Opinions Needed On AveDesk

I'm trying to collect some opinions/ideas about (future versions) of AveDesk. If you are an AveDesk user, please give me a minute of your time and answer the following questions:

  • a) What is one thing you really want to see in future versions of AveDesk?
  • B) What is the main thing irritating you in AveDesk?
  • c) What is your main usage of AveDesk?
  • d) What do you think is the best aspect of AveDesk?
  • e) Anything else....

Please try to be informative, comments like "it simply rocks" or "it sucks donkeyballs" don't really help me.

For example, one thing that has been bugging (question B) me in AveDesk is the About... item in the trayicon rightclick menu, I always accidently clicked on it.

I forget what was said on the 1.2 progress, so excuse all dupes (I am lazy :P )

A) Align Icons. Maybe have a selection to which axis is the default (left, right, top, bottom, et cetera) on to align them

B) No auto saving settings and sys tray icon shows up weird ;)

C) Icons for drives and Home folder and Icon Drop

D) Able to use large PNGs with transparency!!!

E) I have this irritating rash.. oh, on AveDesk?

I kinda wish that the AD Control Panel looked nicer. I would like to say more OS X like.

#243307

always glad to help out ave.

a) I would love to see avedesk take over my desktop in terms of folders and shortcuts. say u unzip something to the desktop. i would like it if the folder was an avedesk item so it would match the labels of my drives and such.

B) One issue i have with avedesk is that u have to save your configureation. and sometimes my system freezes and i have to do a hard restart and it forgot everything i did. maybe an auto save would fix that.

c) i use avedesk for drives on my desktop( hardrive, ipod, dvd, cdr). i like the auto mount for cd's but i wish that when it removes an unmounted drive the drives under it would automaticly move up, so i dont have a gap inbetween shorcuts.

d) That its relitivly easy to use. and configure. and that its still indevelopment :)

e) thats about it.... IT SIMPLY ROCKS :P. serioulsy im glad your back ave. hope this helps ;)

#243308

* a) A battery desklet that displays the information only when the battery is running and no label when is Ac hooked.

* B) The Cd size is not ccurate with all sessions, it read only the last one. Probably is not Avedesk but the desklet.

* c) Folders and Drives information (size, etc)

* d) Png look great, it is free, and the developer seems to enjoy as much as we do

* e) You are already in the history book of emulation, congrats!

#243309

My 2 cents...

a. Option to hide/show desktop icons.

b. What wizard said: no auto saving.

c. iTunes and sometimes icons for folders.

d. Free and easy.

Good luck!

[A.] i want to see Avedesk eventually take over my shell and replace explorer.exe Its seems like it is currently going in this direction. Something else that I want to see is an "explorer" docklet. Say like a finder on the mac, except its in Avedesk and will never close. That would be pretty cool, but not sure if it will ever happen. It will go in hand with AveShell being developed now. *Idea* if that is done, msstyles and windowblinds will become old news and the shell will be completely customizable. No limits. "drifts off into daydreaming"

[b.] the lack of auto configuration saving, and the way all the desklets freak out and blink rapidly whenever I open WinDVD player.

[C.] I use it for everything I can use it for. Its more sole icons for drives and shortcuts. I also have some widgets here and there, like the itunes and postits..etc.

[D.] I love the almost limitless functionality of it. I was thinking a while ago it would be great if someone developed a shell widget for AveDesk, and what do you know, I see AveShell coming along. The fact that anyone, even people like me, can contribute to the production of this application makes it great.

[E.] I just want to motivate you to continute the great work you and all the others helping the AveDesk project. Great work guys!

i apologize that [a] is a bit long.

a) Right-click settings grouped as a sub-menu either as an option or by default (like WinRAR can do). I prefer for Properties to always be the bottom option in my right-click menus, but AveDesk now appears at the bottom

B) Avetunes does not respond to multimedia keyboards when itunes is minimized. iTunes when shown, responds to the keys I have set on my keyboard to advance to the next song or go to the previous song. However when iTunes is minimized it does not respond to the multimedia keys. I would love to see AveTunes grab the multimedia functions and then send it to the minimized iTunes. I hate having to have iTunes showing for my keys to work.

d) The unbelievable amount of customization options

e) I'm sure it's already been worked on and I know I mentioned it to Brian (AveShell), but the AveDesk 1.1 icon is very messed up and from what I heard from a tester was in 1.2. I've uploaded a screenshot of the icon group to show you just in case. SCREENSHOT. There are two icons included that are 16.8M colors. While this is the amount of colors displayed at 32bit depth, they are not considered 32bit icons in IconWorkshop. The icon I circled in Red is being accessed for the system tray, when instead the 16x16 XP version should be. Also the 128x128 icon above it is messed up as you can tell in the screenshot. If this has not already been fixed send a 128x128px PNG and I'll re-create the icon group for you.

