Longhorn Questions
Can you render to surfaces natively using Avalon, or do you still have to utilise D3D's APIs to do surface-level rendering?
Or has the whole 3D rendering paradigm of Longhorn been changed?
Somehow I have a feeling you're not really expecting him to answer that, hu Stevie ![]()

Actually D3d's were never utilized, it based on a new xml api layer that runs through MS .net components layers. (sounds like an uber souped up java eh?)
The kernel has the .net calls embedded in all native drivers compiled, along side the core kernels (3 kernels plus 12 sub kernels are used, all in seperate memory spaces hence the hefty requirements for your PC)
I can help answer any other Longhorn questions- I had the beta for a short while. (To be honest, I wasn't impressed. <_< )
Wait a sec. The final release of Codename Longhorn will most likely not be like the beta. Codename Longhorn is at least 3 years from release and I don't even think they know what type of file structure they are going to use (they are starting from scratch). So to have anyone claim that they know what will be in the next version of Windows is ludacris.
I got the 4051 alpha a couple weeks ago, it really stunk, there were loads of bugs, ie didn't download correctly, all this crap that kept on freezing, and i still use it,
errrrr...well at least its installed on another partition, so that i can brag about having it, even though i don't use it.
about the loads of bugs and "stunk"nes what do you expect? its alpha and years and years away for being finaly released.. give it time.

What you're talking about is XAML, and that has absolutely nothing to do with surface rendering in Avalon. "All" XAML does is provide a way to definitively mark up the layout of an application, sepearate from its functionality.
@Quazimodo - Of course I'm not - I already know the answer, after having been playing with and developing on Longhorn since the PDC. The point, however, is that it's an interesting question, and one that Microsoft themselves have actually been talking to developers about how they should do that sorta thing (much like the rest of Longhorn).
My point, though, was that all of the important stuff in Longhorn is under the covers at the moment (Avalon, WinFS, Indigo, etc.), and no amount of looking at the UI and answering questions about the UI will give you an indication of the final UI in Longhorn Release at the moment.
guess i'll stick to my comments
Heres a list of bugs!
1. Memory leak in Explorer.exe & IEXPLORE.exe.
2. Driver problems.
3. Limited to no functionality.
4. Log-on screen looks good in all, but it will take it some time to load the actual log-on promt.
5. Program compatibility does not work most of the time.
6. Alot of the stuff they have on the os just takes up space! There is no real function for most of the stuff!!!
7. Where the hell is the whole WinFS File System!? THE FILE SYSTEM IS NTFS!!!
I rest my case... not exactly peacefully  .

Ye gods, how many times do I have to say it?
Longhorn is still in alpha!
WinFS is there, but, as has been said by pretty much everyone else in the world so far WinFS is not replacing NTFS - WinFS provides higher-level indexing services. If WinFS isn't there, why is it that the applications I've made on Longhorn using the WinFS .Net namespaces work? ![]()
As for all your other problems... Of course there are memory leaks, driver problems, "limited" functionality, program imcompatibilities, and bloat - it's a bloody alpha!
Before you start trying to comment on how crap an OS is, remember where it is in its development life cycle, and what you would expect at that stage of development.
Longhorn, as it stands, is much better than some of the alpha releases of WinXP, in terms of functionality, features, and reliability...
In short, who the hell gave you the idea that it would be a stable, usable OS?
It's a bloody alpha. Get over it.

You know, there's always something I wondered about England. Why is everything bloody over there? You're imperialistic, so I guess it makes sense...
i think its more because we're too polite too use f*u*c*k*i*n*g like you brash yanks.

Not me - I just think there are times when it sounds much more right that the "F word".
BLOODY MOLE!!! BLOODY MOLE.... WE'RE NOT SUPPOSED TO TALK ABOUT THE BLOODY MOLE BUT THERE IS IS STARING ME IN THE FACE......
umm ok back to LH
i have been using longhorn for quite some time now, I have whipped it into behaving and performing better than it does from a fresh install, the 2 most importaint things are.... Disabling the sidebar ( which is the source of the memory leak) and Disabling the WinFS service.
Here are 2 guides on tweaking Longhorn 4051
http://69.50.228.116/Chris123NT/PDC_4051/LHGuide.html
and
http://users.pandora.be/aldatillian/LONGHO...TweakGuide.html
If u really want to keep the sidebar, instead of using the built in one i suggest using SmartbarXP, at www.smartbarxp.com
I kept a watch on my memory usage, and right after a fresh install before tweaking, mem usage was at 387MB of 512MB.....after tweaking it is down to a more reasonable 132MB.

They use bloody over in the netherlands?
i expect they say something in Dutch you idiot! ![]()
I heard Windows Longhorn was slow because of a lot of debug code in it........
please don't kill me... it was very slow on my computer...

That would be part of it, yeah, along with the fact that it's not been optimised that much yet.
Now, repeat after me, everybody:
I will not use alpha software and expect it to be stable, fast, or compatible.
I will expect it to be slow, buggy, and, most importantly, still in development for another year at least.
Yeah dont expect Windows to be fast... even the relased versions!
Windows Longhorn (4051) was very nice... copied some features from Mac....
Oh well I guess the Sh*T hit the fan again
To be honest, why is anyone (other than developers who need to see pre-release versions using it? Do you gain anything other than l33tness? To be fair, it seems that most people here are just using it to have a poke around and see what it's like so far. But really... Oh sod it, whats the point in me saying this when the thread starter has disappeared? Sorry, but silly buggers like inuYasha up there do get me a bit cheesed off.

That's what I've been trying to say since Longhorn was announced.
There're only two people at Aqua-Soft with legal copies of Longhorn, from what I know, and only one of those two people has a valid reason for using it.
It's a developer preview, and, as such, questions and comment related to Longhorn, at this stage, are only really valid if they're development related.
I got a copy of Longhorn Alpha 4051 from a friend, and I was impressed. I'm using XP at the moment tho, because I cant find a firewall program that works in Longhorn. Anyone here know a Firewall program that works in Longhorn? ![]()
Longhorn is slow, but there is a site (not gonna place here, just in case
) where U can download tweaks which speeds up Longhorn dramatically. I would never use longhorn without the tweaks.
Sky
Oh no my friend, longhorn is extremly fast if u tweak it just right. Whenever downloading or trying to download longhorn, make sure, that you're downloading longhorn lite
. It disable the most mem usaging processes. I got it. Longhorn went faster then my xp, but was a little too unstable for me to use. Plus, i like my skinned xp more then lh with a slate or luna theme
.
