[Link] Konfabulator for Windows

i just did a comparison of AveDesk 1.2 b6 and Konfab ;)

But i ain`t gonna post the stats, you can only guess :P lol

Heh, well running 8 identical widget on Konfab and AveDesk

Konfab - 72MB's

AveDesk - 12MB's

But its not a fair comparison. Konfab is hosting a scripting engine and rendering these things. AveDesk mainly uses hard coded .dll's which are far more resource friendly.

The benefit of Kaps, Konfab et al over AveDesk is I and anyone else with some script ability can write a widget.

The benefit of AveDesk (especially the very latest) is that it already has everything you need and uses no resources. In this case you can run it happily along side Kaps or Konfab.

can someone else host it please? im at school, and waant it to be installed on my school operating system, but their site is blocked for "freeware and software download". the above mirror's msi file is not a valid installer.

got konfabulator

struggling to download any of the widgets

their site is getting hammered

--> Pe8er u hogged up all their bandwidth  ;)

#227056

I'm really impressed with Konfab, its seems to run just as well on my P3 as it does on my eMac :)

#227058

Yeah it works perfectly, i'm pleasantly surprised. Very fast and smooth.

I hope they can get their site up asap.

#227060

I wish there was FlipTunes for Konfabulator ... mmm where's the [REQ] thread guys? Heh, I guess we'll have to wait a while before porting starts. I have no idea how Konfab widgets work

#227061

Very smooth, loving it. But still can't wait for the next version of Avedesk... ;)

#227062

well... Finally konfabulator is here... After awhile trying to download the file (about an hour to log into the page) I get the .msi...

After I install, I say, wow, very nice... but what about the memory usage?... And I see the "surprise"... 5MB to start (with just the clock widget) and about 10MB per extra widget running... !!!... Konfabulator is using +60MB right now!!!. and with *multiple* instances!!!. Ok, no offence, but what kind of programmer did this??.

Looks nice but at what price?. Memory cost and multiple instances running??...

Its ok, I know this is the first public version and we knows what that means (see what I say above :P). Lets give some time and see if this have future...

To me, Avedesk is enough for now, and it works, without paying a high price (in memory terms, and why not, in economic terms too)...

#227063

Pe8er, your desktop is positively hilarious...lol

IMHO, its a good first shot for a company not really at home with windows programming - its slick and functional out of the box and (at first glance) absolutely uncrashable so far. (Hey, you and me are used to windows apps to be crashing all the time, so this is definitely not a beta!)

Some of the shortcomings mentioned above may even be bonusses: The fact that each widget is running as its own process is definitely a plus. If one widget ever crashes, the others will survive undisturbed, while the competition follows the single-thread approach. Memory has been mentioned, but stress tests show that it pages away on demand and can't possibly be compared simply by subtotalling. Paging memory is CPU-intensive so less preemptive paging equals less CPU usage and that may even be a plus for those users who look at their task manager both ways...

The widget settings are persisted into the registry instead of a pathetic INI-file as any decent windoze coder would do. Also, the usage of MFC 7.1 may have been criticized but thats still orders of magnitude slimmer than the .Net runtime, whew. I almost expected a bulky cross compile like iTunes is, thanks goodness this is a real windoze app.

One thing I don't get is that they chose to use their own JavaScript interpreter; maybe they didn't want to introduce ActiveX stuff into it and I couldn't find any trace of the iTunes COM interface in their iTunes remotes - meaning that a MSN remote for example would be impossible to do with Konfab unless they include support for it - get me AppleScript for Windows any time.

I'm not sure if this will kill the competition there's a lot that can be learned from it and a lot that it can be taught - $25 from my pocket is theirs any time of day. Jolly good job.

Yea, this really is a wonderful app. Only things I want is new icons (systray and folder) and the #41 iTunes Remote for Windows...

Edit: and of course a drive and folder widget.

#227094

i just downloaded it. and i did the little arrow on the weather widget, and it did its smooth little animation thing. wow, its a good day for us windows users.

on the other hand konfabs site is REALLY ****EN SLOW! omg, im stillwaiting for the first page to load up so i can get some mini widgets.

and im gonna use ave desk for drives on my desk, and use konfab for widgets. seams like a good balence.

#227098

@icexswipe, MDZ61384: LMAO

@Nico: about your edit. I doubt it will happen. Konfabulator doesn't have to do such things on mac. I don't know if it will change now. Maybe....if it turns out that it's possible to link Konfab to windows hardware meters...I just looked inside CPU Portal Widget.....it looks like Konfab has its own meters or translates windows ones :/

Hey, any recommendations for good txt/xml editor with code colorization?

Can anyone get the itunes widget to work? Does itunes have to be closed first for it to work or does it only work with version 4.7, cause i'm running 4.5?

#227114

I got it running with 4.6 and it does recognize iTunes only if iTunes is running beforehand.

#227118

well damn it doesn't work for me herd, lol. Anyways, I want to mod a timer widget. How do I open the .widget files to mod some images? Tell me herd please!!! :P

#227120

bah

i can confirm that iTunes controler (especially the mini one) doesn`t like MPlugin.

w iTunes 4.7 & MPlugin, iTunes mini won`t even start. Without it, everything runs fine :)

PS iTunes controler (big one) works with MPlugin (most of the time) :/

#227126

aashish13 u can open up the .widgets with winrar

#227127

Sweet, I love you thank you!!! :)

#227128

All widgets run fine for me. Quick word of warning. Things like miniFTPDrop require PHP installed and configured properly. Some others require ActivePERL. But they just don't tell you.

Just an FYI.
