Widget Wars!
The only widgets I keep on my desk are usefull ones. Now that OD+ has the system tray, my taskbar is hidden all the time so I need a clock that I can always see. I also like to be able to know the weather so that is up there all the time. The only other things I like to keep up are the FTPDrop and Trash Can who's uses are obvious. I never really saw the need for a lot of the other widgets (like all those system monitors); they just seem like an excuse for eyecandy. A good looking calculator and Winamp remote would be great, but I certainly wouldn't keep them on my desktop all the time, so a hotkey would be nice.
Another great widget would be for those USB storage devices so that when you plugged it in it would pop right up as an icon.

What do we need widgets for?
Is it:
a. To monitor certain things all the time (cpu temperature, net status, etc)
b. To be able to use real-life objects in no time (calculator, notepad)
c. To enhance our desktop of the month screenshot
The reason I'm asking, is because I liked Apple's approach with Dashboard. I like Samurize and all the other widget apps, but the widgets I really need and use daily are limited to none; not because I don't find them useful or don't like them, but I don't need them so much as to sacrifice desktop real estate for them.
I like how Apple did it (showing/hiding all at the touch of a button), but I'd like more; to have the option to keep a widget always visible on my desktop, along with my windows (as all widget apps do), in order to please my eye candy desire, or because I need to monitor something constantly.
Have a nice day!

DesktopX 2.2 can do these things. Also, you can use a hot key (default is F9) to pop your widgets to top. Another hot key (default is F10) allows you to toggle between showing them and hiding them if you don't want widgets cluttering up your desktop at all.
hey thanks, this was the discussion i was looking for ![]()
anyway i'm using Avedesk right now and i like it fairly. the things that i've felt as a con being the first approach to the objects/widgets world, are that you need some much typing work to make every desklet run ok and for tweaking it, obviously more when using SysStats; then there is no suite or theme scope, not only as a program function but most of all as design like in Samurize instead.
i think i'm going to try DesktopX tough i have and i had some hardtime with Stardock in the past (i had tryed Windowblinds, ObjectBar etc with mem issues)
Frogboy' post is interesting tough.
i haven't used kapsules yet but i have used samurize and avedesk and just started using desktopX
out of the 3 i have used i like avedesk and desktopX
samurize is nice and all but depending on the settings it seems to use a lot of cpu if you want smooth animations or to use the vis in winamp(this is just from what i played with it just may be my bad conifgs)
avedesk is by far very friendly to use not too much in the settings and stuff but to be able to have a unique desktop very quick and easy i think it does a good job..
combined with sysstats i think it works very well.
and desktopX to me is like the prob the best due to its vast customizeablity and everything the only downside i see is that since you can do so much with it you get lost for a new user. kinda like when you use photoshop for the first time.
i don't think anything will steer me away from avedesk though. although desktopx is very impresive avedesk is my fav.
- Most Konfabulator widgets are in .sit or .dmg files which PC users won't be able or willing to make work.
FYI: As far as I know, one of the Devs of Konfabulator has a script to convert all the .sit and .dmg files into a single type.

Imagine an all inclusive contest, for new widgets only, that spanned across DesktopX, Samurize, Kapsules, AveDesk 1.1 and SysStats. We could theme the contest as a tribute to the mighty "Apple Dashboard vs. Konfabulator War" thats happening on the other side of the OS fence.
Any ideas guys? Who wants to go find some prizes for this?

Why hasnt anyone followed up on this idea? I will be more than willing to get the Kapsules community website (and members) into this. Send Frogboy an email and im sure he would dive into this head first (as a means to promote DesktopX)
isn't this the thread that killed a-s for a couple of days just without the super flame posts?
no it isnt....

Frogboy is behind it, I think AndreasV said he was behind it, and I'd have to talk to Samurize about taking part.
For the most part, this is on hold until a little more time passes. ![]()
Ah thats too bad. I have an excess of free time coming up too, and this would be a good thing to distract me for a while ![]()
Guess its not so bad, have some things in the works for Kapsules atm.
Indeed would be nice to see... I know a few at skindojo who would like this also ![]()
