Opinions Needed On AveDesk

a- automount of USB/firewire drives, etc (but I think you're working on that already)

b- If I leave Avedesk running for a few days on end, it starts to generate a lot of page faults (let's say ~4 days running = nearly 1 billion page faults) and starts to take up RAM as well. This is fixed by a simple exit and restart, so whatever. No big deal.

c- beautiful GIANT png shortcuts to folders, drives, etc, FTP desklets, Icon conversion desklet, systats system monitoring

d- small footprint (as long as it's not running for days on end), *very* configurable.

e- option to either autosave config changes or save changes as another file

- the way all the desklets freak out and blink rapidly whenever I open WinDVD player and/or other media player type apps

- perhaps a prettier control panel?

- To be able to hold-click on a Avedesk shortcut and (similar to Objectdock) have an explorer-like browse-able listing of all folders and subfolders, etc.

a) I would love to see AveDesk have the ability to move the drive desklets up on a line when a drive is not mounted (like many others )

Saving. Maybe there could be a "Save Configuration" option in the tray icon? Auto-Save would be cool if multiple themes were supported (I think you have that down though).

c) I use it for drives. I use it every once in a while for AveTunes, but the Konfabulator Mini iTunes Remote draws me away from time to time...

d) Low memory usage!!! The drives desklets are absolutely awesome with the sublabels!

e) A way to bypass iTunes Scripting would be cool, but this is a desklet problem (not the core program).

Very light on my system resources. Even worked ok on my former k6-2 450 mhz!

1.live previews...when resizeing the pngs or adjust the transparency...have slider bars instead of the up and down arrow.

2.is it also possible to have the osx effect when you click on the icon? (like it will have a little zoom in animation to open and close the folder it wil zoom out back to the desktop icon.)

3. avetunes works with winamp/foobar/WM player

Tooltips . So that when u hover say on the mount Desklet its popups a tooltip with More info abt the drive. Also on like the weather widget.

I hate the fact that when i ever change something in desklet properties , the apply button is still grayed out and o have to switch tabs and change the seetings of label visiblity and then i can click on apply.

Stability . Low memory foot prints , i have like 4 Drive desklets and it takes only abt 1 meg . Highly Customizable , Simplicty . Good and high Quality Content for it (I mean the skins and stuff)

a) when a desklet is set to be desktop icon, it should be considered as a real desktop icon. I mean when I set a desklet as desktop icon, sometimes another "real" desktop icon will be put behind the desklet, it's really annoying...

c) for me, the main usage of Avedesk is :

shortcuts for drives, sysstats, avetunes

d) avedesk is definitely the best out there (IMO), it uses less resources than others widget app, highly customizable.

I'm trying to collect some opinions/ideas about (future versions) of AveDesk. If you are an AveDesk user, please give me a minute of your time and answer the following questions:

Please try to be informative, comments like "it simply rocks" or "it sucks donkeyballs" don't really help me.

For example, one thing that has been bugging (question me in AveDesk is the About... item in the trayicon rightclick menu, I always accidently clicked on it.

a - The expose like feature to be intergrated and less choppy. 100% smooth/option for it to be instant, no animation.

b- It crashes when im 'cheat skippin' in iTunes. eg, I'm contiunelly clicking to the last 1 second of a track in intunes to increase my playcount. Eventually avedesk crashed.

c - Widgets. By far. I dont use the desktop icon thing. It does widgets pretty well. Very well in fact.

d - Its customisation of widgets is extensive in the dialouge box.

a) Faster startup times, better shell integration (yes, I'm aware of AveShell-- I mean that it would be nice if AD shortcuts could show up in Open/Save windows, etc)

No Auto-save. I'm sure there's more, but I can't think of it now-- I'll contact you if you really wanna hear it.

c) Desktop shortcuts-- it would be great if I could get all normal desktop icons to show up as AD widgets smoothly, speedily, and nicely

a) Mass label editing(able to set different global label settings that will change all set labels) maybe being able to set desklets above desklets set as desktop icons so you can put desklets over other desklets(like an overley desklet?).. multiple images for drive desklet(medium loaded, medium not loaded(incase you don't want to hide the drive))

Sometimes all desklets wont load or desklets dissapear during restart..

c) Drive/Folder Shorcuts and, mbm/calender/weather display and notes

d) easy to customize and use, also clean png display

Ok, here is my few cents for a better AveDesk :cool:

A) Auto converting of existing and new desktop shortcuts to AveDesk shortcuts

I find the following scenario as the most annoying bit of AveDesk: you create a theme/add a new desklet/just change something, reboot you PC and oops, all your changes are gone. The lack of auto save setting is the most annoying thing in my opinion

C Desktop replacement, I use it to display all sorts of info as weather, calendar, notes, and HD info on my desktop. While of course keeping a simple eye candy desktop.

