Internet Band?

I was thinking today that with the advent of GarageBand, it may be interesting to try to apply the principles of Photoshop Tennis to a song. In other words, form an internet band of sorts.

It would work like this:

1. A drummer would record (either with live or digital instruments) a few drum loops; i.e. one for the verse, one for the chorus,etc.

2. Once finished, the drummer would send the song file and loops to a guitarist, who would record his/her own elements of the song

3. The guitarist would pass the song file and loops to a Bassist, who would record their part.

4. The bassist passes on the files to any other musicians needed, etc. etc. etc.

It would be a fairly difficult but adventrous undertaking. Anyone here interested in giving it a shot?

Im a guitarist and bassist, im all for the idea except i need to know how to get garage band working with my mbox, i could always use Pro Tools but i wanna get the drum loops goin aswell!

Is the idea to keep it strictly GarageBand or could the the musicians keep adding onto a wav file? That probably would doom it to a bad mix, but it'd be accessible to more people.

By the by, it was nice to see a post by Stevie BM without Topic Closed under it.

Check out a duo called The Postal Service. They're two DJs/artists who made their entire album by corresponding over the internet, then mailing what they worked on to each other (hence, The Postal Service). When one would finish a bit of a song, he would send it back so the other could add more.

Kinda like you're talking about - but it is amazing what they accomplished.

So far i´ve been trying to record my bass in the PC with a minumun noise, but still far from achieving any usable recording. BTW... i´m bass player, if i get my PC to work OK for recording i warn and we can try this... really good idea.

myself and a friend of mine are actually in the process of creating a program which allows musicians, to play real time with others online, with the ability, to record, join in, or just plain sit and listen in on a session, it is far from being finished, if it ever will i dunno, if anyone would be interested in this let me know.

This would be an intresting idea. Both to be a part of and to see it happen as a viewer.

I would like to help, but I am on 56K and it would take me forever to contribute. I play Guitar, Bass Guitar and Clarinet (sue me). Well, that I play that I own instraments for.

hopefully you will finish... an old roommate of mine had the same idea abot 5 years ago but let it fall flat on it's face. basically going into different "rooms" and it allowed everyone to hear the different instruments with each person the option to record it live.

Since we deal with mostly PC and some Lucky Mac "0wn0rz" why dont you

guys look into Propellerheads software? I had an "Audio I" class last semester

in Reason. It's a great prog with alot of potential and excellent crossplatform

transferability (sp?) PLUS the file sizes are super small!!

The interface is one of the coolest i've EVER seen too! Check it out just for that.

The singer is from the band death cab for cutie and the DJ is some chick. They're not both DJ's. The band "The Rise" have been doing this for some time now, since their keyboardist lives somewhere in europe.

OK, we need to address some issues.

I realize that not all of us have GarageBand, but on the same token, not all of us have Propellerhead, Acid, etc. The main conflict here is not whether the recorded loops will work with the different programs (they of course will), but the actual file that stores the info on the loop arrangement. As far as I know, none of these programs can import these song files from other apps. In this light, we need to establish a common app to use (Unless someone can figure out a clever workaround).

Next, we need to get volunteers to lay down the tracks. I can play guitar and also do vocals. I am a fairly decent singer, and am willing to write and sing words to any song written. First however, we need a drummer to lay down the tracks. Any volunteers?

EDIT: A possible workaround might be to mix-down the song after each stage and export it to WAV or MP3. This would ensure compatibility, but also severely limit the freedom each artist has in manipulating the loop arrangement.

I've heard alilm's voice before...rather good, although kinda quiet. But that was just cause he was drowned out by the guitar.
