making a fast useable program that still has advantages over explorer.

Also try to make it use windows icons too. This way if they have been changed ( :P ) its not necessary to customize again, I not possible ntegrate a good icon changing system, the first option is preferable because it probably saves resources.

It may also be a good idea to try & contact previous developers, you may gain some valuable information from them. & could make it easyer to achieve your resul! at least you may find wich options may not be the best in terms of speed!

good development, & hope hope it all goes well so we can all ditch explorer for good!

#294075

Hey ho :)

I made a little overview for you and myself, so that I can manage my time much better ;)

1. Finishing ATM 10.4 project (couple of days)

2. Back to exploriX development

a) features on first internal alpha release

- Switch between folders via Sidebar

- Add folderlinks to Sidebar

- First set of preferences (folder to show on startup, icon size...)

- and of course: Feedback function for testers ;)

B)planed features for future releases

- Drag'n'Drop

- File-Search via searchbox

- Customizing (Skins, icons etc.)

- switch views (icon view, list view, collum view

and maybe a Tiger Finder like Spotlight view)

- color labels

- standard file functions (copy,paste,rename,settings...)

...............

As I said earlier I don't know how long it'll take to let this become real. It's a freetime-based project and I also have to take care of school and job ;)