D) I think the best aspect of AveDesk is the fact that AveDesk is a great piece of software, and still its free to use. Also the suprerior quality of the desklets available to it.

E) Anything else? Yes in fact, one more change I'll like to see and a couple more rants.

Firstly, I would really like to see more friendly and intuative control panel, as it is kinda frustrating to get started with AveDesk and/or to add and configure existing desklets.

Then I'd be glad if it was easier to create desklets for AveDesk, and if AveDesk wasn't dependent on additional software as SysStats, as that can make stuff pretty frustrating when you are trying to get every thing work together.

1) I'd really like to see an integrated AveFocus. The effect is really really really cool. On top of that, the ability to configure which key AveFocus responds to.

2) Better support for USB removable drives. I have a flash drive that doesn't really work quite right with AveDesk (it doesn't update like a regular drive does) as well as a USB external HD which I can't stop to unplug if I have a drive desklet mounted to one of the partitions.

( Not a whole bunch! I've gotta say that I'm really impressed with AveDesk! I've only had it crash a few times. I don't use all the fancy effects that much, but that's since I ususally only have my mouse over an icon for a second while I'm clicking on it.

(D) The ability to show the drive usage right on the desktop in a clean, efficient manner. That added to AveFocus makes AveDesk a big hitter in my books.

(E) I wish I could hug you!

OMG I forgot to tell about what I hate... here it is:

I hate the button "Save...xxxx" whether its configuration or sys-Stat or whatever it should be avoided! Windows has already provided standard buttons "OK" "Cancel" and "Apply" I think they are there for a reason right? Why not follow the same concept?

Basically a configuration should be saved when "OK" or "Apply" button is pressed! (anywhere in AveDesk including sys.Stat)

a) an advanced picture slide show: I know that one exists(DTP) in sysstats format, but I think that one is too primitive. a viewer that resizes both pictures and frames, and an option to align to each corner or top/bottom/left side/right side of screen when resizing. option to show images in subfolders would be nice too.

I use litestep, and whenever I double click a folder or disk desklet, an error message pops up saying "D:... The system cannot find the device specified".

c) I use avedesk for monitering disk usage, using disklets or folderlets. I also use a clock and DTP which are for sysstats.

d) Low memory usage, and doesn't require much system resources and performance.

e) Better compatibility for litestep?

a) an OD/RK/YZ docklet to control AD: It would be great to configure desklets, launch them (eg. notes), like dashboard does, maybe displaying a tabbed pane...

(I really hate having too many icons in the systray...) As AD is able to use OD docklets, I suppose such a docklet would also be funny as a desklet...

The lack of autosave config issue...

c) System monitoring (sysstats) and shortcuts to drives and folders

d) Flexibility: you can place in desktop almost everything you can imagine

a) An integrated AveFocus with customizable backgrounds and selecting opactity/transparency of both the wallpaper and visible desklets.

a more fluid AveDesk. In comparing AveDesk to other widget systems like Konfabulator, konfabulator widgets and motion seem really "smooth" in comparison to Avedesk widgets which don't fade in/out etc. A good example of this is for example, clicking on a button in an iTunes widget. clicking on the button in AveDesk would not show you the button being pressed, but in Konfabulator, you can feel the buttons being pressed (they have more animation/rollover effects). Fixing this would make AveDesk perfect.

c) Creating shortcuts for drives and folders.

d) i haven't installed avedesk or any other widget program since reformatting (waiting for the next avedesk) but from what i remember, it was the resource usage. i dont think it was that much.

e) a whole bunch of interesting suggestiong:

- when creating a link to a CD drive, having an "eject" feature (right click on it or have an option on the right click menu, etc. doing this would eject the computer's CD tray)

- PLEASE try to keep system resource usage as low as possible. i stopped using konfabulator because of this. please try to keep it low

- a better drag option. it would be a pain in the butt trying to drag an icon while it had the "align to grid" on

- maybe have two packages when releasing avedesk. one without any extra widgets, and one with some like the "tiger search/spotlight" widget, etc.

other than that, it's great the video you made looked VERY promising

maybe this is a widget thing, but id like to see it create icons automatically as u mount/unmount drives without the user having to config it(maybe just set default icons and style and it creates things automatically)

I also though a shell extension would be nice to work this feature, so you can right click somethin and hit "create ave shortcut" and the config screen auto pops up
