Adobe buys macromedia!

Can't believe it! Not really sure if this is a good thing or not, but it's happened anyway.

hmmm... lets see where this goes :)

#274686

ok now thats ****ed up. Talk about eliminating the competition for a monopoly, now what will compete with adobe? corel? pfft :P When i read the topic title I seriously thought it was a joke.

Though I have always dreamed of a bastard child of fireworks withs its awsome vector capabilities and photoshop with its amazing raster work.

#274687

Whoa ! Eliminating the only serious competition once and for all !

Whatever is going to happen to the Macromedia Studio MX Suite ? Are we all gonna switch to GoLive for good ?!!!

Edit : Hope they won't be bought out by EA

#274693

kickass! omg, this is like the coolest thing i have ever seen! adobe has no competition, not only that, but think! all the programs will be integrated! *thinks of "adobe dreamweaver" and "adobe flash"*

i always found it ironic that adobe used flash a lot on their website. even if it is the only thing like it, its competition, but now...man. its going to be really cool.

This is just great! However, I am not so happy for some of the folks at their divisions (Can't have GoLive and Dreamweaver, same for some of the Fireworks, ImageReady people), but only good things for us users can come from an union like this.

#274740

Mr Ludge you were faster than AP in reporting this news. I think you have a new job waiting for you. ;)

#274746

who is AP?

#274749

AP: Associated Press

AFP: Agence France Press

TASS: (Former soviet press agency)

Another throwback for diversity, IMHO. If we continue losing software house flagships at that pace, we'll end up in a monopoly about 2050.

Think again... with Adobe buying Macromedia, their prices will probably increase. CS2 is expensive enough as it is... now they'll prolly toss Flash and Dreamweaver into the CS bundle and charge even more.

but you will always be able to buy the software individually. sure, the cs-mx bundle will go up because of new programs, but you can buy the ones you want individually. not to mention, it would be cheaper to buy (i bet) the new cs-mx bundle (which would include the mx suite) than buying the cs and mx seperately. no doubt in my mind is this a bad idea. sure, adobe may now have a monopoly in design, but think of how this could benefit everyone. i could be wrong. im just stating what i think.

Well, honestly it's the monopoly thing that worries me. Slowly Adobe seems to be becoming the Microsoft of the design world. (Well... given time, I'm sure Microsoft will try to become the Microsoft of the design world, but that's beside the point, hehe.) You do have a point, however... and Adobe could possibly dump GoLive in favor of Dreamweaver (god I hope so).. so the price might still be reasonable. I wonder what they'll do with ColdFusion... that doesn't seem like an Adobe thing to me.

Agreeing. who will take the role as the counterweight? corel? (don't think so) competition pushes evolution forward...

#274773

My thoughts exactly. Corel can't compete with Adobe... in fact, the only other company that I thought *could* compete with Adobe was Macromedia. (Which is probably one of the reasons they bought them in the first place.)

#274775

It kind of worries me too, the price going up. But I think what Adobe (and hope) will do is that they will dump like programs (the worse of the two) and end up with a better CS. It seems the best way to go. You don't need Fireworks and Photoshop. Let's just be frank here. I think Fireworks will be lost. GoLive (I hope as well) will be lost to Dreamweaver. Flash will work hand in hand with Illustrator (and possibly take place if not again partner up nicely with ImageReady). I think Adobe as well as its consumers will benefit from this. I can't wait to see how Adobe integrates everything together. You know it will happen. You now have "smart objects" for Photoshop, and now, think, you can copy something from Flash and paste it over to Photoshop, in vector form. How cool can that be?! For designers, this will help us from doing silly and pointless conversions and losing color and all sorts of things to get one image or design to another program. Seamless integration. It's what I hope Adobe will do. No doubt in my mind the price will go up for the suite, but think of what much more it will have. I think the benefits outrun the downsides.

I´m surprised nobody mentioned how this will affect Apple itself.

Adobe now has the monopoly of all 2d/web/print software market, the Apple´s bussiness core. and lately the relation between Apple / Adobe weren´t the best due to some common interests (pdf´s royalties, adobe not developind video software on Apple systems etc). Of course in the end money will talk higher... but it´s still interesting to think about all this implications.

#274780

looking forward to adobe cs3mx goooogggaaaaaa,,,,,,lol

#274783

Now previous macromedia products can have matching adobe style icons. :D That may take some of the fun out of icon making though.

#274791

Yay, just eat the competition. :/

Although this may provide some great products, there really is NO competition now. Adobe owns the web. Adobe owns graphics.

Other than that I'm also looking forward to see if any new products will live up to expectations.

#274835

Hmm, I suppose this is both good and bad news.

Good news because now they have control of the market and all the apps will work together.

Bad news because Adobe's apps are horribly ugly to look at and they're not made to be user friendly (compare any Apple apps to their Adobe counterpart and you'll see what I mean).

#274846

Like others have said, I'm most worried about price. Especially b/c I was considering buying DW MX v2...I sincerely hope they don't up the price.

Ah well, interesting to see where this goes.

Adobe apps? Ugly?

I think you mean Macromedia's apps...

Adobe make both versions look OS Xish (notice how they use the mac os x file icon for thier file types?)

But Macromedia make it look sort of Lunaish... (Just the style of all the icons look that colourful, ugly luna style)

So in what way do you think that the adobe apps are ugly to look at?

Also, I think this will be good because adobe will probably mix the two programs together. (Like freehand and Illustratr into one app, probably still called illustrator)

I'm going to switch to linux... o_O

I found it so interesting that Adobe's stock went down a few dollars today, and Macromedia's went up. I never understood why the aquisitor's stock goes down and the one they aquire goes up. I just don't get it. (Don't bother explaining, I already got it from my history teacher, and I still don't get why it isn't the other way around.)

#274875

I JUST HOPE ADOBE APPS WONT START HAVING THAT GAYED MACROMEDIA lNTERFACES...

#274877

Alright look:

Apple

Also note how much more simple and user friendly the Apple apps are.
