My story!

lol i dunno what the hell i did.. windows is too fragile.. anyways.. i booted my computer up.. Lilo came up.. chose windows.. got the damn blue screen of death.. windows wouldnt boot anymore... but.. for some reason... i didnt care... i didnt freak out i just sat there looking at this ugly blue screen and went... "oh well"... booted up linux.. mounted the NTFS side.. copied my files over burnt them and i backed up windows.. and im reinstalling windows now... all i have to say is.. THANK GOD FOR LINUX.. lol

Linux is our saviour.

Windows can get messed up if your boot partition is very messy

It can be fixed, it happened to me and i had to get an IT technician to sort the mess out

well im happy i had linux on....and my burner working.. lol

id love to hear any other close call stories... its weird it was like linux gave me comfort when windows screwed up. i jsut didnt care.. so its installing right now sadly.. i need it for games.. lol

Well windows is installed.. lol my Lilo is gone.. sh## forgot about that

now im gunna have to reinstall lilo again.. now where did i put that linux boot disk?

Yeah, Linux saved my life too. So did having multiple partitions.

I suggest everybody here download a copy of KNOPPIX, and learn how to burn CDs in Linux. Its a bootable distro, perfect for recovery. Its saved my data loads of times. I can backup my important files before reinstalling.

Knoppix is also a great introduction to Linux. Its got a 2GB Linux distro (debian) on a cd. So you can try Linux out, without messing up Windows. Check it out, get saved.

yea i checked out Knoppix and was VERY impressed with how it detected all my hardware and configured my internet connection without touching anything .. for a live cd.. its great for new guys!

i sugest TAHA to try that out since he cant get his partitions workin out!!!

Dammit!!! I lost my BIOS password!!

Is there anyway else to boot from a CD without going into BIOS?? PLEASE??

lol you lost your bios password.. well if you want.. you can reset your bios by tkaing out the bios battery from the mother board then putting it back on.. thugh it'll reset bios to default settings if you ever changed anything in tehre afterwards.. but password will be whiped...

but sualy you should be able to boot off cd without telling bios to put cd as first boot device... well every computer is different!

Why not? All it'll do is Reset your clock. Theres NO danger in it. If you dont know the password, you couldnt have changed anything anyway. Your computer was working when it was sent to you, so the defaults cant hurt your system.

Make sure you leave the battery out for over 10 minutes though, otherwise it wont reset.

Lol something similar to this happened to me once.. I had just got war3 beta.. I installed and updated my video card and wham, my Windows XP crashed.. every time it would freeze before booting up to the login screen.. So i simply started fdisk and removed the ntfs partition and fixed my LILO config.. Downloaded Wine, and played old school warcraft II BNE with no problems.. Till this day i havnt needed Windows, and im pretty sure i wont. =)

woah, you dont need to tkae your battery out. if its on your desktop pc, then there should be a jumper on your mobo that you remove, boot up with it off, and it will clear your bios password. after its cleared, shut off your pc, and put the jumper back on. the jumper might be labeled, i dunno if it will be labeled or not.

I wanted to ask a question to you linux users, I eventually use red hat 8, but the browers I've tried seems to draw the fonts really jagged and its quite difficult to read them. I've tried Opera, Mozilla and Konqueror (this is the most readable one, but not at all). So: it's a graphic card problem or it's all about the browser? In this case, which browser do you use?

can you show us a screenshot of how jaggy.. because i have anti aliased fonts on my linux.. they look great.. but before that they were jaggy but not to the point to unreadable.... so try and get a screeny

Evrytime I read posts like this it strikes me as odd,

do I have the only copy of XP that somehow works magic?

It crashed twice on me in a whole year, I think thats weird,.. so many people say XP crashes, I guess im just luckkky.

You have to build the browser with Anti Aliasing on. Each browser has different flags, read the install notes. Yeah I know, its annoying, but in Linux, the browsers fonts are seperate from the rest of the system.

Three Drives.. i understand where your coming from... Xp is a nice OS...i havnt had the WHOLE OS crash on me in a lonnngg time.... but its the fact how stable everything else runs.. IE is a PAIN in the ass freezes and crashes all IE and explorer windows taking explorer with it... stability of drivers and other sh## like that losing work is just a pain.. thats what gets me about windows... its not about the whole OS crashing as that has changed in the new versions of windows.. but the fact of applications running...

Yeah, windows isnt really "unstable" in the classic Windows98 sense, but when compared to Linux NEVER EVER crashing, its horrible. Everything in Windows is integrated, so the whole system is capable of crashing. Linux/BSD has the Graphical server seperate, so if it does crash, you can just restart it from a Command line, AND you wont lose a single bit of data (b/c only the X Server crashed, not any of your programs).

But XP has only crashed on me twice in a year and a half. So thats not that bad. It sloooows down a lot though, and it uses sooo much RAM/Page.

Windows w/o any extra programs running: 180MB RAM, 100MB Page

Linux w/ GNOME and a bunch of stuff: 55MB RAM, 0MB Page

BSD w/ GNOME and a bunch of stuff: 40MB RAM 0MB Page

Its cool to make fun of Windows.

XP is fine. It's linux that is screwing up the Windows partitions causing the OS to become corrupted. I know this for a fact because it happened all the time to me. XP isnt too fragile, linux is just a pain in the ass when trying to get it to 'play well with others'. Thats why, if you really feel the need to run linux, you should run windows and linux on separate computers. Or at least completely different drives that linux isnt accessing.

for me thats never been true, xp crashed 2 or 3 times a day without linux, now with linux it never does.

Probably something to do with reinstalling windows to install linux, but my point is still there, for me linux + xp are a solid combination.

im not exactly sure what your talking about binary.. i have no problems with linux working with windows.. iv had linux on my harddrive with windows for years and years now and no problems at all.. they dont hurt each other at all and configuring linux is easy now.

I, myself, am a recent switcher to Linux - other than OS X .

I am very much impressed by its stability in comparision to XP. In XP, it is an expected thing that the OS will halt for a few seconds or IE will crash, or a Word document will suddenly quit.

Now I'm glad I have the best of both worlds, Macs and PC's. In Macs, there's OS X and in PC's there's Linux. Love'em both to death

By the way, Contra or Bo or anyone, when I press ctr+alt+F2 to go to console mode, how do I switch back? Is there any shortcut? Is there anything to type?