#243312

a) Align icons, that would really really rock!

B) No auto-saving, like many others think.

c) Drives, Folders and Weather.

d) Easy to use. Stabile.

e) I missing a desklet/AveTunes option, that will check folders for picture files, if there is no AlbumArt in the MP3 file id3 tag. :D

#243314

a) complete desktop and system wide integration

B) some dificultys in custimizing the desklet

c) for mac like icons and drives on my desk, and avetunes

d) stable, and amazing graphic capabilitys

e) much more animation in the entire desklet catagorys

hope this helps

#243315

  • a) One thing i would like to be able to add desklets and configure settings without always opeing the Avedesk Control Panel. Hopefully it can be a menu when i right-click on the systray icon like "Add Desklet, Settings, etc."
  • B) An irritating thing for me is that it seems a bit confusing.. For example, there's 'Properties' then 'Default Properties Dialog' then 'Default Desklet Properties'... Maybe the menus can be a bit more simpler or maybe clearer...
  • c) Main usage is the Shortcuts, Sysstats, Avetunes... Makes my desktop look cool...;)

  • d) The best aspect like other said is the crazy customizing options. Also another best aspect is the wicked coding in the program which makes it really light and fast..
  • e) Also, there are not many "desklets" for Avedesk. I would love to create desklets for Avedesk but I'm so overwelmed with all the coding, SDKs, etc. that I eventually give up... Hopefully you can create some way where we can create desklets much easier...

Hopefully i make sense with everything... lol..

#243317

A) Resizing avetunes for larger/smaller resolutions, i cant read it.

B) Single click activation without locking items.

C) Album art, avetunes.

D) Fast, responsive, and low footprint.

E) I hope 1.2 makes things more lively in the avedesk forum once its released. I miss seeing all the new things.

#243322

a) a graphical editor, like samurize. (i guess that's more of a sysstats thing. sometimes it's hard for me to separate the two!)

B) same as a. it's irritating when i want to customize something and can't do it graphically.

c) avetunes, ftp (and avetext!!)

d) light on resources. easy to use. tastes great. less filling.

e) eh, i'm just a dumb user. you tell me what i want! (okay, album art. draggable on-the-fly resizing.) i really like what i've seen in v1.2. that combined with sysstats v2.5 will be killer!!

#243328

okay, here you get one minute of my precious time (may i 'm goin to repeat some statements from above, but it's really too early for reading everything. sorry guys ;) )

a) another way to align desklets on the desktop (not by changing x/y values) and a possibilty to mark & move more than one desklet

B) (maybe it's my own stupidity) but i always have probs with sysstat when i restart the system. is it possible to handle sysstat like an equal desklet, which means the folder is called sysstat (instead of docklets)? the problem is that he tells me that he can't find sysstat.dll in folder xy, although the dll is evidently in folder xy *grrrrrr* (startin to get angry so early.....)

c) avetunes, folders, notes (especially on work) and sysstat

d) together with objectdock, it totally replaced my boring & tiring win xp desktop

e) anything else... *hmmmmm* well, ave, you did a very very great job, so just keep rocking dude

#243331

a) Auto mount drives (i.e. I have 3 CD drives, if I have 2 disks just below my hard drives - I take one out and the second one jumps to below my hard drive... if that makes sense?)

failing that - something that will take over my entire desktop and replace all icons with nice big pngs with info and labels :)

B) the saving - so many times I have restarted only to see that I forgot to save the config.

c) as a explorer desktop replacement

d) the stability and cusomisation capabilities (linked with sysstats its almost endless)

e) happy new year and thanks for your amazing work :)

#243334

a) systemwide and better desktop integration - such as right click context menu entries for "add desklet", automatic creation of shortcut or folder desklets when a program installs one on the desktop (maybe even a shell replacement- heard of aveshell recently) etc..and of course AveFocus aka ShowCase!!

B) like everyone else, no auto-save. the control panel can be clearer too in terms of the menu options.

c) FOR EVERYTHING! weather, itunes, clock, calendar, shortcuts and folders... in short, I have about 17 desklets running right now!!

d) has wide customization options (dropped konfabulator because of limited config), great developers and community, is free and looks pretty on my desktop! :) Oh, and also, it's very lightweight- 17 desklets consuming around 4.5mb of RAM. Now, that's not gonna happen with konfab...

e) I simply love this app! I will be looking out for 1.2. Thanks ave!

#243335

I'd like the program to be light and non-resource intensive.

Also, I recall that if Explorer crashes while using Avedesk, the desklets all disappear, but the program remains running. If there's a workaround, I'd like to see it implemented in 1.2.

