[help] System Tray Gone!

HI all, I just noticed that my system tray has dissapeared! <_<

This, as you can immagine is very annoying :rant:

Does anyone know what I can to do to recover my sys-tray

Please help me :cry:

Sorry if I was too vauge.

First of all there is no arrow, in fact in my taskbar options the option to hid unused sys-tray icons in fadeded so i can mess wit it.

Right now there is just my clock there and nothing else!

I don't know what i did to make this happen, that's whyI'm asking for help :cry: :cry:

well I always follow the philosophy of try the simple things first, is there a little arrow, or slash in your systray, if so click that and see if it pops up for a second. If this is the case, right click the start menu, choose properties, and somehwere in there is the option to always show the systray. If this is not the case, could you post a screenie of what your systray looks like

Ok, what was normally there? It might just be that there are no apps running that would put an icon there. Go into your sound properties and toggle the show icon in systray button, and see if it appears there

I've done that allready not to mention I have avedesk and my soundblaster calbrator open too. >.

Ok, then trouble shooting time. Kill all apps that are running, one by one, see if it comes back. If not remove all startup items, reboot and see if its there. What is probably happening is there is something that is killing the systray, you need to find out what.

I've had that problem too, and I didn't find a way to fix it I've asked everywhere. Finally I had to create a new user and it worked again. If you don't find a way to fix it, just do what I did, you'll find your systray back

Here's a possible solution.

Goto Run and type gpedit.msc

Then in the Group Policy window that pops up, goto User Configuration>Administative Templates>Start Menu and Taskbar

You should find Hide Notification Area in the accompanying window on the right. Check that it's disabled.

This should solve it.

BTW, I just need to add on to that method. You'd need to log out and in again for changes to take effect.

ah yes yes, i thought you misunderstood what I was saying, i gotcha now though.

Mat, did you try killing apps one at a time, or rebooting without any extra apps running?

I've got this from the Microsoft Knowledge Base but I am not sure if it's helpful.

Apparently, what it says is that the icons in the notification area will disappear if high-contrast colour themes are used in XP.

Check it out here.

And the solution is simply to either resize and restore the taskbar, or lock it.

Alternatively, try what Photo678 has mentioned and see if you can find out what is the cause of it.

The running apps are still there but the entire sys-trey has dissapeared!

it definitely sounds like you chose to hide tray notifications. use tweakui and uncheck that option.

you might also want to try disabling ssdp and upnp services, since those are known to cause problems with tray icons.
