[ann] RocketDock

RocketDock is a smoothly animated, alpha-blended application launcher that is similar to Y'z Dock. RocketDock renders quickly like MobyDock, has the visual sharpness of AquaDock, and the stability that neither seem to possess.

It is compatible with every dock skin format we are aware of. In fact, if you have a skin that doesn't load properly, send it to us, along with a screenshot of what it should look like and we'll see what we can do about integrating the format...

Features:

  • Runs smooth on slower computers
  • Alpha-blended PNG icons
  • Fully customizable
  • True multi-monitor support
  • Simple drag-n-drop interface
  • Compatible with Y'z Dock, Mobydock, ObjectDock, and AquaDock skins

System Requirements:

  • Windows 2000 or above.
  • 800Mhz or faster CPU (preferably)
  • 10MB RAM free

Interesting. Thanks :)

Dual monitor support is nice to see. The responsiveness of the dock seems to be commendable as well.

However, I suspect there is no docklet support at this point.

Are there any plans in regards to docklets?

Edit: The dock seems to hog up processor cycles whenever you start clicking on things that have nothing to do with the dock. Fire up the task manager and keep an eye on RockerDock.exe; whenever you start doing something else on the computer the CPU usage goes up to mid 20s and then slowly hovers down.

Smooth movement but used 14meg of mem compared to >1 that yz's uses on my box. lots of potential though.

#293632

Work on the memory usage and you'll have a perfect dock ;)

#293641

This runs great on my PIII 1Ghz. Only one thing is missing, animate the icons when launching an app. I was expecting this, as all of the other docks have it. Other than that, Great Work!!

#293653

sounds really fishy. very very simaler to rklauncher with multiple docklet capatiblility and claims. a rip maybe? good application though.

#293655

Looks very nice & is smooth too :) Are you going to implement docklet support in the future?

Cheers

You people need to keep in mind that I did not make this application, I'm just spreading the word. That's why it's an [ann] tag and not a [rel] tag, and in the Windows Software forum and not in the Community Applications forum. Sorry for the confusion.

Here's information on how to contact the developers. Maybe they'll even join AQ if there's enough support!

Different options, different scaling, different behaviour. It's not ;)

#293689

well. that's a releif. just hope that it dosen't try to copy ANY other dock not onl radukin's.

#293714

so many docks...

btw, i can't seem to find the minimized windows in rocket dock... where does it go?

#293716

Hmm...it would have to be darn good to replace RK's...may give it a try though.

#293761

it dosen't minimize i think.

#293765

pretty interesting alternative! Now with YzDock 'dead' (as well mobydock) there are very nice alternatives like RK and this ones!. Thanks to the ppl that keep alive the dock 'scene'

#293863

I like to see it [not hidden], but it won't hide when using any other program.

It always stays on top, any settings besides Always Hide to keep it behind would be VERY nice.. ..

Well, just for future reference, I have been a member of this forum for a few months. I am a developer for Punk! Software. Just thought I would clear up a few things about RocketDock.

Before that though I want to say thanks to DrEaMs In DiGiTaL for posting RocketDock as an announcement and not taking creadit for the program. :) Saved me some time. Was gonna get around to posting RocketDock here but been very busy with updates and bug fixed.

Now to address some things mentioned in this thread:

1. RKLauncher rip-off...

Honestly, we had plans for RocketDock before RK Launcher was ever released. We realized people might get them mixed up after we did release RocketDock. We do not plan on trying to steal users from RK Launcher in any way. We repect his work. His dock is an amazing peice of software. These are all free applications, no one is trying to take over the world. ;)

2. CPU Usgae bug...

We just released an update to RocketDock (v1.0.1) we resolved some of these bugs. One does remain, if you unset RockertDock to autohide the CPU usage does go up a bit. If you restart the dock the usage has ceised. This has been fixed for the next released.

3. Docklets...

RocketDock does not support docklets right now. We are focusing on a more stable dock rather than craming as many features as possible in a first release.

Hmm, I can't seem to think of anything else right now. Any questions or comments are welcome. Hope people are enjoying it.

Thanks Skunkie, I'm liking your dock! Is it hardware accelerated like MobyDock was? That's the feature I want the most in any dock. An option to make it not always on top would be nice also.

#294470

RocketDock is using GDI+ it comes with WindowsXP and can be utalized as an addon dll in Windows2000. GDI+ is more compatable in Windows than making the dock hardware accelerated (using DirectX). MobyDock was a great peice of work. We were considering continuing the idea of having a dock using DirectX but the fact of the matter is DirectX is slow. As for the option to make the dock "Always on Bottom," will be implemented. We want to make sure all the current bugs are worked out before we add more options. But don't worry it is on our whiteboard written in huge black marker.

Hope you enjoy the dock. Please do send us any bug reports and other feature requests. They may not all be added right away, but we do plan on taking this dock much further than what you see.

i guess you weren't using DirectX correctly :D

What about smooth font?

#294564

It will get there. More settings for the font will be added in the next major update. We want to work out some more bugs before we add mroe features.

Menge, aren't you a barrel of joy :P

#294663

this is dock is way different from the rk's. this is only like the yzdock and mobydock. there is now scale effect on it and running apps display.

but this one is better than yzdock. this is very smoth.

memory usage is very high. 20,000+kb.

thanks a lot for this dock bro.

#294705

Umm, I am not a "bro" but a "sista" :P Just for future reference. ;)

RocketDock stores all it's icons in memory. if you are using large PNGs your memory usage will go up. Especially with many icons int eh dock.

I think with this report I will rework teh caching since it seems people do not take into consideration the larger the image files, the more memory that will be used. Of course this will also sacrafice speed. Will ahve to find a happy medium somewhere.

*too lazy to fix type-o's. i haven't slept yet..so bleh!*

#294831

Well skunkie, congratulations, this dock has a great potential. :D

I've been trying to replace object dock lately because :

1 : I hate stardock (like a lot of people) :P

2 : it's not a really "flexible" dock like was YZ Dock (rip) :slant:

I tried RK Launcher but I don't like it, I mean it's a good dock, but not for me.

I won't mention Moby dock, because I tried it for like half an hour and erased it.

I needed something like YZ Dock but without the annoying "getting out of full screen in a movie or a game because I moved the mouse over it (goddamnit)".

And surprise, Rocket Dock seems to be exactly the thing I was looking for.

Thank you a thousand times, "merci mille fois" as we say in FRANCE.
