[rant] Tiger

Well I finally got tiger installed on my system and I have to say this is the biggest piece of **** I have ever used. The thing is pretty as hell to look at and as long as you don't wnat to do anything productive, than you are in business.

Wiped the drive clean, and installed. oooohhhh how pretty I thought. Set up mail, no problem. Installed the apps I needed (adobe creative) no problem..Than the fun begins.

Adobe reader takes 7 minutes to load, not the first time, not the second time...EVERY TIME...ok, no big deal right? Well the whole damn creative suite doesn't function properly, the whole system crawls to a snails pace and I can get nothing done. Now keep in mind this is an 800mhz g4 ibook, im not expecting blazing speeds by any means whatsoever, but i used to at least be able to get done what I needed to get done on panther.

Indesign, sucks horsepoop on this os, the thing takes 4 minutes to open a blank document...it takes 5 minutes to save a document with one line of text in it. Exporting to PDF...forget it...i got tired of waiting and just force quit everything.

And before you people start, yes, Ive tried reinstalling everything, including the os, the creative suite, just indesign, 10.4.1 all of it. No, I have no third party hardware hooked up or installed.

Another great example is I just tried to scroll down in safari, spinning beach ball for 20 seconds...yes I do have many things open right now...mail, safari, ichat, dashboard, adium, itunes, cyberduck, indesign, reader, and photoshop...this did not happen on panther, at all.

I have to say my only consolation is that all of these things will be fixed in the next point release otherwise its back to panther for me.

Im pissed

EDIT look at my activity monitor...5gb in VM,,,,HAHAHAHA...yeah osx manages memory well

How long did you wait until you opened all these apps? Perhaps tiger is still indexing your drives for spotlight? that could explain the lag, but indexing shouldnt take more than 1hour (probably at lot less).

I have no problems opening indesign CS2 or anything else like that.

#290883

yeah, tiger was installed yesterday....and has been on since...so i know indexing is done...

#290884

Erm..... I don't know what to say. Tiger runs incredibly fast for all of CS2 on my Powerbook 550MHz and doesn't hog too much memory (have 768 RAM if that means anything).

#290888

The only complaints I have is that Spotlight slowed my system down a ton while it was indexing. It seems now I have to log out every so often, otherwise my system does start to creep. And being I am on a 56K, it seems to slow down Dashboard. And I miss the way the User name panel slides to the center ever so smoothly when you clicked it on the log in screen. Now its all jerky. Other than that, I'M LOVIN' IT!

P.S. Sorry for your misfortune.

#290896

Yeah - ducked up man.. :slant:

Ive had TIger for around 3 weeks to a month, CS2 and all that... and its faster than when i had it installed in panther  - Id call up tech support...

EDIT: and yeah, VM i dont get - I have 2 gigs of ram and OS allocates 10 gigs to Virtual Memory :o

#290925

I have 512mb of ram and OS allocates 5gb of VM, weird eh seph? You'd think that because you have more ram youd have less VM.

#290938

i thought there was a problem with some people's indexing hanging long after they thought it was done... there were solutions over at macNN i think if thats the prob.

#290943

i have seen lots of instances like this. best to buy a new computer with tiger than upgrade wtih tiger. makes things a lot simpler.

#290951

plusone for Indexing

Depending on how much RAM, what CPU and how many files you have, spotlight can take a while.

My mate has a 867Mhz Rev A 12" PB and everything works like a charm :slant:

#290990

well, like i said, just general stuff works just fine...another thing I found is that "ichatagent" likes to hang all the time. weeeee

Once I start getting into working, thats when everything goes to hell. as I said, this is an 800mhz g4 ibook with 640mb ram.

Im gonna play with it for a few more days and if it continues than I will have to go back to panther :-(

#291088

Well, things are getting better I have to say. Updated adobe reader....applied patches out the wazoo on most of my CS apps....don't use Ichat anymore...and everything else seems to be a little bit better.

Did have a crash today when I unplugged my power....not a crash so much as the whole thing just shut off, lol.

So im at least functioning a bit better and getting some work done.

As it looks, 10.4.2 is addressing most of the problems I have had and should be a decent point release.

time will tell

#291370

I must say i have experienced that ichatagent crash you talk of - everytime i log into ichat (i use it only to cam with my fiancee), which is seldom.... I guess i can live with it until its fixed...

#291371

that's why you need to buy a mac............................OH. that excuse dosen't work in this situation eh?

#291385

<<<>>

#291388

HAHAHA - trust me, even if ichatagent is (Not Responding), I get no slowdown or anything like it. I only know of this happening because im a freak and i keep checking how VM/Ram/DiskActivity works on different situations, I would not know of this otherwise ;)

#291389

maybe your cooler is not 100% working, then your cpu is going higher, and your computer become slower..

Oh you poor, misguided child

#292147

how evil unbe LOL

#292152

hey photo, i installed tiger on the same model ibook with 640mb ram and it ran like utter crap...

because what i didn't realize it till then was the HD was freakin dying

have you run smartreporter (freeware) or another 3rd-party utility to check the HD? (disk utility and hardware utility disk are fickle) http://homepage.mac.com/julianmayer/

the reason i mention this is that since installing 10.4.1 to my firewire external and running off that i find ALL my applications, from MS Office to PS CS (1) load-time and overall performance has increased dramatically.

ps... why do you run acrobat reader!? it's a dog, man. acrobat pro i can understand, but reader!?

pss... ordered a new 12" today... parting ways with my 16-month-old 800.

and... good luck, bud.

iChatAgent wouldn't effect performance, it'd only effect you trying to start a video chat.

#292218

Its still a pain in the ass, esXXI :P - I see no mention of performance loss in Photo's post :P

Do you face the same problem, btw? - havent heard anyone else except us two complain about it...

#292221

Well, my drive seems to be in good working order.....and things have been smoother....there seems to be two instances in which my computer gets bogged down...it is either Indesign....or Icchat....i went back to ichat a day ago...and was running indesign yesterday for the first time in a few days and everything was bogged down....so back to adium for now to see if I can isolate this problem.

#292296

After reading over this thread, I have a question:

Is there a way to disable Spotlight indexing? I wouldn't use Spotlight much (I'm very organized and wouldn't mind just browsing to the file), and if I do, I wouldn't mind waiting for it to search.

#292345

Yes, there are a couple of apps that turn Spotlight off altogether - there is really nothing wrong with indexing though, what puts you off about it?
