Just when you though windows couldnt get uglier...

I wont get into too much details, but I installed Windows Longhorn today, and overall I was quite amazed by how not-very ugly the windows and the taskbar looked, but when I saw that new Internet Explorer icon I almost **** myself, IT IS BYFAR THE WORST ICON I HAVE EVER SEEN ITS SIMPLY PATHETIC!, not that all of the other icons arent.. :| dont believe me? take a look_

Yeah, that's pretty darn crappy.

I still think all of Windows (be it XP or Longhorn) looks like poop on a stick when put next to Mac OS X. Especially that sexy, sexy Panther...

yeah, panther is awesome, but i rather like the tiger too (beta, not final, final looks like shiet)

#249409

Well remember that Longhorn is still a beta, those surely aren't finalized icons. Also, OS X kinda has to look better than XP, seeing as Apple is trying to get people to pay atleast $500 to switch to it, it must be better in every way.

#249414

Is "Longhorn" available to the public?

#249417

no, it's not

#249424

So, this guy must work with Stevie, right? Or some similar company. I mean, obviously...how else would he have gotten a copy of Longhorn?

#249425

currently its avalible only to developers and beta testers

true, those arent the final ones, that final style, the aero one, is simply beautiful, mr. gates showed longhorn off in july w/ that final aero style, but this is the only style avalible to developers and testers for now... this slate and jade///

offtopic* - i heard some rumors about the final version of longhorn that its gonna need like a min 3ghz cpu and 1gig ram + 128 meg vc to run at max settings/// i dont quite believe that cause i dont think too much people would wanna spend like a 1000$ if not more on just the hardware for longhorn....

#249429

is it just me or do the icons in longhorn look like glossed up xp icons being displayed under 16bit color

#249432

is it just me or do the icons in longhorn look like glossed up xp icons being displayed under 16bit color

no, its not you, but the color is 32, it just looks so ****y cause mspaint still saves jpg files w/ the lowest quality, and i couldnt get photoshop to run... anyways even if i would i wouldnt be able to use it.. way too laggy

#249437

i think it looks aqua-ey? :)

#249441

O GOD MY EYES!! IT BURNS!!! TAKE IT AWAY!!

that IE icon is so incredibly ugly :/

#249443

That is a very old build of Longhorn. Longhorn is currently upto build 4083. Witch is the same as 4074 accept it has 64 bit cpu support. The Visual Style In builds 4074 and 4083 are WAY better than your slate there bub. Jade is what Longhorn Inspiriat is "inspired" from. ;)

You should've saved it as a png. Oh well some people never learn. :slant:

#249474

was that a joke?!

:]

#249480

it was meant to be funny yes... but the point was quite serious. M$ are behind the times when it comes to their OS, they always have been. just look at past history... in 1988 apple had system 6 followed by system 7, it took M$ untill 1995 to match this with Windows 95 - its happening again, apple had OSX in 1999/2000 its gonna be 2006 before longhorn starts to emerge and even then it wont be completed until 2008 (WinFS) so although it was meant to be funny i was being quite serious.

its not a wonder ive heard people say 'LongHorn' should be renamed to 'LongWait'

on another note... are you aware that longhorn will carry 60-65% of XP's code ? in the years M$ are giving themself to get this OS and out with the resource M$ have at their disposal surely they could have started from scratch and atleast matched, possibly even surpassed Apple by 2008 when they are currently planning to have all three 'revolotionary' components of longwait finished.

OK.. I found a site that has some screenshots of the latest build of Longhorn..

LinK

Edit: Even a better site with a lot of screenshots.. looks nice LinK

Starting from scratch is the worst thing you can do when building software. Also, more resources doesn't mean you can assign more and more resources to one project: a project is always limited in the number of resources it can use, if you go over that limit, you will actually slow the project more down.

#249502

without wanting to sound to negative, that isnt the latest build - look at the date, since then we've had the above mentioned 4074 which i myself have tried. I can assure you that current leaked builds do not carry the Luna theme by default, and while some features are nice to play with... any extended use and the memory leaks force a restart.

@Ave i realise what your saying but were talking about 6-7 years, surely appropriate resource managment could get the job done. And when i say to start from scratch i merely meant thats the only way they will ever keep up with OSX, keeping within the constraints of what we currently know as Windows will always leave them years behind the competition as the only way apple got ahead was to 'Think Different'.

If you are talking in terms of developers [as resources], then more developers don't get the job done earlier.

OSX didn't start from scratch: they grabbed an UNIX build (darwin + mach kernel if I am correct) and adjusted it.

Also, it's OSX that is years behind Windows:

market-share Windows: 97%

market-share OSX: under 1%

No matter how much new technologies you have, in business it's all about profit and market-share.

#249508

your right, but no one here is talking about profit and market-share. it is the operation system we are discussing, not company marketing strategies, however you look at it OSX as far of operation systems go is far superior. i also never said apple started from scratch with OSX, i simple said they thought different, meaning they left their prior OS behind in favour of a much more powerful alternative. mayb thats what M$ need to do, either way im certain the day will come where M$ decide the base 'Windows' code has reached its limits and they will need to 'Think Different' themself.

Just wondering, exactly what makes you think Windows code has reached it limits, besides the GUI?

#249585

To answer Wizards question... Longhorn is available to anyone willing to pay for an MSDN subscription, so yes... it's publicly available.

Also, Longhorn isn't even a Beta yet, so the GUI will most definately be changing.

Remember, they are working on the code in the background... the GUI is probably not high on the priority list at this time. Most of what you are seeing was created to test functionality.

The occasional theme or piece of eye candy I'm sure was done for PR sake.

@theunknown

Saying OS X is "far superior", is a bit of a stretch.

Yes... it has it's advantages, but "far superior". Not really.

And the "the base 'Windows' code" as you call it has already been replaced.

It went the way of the trash bin when "Me" died it's ungraceful and very painful death.

Everything is now completely based off of the NT kernel, which was created in 1990/91.

BSD and it's Mach kernel was created in the mid to late 80's. I don't recall the exact year off the top of my head, but it's been around forever.

The GUI is a matter of personal preference. One mans trash is another mans treasure.

I like to blend features from both. I like the task/startbar at the top, but I like the close/min/max buttons on the right... I'm right handed so why should I have to cross completely over a window to close it.

I like my desktop icons on the right as well.. makes sense to me anyway.

I could go on about other features, but you get my point.

That's part of why I joined A-S... I like most of the GUI features of OS X, but some of it I don't really care for.

Again... personal preference.

A few points from me too:

  • Windows can't do from scratch. It has to be invisibly compatible to maintain its market share. It already carries a huge database of hacks and patches to make well established third party software run on newer versions which almost alone allows the extensibility and evolveability of itself.
  • Windows users can't be bothered with carbonized contra classic apps: they will always want the real deal: run their apps of today seamlessly within tomorrows Windows.
  • The GUI of OSX is superior because Apple could and would bury third party apps in a sorry classic emulator alive. A move which MS can't make for fear of getting the sh*t beaten out of it by the Oracle and SAP users of this planet.
  • Mark my word that MS will come out with a fully DirectX'ed desktop, genie effects en masse and whatnot - classic 2D apps will still run in a carefully emulated and patched, even antialiased fashion, if not with LH then later; no more WindowFX slideshows, thank you all the same.
