I'm a big fan of 80's music that was a time of quality music, and not the "mr. hankey" we got now.
But my collection of 80's rock is small so I was wonder for the non-youngins out there if they have any artists, albums, or tracks they recommend.

It depends where you look, Tim.
You might like some of the stuff I listen to - it's fairly new, but very underground, and some of it has a slightly "80s" flavour to it...
Also, don't confuse hip-hop and rap, people, or I'll break your legs.

Ive been buyin "Best-Of's" lately. Journey, Stix and Chicago are some recent ones. 
adam ant stuff was tight, also the stray cats had quite a unique sound (now known as the brian setzer orchestra). The police, the who, althought those are just 80's closer to the seventies. Big country was fun. oingo boing, i could go on and on
Highly reccomend the police, altho Its more punk. And the Sexpistols, theyre great. AC/DC is amazing, but I guess you have that.

are you looking for what people generally think of when they say 80's music, because you can go in a few directions... the trixter/whitesnake/poison 80's... the A-HA/Men Without Hats/Monroes 80's... etc. etc. OOORRRR you can get into the fun dancerific of MC Hammer or C&C Music Factory!!!

Hey Timmie I agree with you completely. I feel that nowadays good music is rare, musicians are becoming bussinessmen, not 'artists'. I love that plastic sound of eighties (especially in electronic music)...
My suggestions: The Cure, The Police, OLD Genesis (with Peter Gabriel), King Crimson (2 periods: 1969-1974 and 1980-1984), Siouxie and the Banshees, Japan (progressive rock with lots of great musicians), David Bowie, Porcupine Tree (english progressive rock).....hmm...what else....maybe old death- and trash- metal? Bands like Death, Morbid Angel, Deicide, Sepultura....it was a gooood time for music, oh yes...
From the other side: MC Hammer, Vanilla Ice and Public Enemy - aristocracy of rap 
Oh! And golden times of industrial! Front 242 from Belgium and Skinny Puppy from Canada - these bands are great IMO.

Hammer and Vanialla ice can barely call themselves rap... They sold out any integrity they had, and Vanilla Ice's attempt at a comeback was just as sold out.
To even mention them in the same sentence as the great Public Enemy is blasphemy...
Oh, and Hammer and Vanilla Ice were early 90s (yes, Hammer released an album in '87, but it doesn't count because about three people bought it), PE was late 80s and early 90s.

i think Grandmaster Flash can take that title, but vanilla ice falls far too short of it... unless you were being sarcastic?
i will side, though, on sepultura... they were good, i think from south america somewhere, brazil?
what about the good ol'fashioned heavy metal, iron maiden, helloween, anthrax ("i'm the man" is a great song!! i have it in my car right now, listened to it on the way to work) QUEENSRYCHE? they were great with "operation mindcrime", one of the best albums of the 80's... and speaking of rap, beastie boys paul's boutique was also one of the finely produced albums of it's time (it actually got crap reviews in it's day, but now is revered as one of the most innovative rap albums ever)

You'd be hard pressed to find any hip-hop/rap on record before about 79, and that'd be either Kurtis Blow or Sugar Hill Gang...

I swear the 80's were sunnier.
The 80's was a time when music was still something that it hasn't been ever since: melodious.
These few tracks are really forgotten today:

Talk Talk - It's My Life (no doubt rereleased it but the original is much better)
Aha - The sun always shines on TV.
I was born in '78, it amazes me how much more "musical" music was when I was a kid, when I compare it to like "System of a down" or Sublime, or disturbed or Adema, or Sum41. All that now just sounds like meaningless blare to me.
I just don't get it maybe it's me, but I challenge anyone to get any one of those tracks I mentioned above and see if it's true.

I dont really like any one generation of music. I would pick 60's if I had to though. IMO 90% of music in the 50s, 60s,70s,80s, 90s,etc sucked.
Face it, POP is not a 90s invention. There are plenty of meaningless songs in every decade.
I was always and still am a Def Leppard fan.
All the way back to "On through the night" in '79 to "X" '02
I've got them all, including most of the hard to find stuff.
I'm also a guitar nut... anything that has a guitar riff in it that requires skill, not this crap that's out today. Grunge was the beginning of the end for cool guitar solos.
And I fail to see the skill in anything out there at all today.
Dave Mathews band has some cool stuff, but still to cheesey.

And the crap they are calling rock and heavy metal today... I don't think so.
Steve Vai or Stevie Ray Vaughn (rest his soul) could kick the crap out of anything out there today... without even breaking a sweat.

but you're so right, in the eighties, there was a small group of prodigal guitarists that never carried over to the next generation of musicians. e.g. you mentioned steve vai, also yngwie malmsteen, joe satriani... how mint were they? (did you notice that 80's vernacular there!)

A lot of these are mainstream 80s songs, but I like them anyways - I should find a way to get Todo - Africa and Survivor - Burning Heart on there and a few of the songs on Flash FM from GTA: Vice City but these two sets provide a good 2 and a half hours of good music that flows pretty well. I've probably missed a lot, so feel free to comment or tell me that XYZ track is on the wrong list or that I'm a nimrod for forgetting ABC song. Also bear in mind that I have separate Michael Jackson, GNR, Metallica and Aerosmith albums so as to not have to choose one or two songs from each since IMHO they deserve more that just that.
