Since Linux is such a multi user system...
Ctrl Alt F1 through F6 are Consoles... Ctrl alt F7 through F12 are X session displays (meaning i can have more then 1 X server running.. having 2 users running in X but one is in gnome and one is in kde so you can switch back and fourth)
the default X server is on display 0 which is Ctrl alt F7... by pressing that will you bring back into the default X display

having Kde gnome Ice wm enlightenment all running but all different users hehehe its sorta neat.. it makes it easy if your logged in to your normal user but need root or some other account to do somthing so you dont have to log out...

Why dont you just open up a terminal? Console in GNOME, Konsole in KDE, xterm, rxvt,...... , It does everything opening up a real console will, and you can still run X easily.

aaah that subject is a weird one, on a friends computer an 800mhz ram dell something, a fresh xp install uses about 120 ram
On my p3 500 laptop a fresh install uses only 57-59 mb of ram upon a fresh boot. When not starting anything at start up. (i.e. going into msconfig and unchecking everything, (icq, messenger, etc, etc)
Loading all my aqua stuff (shell32's, y's shadow and OD) ram usage upon boot went upto 97 mb.
My friend was like how the hell does your XP boot with 57 mb ram usage and we never figured it out.
One thing I always do though is set my page file to 100-100 no matter what, (i dont photoshop) because I have 320 ram. But even before I changed the swapfile setting on a standard xp installation it still booted with 57 mb ram usage.
Weird how it uses different amount of base ram on booting up to the desktop, on different machines.
Yeah, Windows is unpredictable.
My page file is 900-900 on the first, seperate partition. Its the only way to go. Having the pagefile on the first, and seperate is MUCH faster. My system sped up like 15%.
mine uses like 300 mb...
im not sure why...
maybe since i have so much ram (1024 mb) it feels that it can use more...
but xp hasn't EVER crashed on me (except that time i installed a webcam that was only for use w/ win 95) but just uninstalled the webcam, and everything went back to normal
another reason might be that i have 5000 fonts on my computer...

im a little late on this.....
how do you open an x session in a console other than f7? i remember when i first started using linux reading about this, but i forgot how. it seems like you have to tell a config file that it is ok to use the other consoles.......

log in as a new user under any of the console user spots (F1-F6) then type
Startx -- :1
X always starts on display 0.. unless you tell it otehrwise so you gotta tell it to run on another display.. like 1... so then it will run undmer F8 and you can switch back and fourth

I am dual booting mandrake 9.1 with Windows XP. Linux is how I replace my system files on my windows partition with modified ones. That way I can avoid the whole WFP all together.

@skwid: i guess you are using fat32 for the xp partition??
becasue i didn't think that linux had the ability to write to ntfs yet
So maybe that's the reason I couldn't use knoppix to change my system files in xp... Is there a program that would allow linux to write to an ntfs drive?
go here for NTFS support on linux: http://linux-ntfs.sourceforge.net/ This is how i did it. To write to the drive you heve to set the permissions.
