Lindows3 Vs. Any Linux Distro+kde3.1

As drivers are concerned...

Lindows supports a lot that are not covered in the other distros. They test it on a lot of computers and systems and hardware in general. They are able to do this because of the money that they have. MetalMusicAddict, you and I have talked a bit and it sounds as if you have some pretty top notch equip, some of the distos will not support your hardware. My video card has yet to be covered by any distro but lindows (as far as I know i.e. No Lycoris, No red hat, No MDK) PS: I am not sure if you know this or not, but Lindows installs in 7 - 10 minutes from start to finish. NO LIE. 10 Minutes. Mandrake (just the system, no extra software) took over an hour.

My humble opinion is that Linux - Red Hat I mean- is a very clean OS. The icons are better than the ones that come with the XP, some programs are just better than the Microsoft equivalents - The Evolution from Ximian just kicks Outlook's ass bad - check this : http://www.ximian.com/images/screenshots/e...tor-folders.png

and so forth.

Almost GUI every detail is carefully crafted in this OS , and the desktop looks and feels clean.

And most important let's remember that OSX itself is a pay-per-copy linux OS.

Having seen this I cannot wait to see an OSX Linux clone...

lindows to me, seems like this:

based on *MY* personal experience, mandrake is most user friendly, and red hat is king, its just easy to use, not too easy, lets u learn and is nice looking with the new blue curve interface. kde i dont like, but i have to use it for maya because i cant find out how to edit the alt+mouse relationships in metacity/gnome.

so for you, i owuld say your best bet is mandrake or redhat, mostly redhat because its used by ALOT of people.

I use Redhat 8 and it's installation program was quick and painless even if you already have windows installed. I was also quite worried about moving to Linux.

But after it was installed, it was a dream. If you want to install programs, most can be obtained as rpm's which is the equivelent of the windows exe setup programs. Just double-click with the mouse on the rpm, enter the root password (like windows admin user) and ur set. There is even a nice DVD Player for Linux, Ogle .9 works great and does kickass screengrabs.

Gaim and a nice set of office software comes installed. (Gaim can use yahoo, msn, aim, irc just like trillian) The full download is 5 iso's, I burned them to cd's and was in happyland.

I think the main thing people have against Lindows is that there was that transition peroid where the company couldn't make up it's mind about what it was going to offer customers. At first they were totalling riding the Microsoft Windows wave by boasting support for most of the major apps, instead of getting people to use Linux native programs that ran faster and better. Then they went to the click and run idea. My one drawback here is that If i decide I need to re-do my linux install or....(since Lindows gives multiple machine license) I want to install on another machine, I'd rather have it all on CD, than have to download stuff. Not everyone is on highspeed, and downloading a huge office application that's like anywhere from 50-200 megs large with 56k is kinda insane. (unless ur a fanatic)

I think for now since you are not sure about Linux and still trying it, get one you don't have to pay for. Cause if you buy it and then you hate it, that's money wasted. That's why other companies allow folks to download it, they want to make sure people can test it and make sure it works for them. Hmm, if Microsoft did that, they'd go bankrupt.

We (Windows Users) have paid through the nose for our OS'es and now there is a nice alternative. I don't wanna go into the money trap right away. Especially when cash is short.

my gawd... over an hour... it took 3 minutes to install on my system. Thats JUST the linux system no extra crap not even X

And what is your video card.. you say Mandrake doesnt support it. You can always download drivers for the X windowing system... its not like its Mandrake or redhat specific drivers to say mandrake doesnt support it.

Ciricon SRS has the right idea.

an hour to install Mandrake, took me (with loads of packages) about 20 min.

PS. Why are people upsessed with Install time? I mean, this is a whole OS, the base of your entire computing experience, I can wait an hour for that, can you?

Plus, Lindows uses an image, while most distros compile a lot there, making it a much more efficient operating system.

Ive had to fix a couple computers with it and I got to play with them for a little while (dont tell them that, shhh).

You made the exact point we've been trying to make. Why shell out money for an OS you just want to try? TRY BEFORE YOU BUY is a much better service policy. And thats what Linux is suppose to be.

I got Lindows for free, they wanted us to use them in our company's desktops, we went with Red Hat for Desktops.. btw I've heard the Red Hat 9 is about to go gold.