#243338

what i would like to see:

- way to hide/show icons

- avetunes, well make it compatible with other media players such as Foobar2000 and Winamp

thats pretty much it. on the other hand, this is the nest program out :) thanks alot AndreasV

#243340

a)

Selecting all desklets and moving them.

Auto saving option would be great.

Align to Grid.

B) -

c) Informative-Eyecandy shortcuts to Drives, Folders and SysStats Weather.

#243345

What I would really like would be some kind of desktop context menu extension for switching

config files. For instance, you have 5 config files in the avedesk folder, and you right click on

the desktop > config > choose your config.

Another thing that bugs me is that the folder drive and shortcut desklets dont open there targets

as fast as a regular shortcut. I understand that this is probably hard to fix, but it would

be really cool. If I click the my documents icon on my desktop it opens almost instantly, but if

I click on a desklet it takes about 2-3 seconds to open.

Possible ? :)

#243347

a) What is one thing you really want to see in future versions of AveDesk?

From the direction I see you going in 1.2, a progression away from desklets/widgets to more icon handling/shortcuts/drives that you are currently pushing. Nothing does this as well as Avedesk and its a welcome function to the desktop.

No to autosaving! I am glad when I mess around with a theme to the point I'm not happy with and then just shut my pc down and my original reloads. I know I can load themes through the right click property, but it's just something I prefer to have control over.

B) What is the main thing irritating you in AveDesk?

Nothing irritating, just would like to see a more focused direction for the app. It is at the stage in development which is pulling it in 2 ways. I know you can dev it too do anything, but I wonder where you really want to go with the app.

c) What is your main usage of AveDesk?

As mentioned, handling all desktop icons etc. Widgets are handled by either kaps, konfab, or [Widgets when beta testing it].

d) What do you think is the best aspect of AveDesk?

Resource usage, speed, and its developer. Not sucking up :P just you listen to what users want.

@Hobbes: Those things are already sorted in 1.2 :)

#243349

Hi Ave,

a) What is one thing you really want to see in future versions of AveDesk?

Many things that other ppl already said...

Multilanguage support would be great, as in miranda, with just using a text file and avedesk fans over the world translating it.

B) What is the main thing irritating you in AveDesk?

That i cannot select multiple desktop icons and move them around together

c) What is your main usage of AveDesk?

Well, it completely replaces my windows desktop and is a wonderfull fella for yzdock, objectdock, etc...

d) What do you think is the best aspect of AveDesk?

It's a great approach to go more in the apple (stylish) direction

e) Anything else....

auto saving YES or NO ?? Its easy: make it an option !

Continue with the excellent work :)

greets stevie

#243355

hi

a. themes and changing them with right click. and one more I have laptop in home network. drives from deskop and their desklets properities can be changed only from AveDesk cp not like others right clicking

b. still clicking every desklet one by one to change desk style. even saving metod is less irritating.

c. drives, trash, iTunes controls.

d. pngs with transparency and sublabel info.

e. about autosaving great metod. could be reset settings to last save variation. when something go wrong you don't have to restart pc only click and you can start custo' again

f. thanks for all your apps and work. greatings

#243357

I couldn't resist to add my $0.02 as well:

  • a) What is one thing you really want to see in future versions of AveDesk?
AveDock with drag'n drop from dock to desktop and back ;)
  • B) What is the main thing irritating you in AveDesk?
Inconsistent context menus across desklets; Also additions / alterations don't seem to reflect immediately on the control panel. Did I rename that thing? better close and reopen control panel to make sure...
  • c) What is your main usage of AveDesk?
Icons and widgets - totally replaced all desktop icons. Still using Konfab, though.
  • d) What do you think is the best aspect of AveDesk?
It hosts both scripted (slow) desklets and fast C++ ones...
  • e) Anything else....
I like the way it goes: It can be anything. Also thanks for not introducing the .Net runtime into it. It still runs excellent on a 600 MHz Mini-ITX...

#243409

How about when a cd is inserted, iPod or removable device inserted, or other stuff like that, AveDesk automatically creates a desklet for it, and you can disconnect them by dragging the icons to a trash desklet or something like that. (sorry if this was already mentioned or featured in the new Avedesk)

A- When I save files to the desktop, they sometimes appear underneath Avedesk icons, and are hard to select. Maybe have a way of bumping other icons and such to the next available grid spot unoccupied by an AveDesk icon/widget.

B-I guess this is tied to A,but I sometimes get random crashes for no reason (it's pretty rare, so I don't worry about it too much.)

C-Desktop enhancer, show all my drives and most important folders

D-memory usage is low, I have found myself colsing out Konfabulator in favor of similar desklets in AveDesk.

E-keep on trucking. This is one of my favorite applications, and I actually use it too.

[edit] E (continued) There is one thing that I think would be nice. Maybe some sort of theme manager...Right now, you can select to save the configuration, and it just saves it. It doesn't give filename otions or anything like that.
