The Official Mac Os X Tiger Looks Hideous Thread

I think Apple totally bombed the GUI on this version of Aqua. Anyone else agree with me?

#183900

Err.. Maybe...

It's just a preview and it's not being released until 2005 so a LOT of things can change...

edit: But yea.. I agree.. ;)

#183904

I agree too

it looks terrible

and dashboard looks like a kids playroom, apple dropped the ball on that one..

hopefully they will change it

#183907

I don't think Apple bombed in the sense that they did something wrong. I mean, from the previews, everything looked pretty much the same as before, with some small exceptions, like the system preferences window. I didn't mind the dashboard graphics--the only thing is that they're not really "aqua" as much as "realistic," I guess.

I think Apple bombed in the sense that they didn't change anything--both in the sense of graphics and in features.

What really bothers me is how these new features apparently warrant a new release. An improved search? Are they -kidding-? How much of an advancement in technology could that possibly be? That should be a free add-on download that they created in their spare time, not some big feature. Um... does anyone honestly have that hard a time searching for things on their computer? And what else is there that's new? Better iChat? Woopdy doo... the fact that the program is hardcoded to limit users to x number of simultaneous chats instead of shooting for however the user wants to try is just dumb/gimmicky programming, not software insight. Automator? Big deal. How many people are actually going to use that? What else did I see, a firewall? Big deal, and pretty irrelevent at the current time, since there aren't enough Mac users for any Mac person to worry about Internet-based attacks.

Am I missing something? No better graphics, lame new "features"... I mean obviously they haven't shown everything yet, and they're probably still adding things now, but justifying a $150 or whatever price-tag with that crap is just really confusing at this point.

I really wish they would have gone with a more metalic look instead of liquid crap look... I mean, the titlebars look ..alright... but the finderbar at the top makes me sad. I wish they could have come up with something as beautiful as the panther.

Huh?? That looks nothing like what's at Apple.com.

For example: http://images.apple.com/macosx/tiger/image...op_20040628.jpg http://images.apple.com/macosx/tiger/image...s1_20040628.jpg (the glyph dealies)

#183968

well thats what the finder bar looks like for sure... maybe the pc was on drugs or something when it took that pic...

#183972

Heh. ;)

I have some gripes with Tiger's GUI myself: they started to make it more consistent by losing the stripes, but they added extra junk like the new search in Finder and left the brushed windows (which doesn't really go with the new gloss look in my opinion)...hmm...

This is almost getting philosophical or something. :dr_evil:

Yeah come on Apple drop the whole Aqua look that made OS X famous and loved by millions. <_<

I've swung around to rather liking the changes, and to quote a friend 'UI changes don't matter'. And he's right - people should stop assing over pretty petty things. The Menubar and UI can be themed, I'm sure there'll be Max's Panther theme out for Tiger - and Dashboard let's developers create their own widgets. So regardless if Apple ship fugly ones, there'll be good looking ones out in no time.

And just a note; Apple aren't losing Pinstripes (as maybe a few think from the snaps), some windows (like System Preferences) have "elongated" titlebars. Personally I love that touch, bringing more metal to the UI and balancing it out with the Aqua-gloss Menubar.. I even quite like the blue-caps now that I'm used to them..

Man, me, too. I so wish there was a loaded version of Jaguar for Shapeshifter.

Anyway, I think we have to give them the benefit of the dount till we see the finished product. It's not as if they've put out an *ugly* gui since OS X debuted. Call me nuts, but I'm sure 10.4 will be a far cry from ugly.

#184092

dude, i like it. i already changed from panther to smooth stripes. atleast untill some one release a tiger vs.

maybe ill start an official mac ox x tiger looks good thread ;)

I think "Hideous" is a little harsh, especially considering they didn't really change a whole lot.

#184154

What happend to the fast user switching????

And whats with this K rap about "they didnt change much" this is a small preview, OK, this isnt it. give them theyre six months they requested, sheesh.

Nothing. The Tiger shots/videos just don't have FUS enabled in the Accounts preferences.

but if you do have it enabled, where does it go, to the left of searchlite? its to much crud over there if you ask me ;)

Here ya go.

Jaguar ShapeShifter VS for Panther

I'm sorry, I'm having a hard time believing this is the "final" version of Tiger. Look how long Apple took to release a "good" pic of Panther. Also, if you look around Resexcellence at the themes being hosted there, you'll see a lot of "similarities".

I wouldn't be surprised if this was just another 3rd party theme. I'll be upset if it isn't. I'll be more upset if they really ruin OS X w/ this build. Maybe I'm just too happy, but 10.3 is amazing. Its everything I've ever wanted in an Apple OS. I agree w/ some people though, is this next build worth buying? I mean, Panther had HUGE upgrades from Jaguar (from the core itself), this one just looks like a bunch of new "pretty features" I don't know if that warrants another Buck Fifty.

I'm sure though, this isn't anything yet. I'm surprised they even have this out on the official site so soon, its a YEAR away.

Some of you people worry to much, there was a thread like this going on when the first Panther betas came out. Now (almost) everybody loves Panther. It will be more than likely that the same thing wil happen with Tiger. It's a first public beta, try to keep that in mind.

Spotlight is always the right-most item. ;) And 3 items, date, FUS and Spotlight wouldn't seem to take up that much room.. *Shrug* Personal preference I 'spose.

#184202

Didnt panther look just like the beta though? I dont think they are going to change the GUI much... but I sure hope so

#184271

Firstly I think you guys need to slow down a bit, this isn't a final release and I'm doubting that Apple would show all their tricks straight away - we all know how strict Mr Jobs is about secrecy.

As for the Aqua look - I also feel that concidering we have had 3 different looks so far Apple arn't going to buck the trend....

We haven't been let down so far with OS X and I doubt that will change WHEN Tiger is released.

[edit] also why is it that no-one I have ever talked to on Webcam looks as good as the people in their screenie :P
