What Will Happen To Avedesk

You are not using version 1.1??  thats whats wrong.  Version 1.1 uses no memory at all!  only 750 k right now.

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

That BIG a difference in mem usage (20-30mb in v.1--> 2mb in v. 1.1, wow that's about 1/10th)? Could that difference be true, AndreasV, what do you think?

Maybe I should go and try then new version!

Questione:

Guys, do you still use your dock (be it Y'z, OD or Moby),

with all those widgets on your desktop?

p.s.: Andreas, are you Dutch?

#203984

Can be true,

PS. Andreas is Dutch :woot:

I'll use whatver suits me best. I mean, some folks swear by one vector app over another, but when you get down to it, the person USING it has to decide what works best for him/her. Personally, whether it's pay or freeware, doesn't matter to me.

@wiebeest - I still use my dock ... I have some very handy folders on it currently [10 in fact] and it's nice having them easily accessed whether an app is fullscreen or not ... a simple mouse over the edge and it pops right up.

2,1 mb for 1 HD widget.

That's alot better than 20-30 mb I reported with v. 1, isn't it.

Now I can play along with the modern-machine guys.

But still I can't wait 'till X-mas when I get my Athlon64 system.

p.s. AndreasV, wiebe est ook Nederlands ;)

Once you have set up your theme properly and saved your config, and set Ave to boot with windows, you will notice a marked decrease in memory.

As I said, I have now 10 widgets running, and its using 1,880k. :D

AveDesk will crush Konfabulator.

For one thing, AveDesk is FREE. Konfabulator isn't.

Secondly it's not just that most Konfabulator widgets won't work on the Windows version, the problem Arlo faces is getting widget developers.

Mac users don't use ZIP, for instance, they use SIT or DMG. How many Windows users are going to muck around trying to figure out how to get a DMG file going when they can use AveDesk (or Kapsules, or Samurize or DesktopX)?

Visit: http://www.widgetgallery.com

Let's just pick the last 3 widgets that are up there:

Widget #1: It's a wallpaper changer. While the widget might work on Windows somehow, it's a .DMG file. What do you think the mac users will say if Arlo insists that they start uploading everything in .ZIP format?

Widget #2: It's an RSS reader. It's compressed with .SIT.

Widget #3: Traffic cam. It's a .DMG file.

So even if Arlo manages to get Konfabulator to run many of these widgets, it won't do him any good because he's got to make it so that Windows users can open up thse .DMG files and .SIT.

And at that point, the user is going to be wondering why they're hassling with that when there's all these free programs that can do the same things.

Ask yourselves how many of you are going to be willing to muck around with .DMG files? I've looked into this at length and the ONLY way I know how to do it (MAYBE) is with MacOpener which is $50. And I'm not sure it will work.

I know that may seem like a petty thing - the file format they used to compress their widgets, but I think it's going to be the achilles heal.

If there was no competition to Konfabulator on the PC, then people might put up with that kind of hassle. But they are facing entrenched competition.

@frogboy: you cant open .dmg's on windows ;) but on the otherhand sit is quite easy to open.

Exactly. You can't open .DMG files. And while .SIT can be opened, you have to download an extra program to do it.

There's lamers like me who won't even mess with RAR files because we're too lazy to go and install WinRar. And lots of things use RAR. Some percentage that is less than 100% will be willing to go and download a de-SIT program just for Konfabulator.

So like you said, .DMG files are off the table, so there goes half the Konfabulator library. The other half are .SIT files which require downloading a special program which I suspect most users will say "it better be bloody compelling" and at that point AveDesk looks pretty nice as an alternative.

If presented with Konfabulator for Windows or AveDesk, I know which I'd choose - AveDesk. And I say that as a registered user of Konfabulator for the Mac.

Foolish earthlings!!!

Morbo will conquer you all!!!

MUAHAHAHAH!

(for those who not know - Futurama rulez :D )

You have a point there.

Though I don't know how much OSX and Windows differs in the code.. so just uncompressing an already made widget for OSX and then porting it to Win will not be that easy..

I think ultimately they'll make a Windows section from scratch with their Windows widgets...

#204109

What's to say they might not make it so Konfabulator extracts widgets out of DMG files?

Anyway I think it's a bit too early to pronounce Konfabulator "defeated". I'm going to try it out first before I make a decision here. It will be nice to try out konfabulator widgets that are not ports. ;)

Besides, I get no support or right to suggest things with freeware applications. Not that I'm always asking for that stuff. I found certain popular freeware programs to not do the things I was wanting them to do.

#204137

I think everyone would be wise to just wait until its released before making a ton of assumptions about it. A smart developer pays special attention to what people say an application's flaws are, and I can imagine that Arlo is jotting down a ton of notes in an ego-driven fury of ink and graphite.

While Im sure that Andreas is lovin it ;) this all seems to me like a high school pre-football game pep rally.

The fact remains that preference will always shift for some, and some will always remain loyal.

#204145

Interesting.........well I enjoyed reading everybody's replies up to this point. I guess that I am probably wrong about what I had originally though regarding the choice between Konfabulator and Avedesk. Glad there were some very informative posts as I feel like I definitely learned a few new things about both applications. I'm sure I would see nothing other than Avedesk as an option if I could actually get the thing to perform to it's fullest capapbilites. It's driving me nuts listening to everyone else talk about all the cool widgets that they have running on their desktop when all I can get is Avetunes and my drives to work.....

Personally I've already chosen AveDesk over Samurize and both are free, no way will I start paying for widgets when I already have similar ones on my desktop for free.

Actually, I'm getting sick of the my widget-app-is-better-than-yours threads >.< . It looks like this website should be called widget-soft.org rather than aqua-soft.org ....

not 100% sure but IMO between macscript, no high end language to code portable dlls from mac to pc and back etc.. etc.. I dont see how Konfabulator could be a "fan-stealer" . it will most probably have its own public like Mac users also having a PC and used to the way of Konfab but well there is too much unknown stuff about it yet to say if it will or not be good.

(about DMG and SIT, arlo could go through the hassle of coding something to open those, not sure if those are closed format or not but if they arent... )

Well having never used it I can't actually say it, but I did imply it.

#204499

Konfabulator Kosts money. I dont think AveDesk will get to the money point, at least I hope not. Plus Konfabulator is only for widgets... Ave Desk is for everything... Icons and Widgets....

#204503

i`m sure Ave wouldn`t mind if people donated some cash which would help him with developing AveDesk ;)

You bastard :P.

I will not be moving to Konfabulator unless there are really a lot of things that AD cannot do. But lets face it, Andreas is a freaking genius. Plus, I am sure this community will stay behind our man :naughty: .
