What Will Happen To Avedesk

Seeing as konfabulator is the mother of widgets will avedesk stop developing or what will happen?

#203891

What? Oh you mean when konfab comes out for windows.

Avedesk is pretty different to konfabulator for windows, and lets not forget, barely any of konfabs widgets (current) will work for windows straight away.

#203894

AveDesk already is, and will increase to be, more integrated to windows

than Konfab can ever hope of being, if I'm any judge. There are already

loads of features that represent added value over Konfab on Mac (!) so it

positions itself quite well, I think.

The only advantage that a Konfab for Windows will have is its huge base of

widgets it already has on Mac but I doubt that all of them will work on Windows

seamlessly. (No Airport, no AppleScript on Windows)

I asked the same sort of question when Avedesk was released b/c I am new to this desktop emulation application thing. Samurize was my first so I just thought it was normal to have all the activity that there was at the time at the Samurize section of the board. As soon as Avedesk 1.1 was released you'd think that the plague hit over at in the Samurize section........I'm sure that when Konfabulator is released (when hell freezes over actually is the set release date as of now) most people will drift on over to Konfab. I know I will just b/c I think that Konfabulator is the unofficial king of all the desktop widgets.

give me a break. I am not the least bit interested in konfabulator. They have been supposedly preparing a release for windows for ages... Tell me what konfab can do that avedesk cant? Not to mention they are two eniterly different types of programs.

#203899

Yeah avedesk has a much broader target use than konfab. Konfab is good, on the mac, but do you think theyre gonna be able to make the windows version as immediately good as the mac version?

#203902

I've tested the beta of konfab, it sucks, theres like 4 widgets that work without any problems, like weather and crap, and those ave desk can easily do, actually I think that Konfab doesn't stand a chance anymore, we already got craploads of desklets, and objectdock widgets work too.

Seems like K is coming out soon to windows according to this thread:

Check out this pic of K on windows as well:

When Konfab will be released (if it will be released...) and if it will be

in competition with AveDesk making similar things my choice will be

automatic: I'll prefer AveDesk for the simple reason that I'm a virtual

friend of Ave (I consider me so) and I have never had the pleasure to

have a conversation with Konfab's developers.

Friends must be helped, if possible... :D

#203911

AveDesk will carry on.. as will Samurize, DesktopX, Kapsules and the others.

How the hell did you test the beta version if there is NO beta version yet?? Beta testing hasn't begun yet....:blink:

#203919

I thought beta testing started ages ago?

I've used Ave's Apps v 1.0 for a very short time.

I does look quite good for eye-candy.

But, the 20-30 mb memory usage is quite steep for one disk-drive

on your desktop, don't you think?

(or might I've done something wrong?)

AveDesk 1.1 use's 1MB on my system and I have 8/9 widgets running.

It's improved a lot so I wouldn't judge based on 1.0.

Just checked that thread you posted Ron21... man way to cause some **** for Aqua-Soft.

Arlo now believes this site to be distributing his icons...

herd forced me to remark on this, so here you go ;) :

What I like about AveDesk is the possibility to use lower languages, like C++ or Delphi to code a widget. Of course, scripting a widget is easier and more people are probably able to do so, but IMO there are just some things you can't do very easily to not in a scripting language without writing special COM object for every little thingie that you are missing.

For example, the shortcut (drive, desklet, shorcut) desklets are actually pretty advanced widgets: they don't poll for changes, but receive notifications of changes only if there is actually something changed . This way, you have very low overhead.

Another thing is that C++, Delphi widgets are able to create different threads when needed, so the app/widget itself won't be blocked.

It's nice if AveDesk will be capable of scripted widgets, but to be able to run C++/Delphi widgets is IMHO a must too.

So much for the technical yada blada, Konfab is having a good reputation on graphics/widgets and they have - in this community - the magical mac thing. Because Konfab is pushed out of the market by Apple's Dashboard - or, is at least getting a free built-in-the-OS concurrent, what other can they do than speeding up the Windows release?

Anyhow, AveDesk will be developed as long as we enjoy it, konfab on windows or not. In fact, I never heard of Konfabulator when I first developed AveDesk, so don't tell me it's a clone :P

PS. DesktopX is the mother of widgets, not konfab >.:D

PS3. Never trust a guy named Al.... what sorta name is that

#203934

Why oh why do people hate me

edit: Because you are getting an iPod Mini :6 ;)

#203937

To be honest; I don't see Konfabulator as a threat at all.. It's much more resource heavy than many report AveDesk to be, and adds widgets (most of which are very, very useless). AveDesk seems to be more of a desktop replacer to me.. Where as Konfabulator clutters it up. Which is why I love Dashboard, because it's there when I need it, and when I don't - look, clutter free desktop.

And there's the fact Konfabulator will cost you like it does for us Mac users.

And Ave's not half bad. (*Waves tincan* ;))

Come on.. all you were doing was starting trouble. Why would you go to the konfab thread and post a picture of avedesk? Its just rude. I dont have much more to say about this other than people should think before they post. Way to go ron 21

You are not using version 1.1?? thats whats wrong. Version 1.1 uses no memory at all! only 750 k right now.

one thing is for sure about avedesk, it will dominate in the long run, as long as we keep ave fat with wine, women and fine moroccan brown.

#203962

I know you didn't but it lead to some guy named ZiRE piping up about it.

/prerapes for a long. long reply...

Konfab the "mother" of widgets. As numerous others have said, Konfab wasn`t the 1st and obviously it won`t be the last. AveDesk is one of the things i`m proud of in my life (even though it was written by my slAve :P ). I`ve seen it grow and develop from a simple drag-dll-on-exe, to a full fledged mofo program with zillion desklets which enchance my productivity and give me such amount of iCandy that sometimes i wanna lick my screen  . Will Konfab's release affect AveDesk? Obviosly yes, but how much? Very little. There is one crucial thing that differs them - money. AveDesk is free and it offers as much as Konfab (probably will). Ave is depending on people's donations while Konfab forces you to pay for it. This is one of the things that give AD a headstart. 2nd thing is that AD allready has over a year in development and what is more important TESTING where Konfab has ages in the works but none if any testing. 3rd but i think the most important thing is that i personally know Ave (well "personally"). This guy has so much potential and sometimes he simply stuns me. He could be next Bill Gates (well without geeky looks and sucky programs :D ) He's stuborn and hard working which all, along with a HUGE amount of personall trust and friendship give me a bunch of confidence to say that Konfab, no matter how good, will ever push out AveDesk.
