Stop The Insanity

Perhaps quality over quantity is the answer. We have so many different groups (admins, mods, developers, news posters), not to mention the new "Contributor" group, which is virtually pointless.

You want my opinion? Get rid of the 50 or so groups and pare it down to three- admins, mods, and developers. These are the people who are the core of this community, and while the news posters and the like do help out, I see it as pointless to 'reward' people with badges as a means to get them to post. The admins made a decison to give out all sorts of badges a couple months ago, and while not as out of control as the "Senior Member" and "Aqua-Guru" days, there is still a very large element of chaos.

Rewards asscoiated with posting and recognition make no sense to me. The more we reward post counts, the more pointless spamming we will get. Personally, I liked the 'Respect' feature a lot better- at least with that feature, a person was held accountable for their post quality, not their post quantity.

Amen 2 that Photo678. I´m quite new here, but i have to admit that i find a lot of the new threads started pointless and unneccessary to be honest. I´m not capable of coding programs like many of the other fellows here. But if i appreciate the time and effort people do put in their work. I would be sad if the people who made this place what it is would leave because of its becoming. well, thats just my opinion for what its worth.

GodPunk the respect feature is gone, there might be something in IPB 2.0 so we'll have to wait then.

I would add it back again but it was being abused aswell. Seems every damn thing does here... >.<

I agree 100% with this remark...

As to getting rid of other badge holders is concerned, what i can say is that usually, the "badged" members are the ones that follow the rules and keep the boards as they should.

I know i probably dont have much of a say anyway as im not one of the serior members in the community, i do drift offtopic from time to time and i am considered to be a "flooder" or a spammer by many other members, but i still think, that in a great scale, the badges do impose some kind of respect on the newer members and that badge holders are deserving of such badges.

As to the newsposting, i must say, puting a teaser could be considered as innapropriate and i can tell you it will not happen again, i agree with the fact that news are news and should be not biased by opinionated comments, im sure whoeer has done so, would have appreciated a pm with a constructive critique in it (i for one am open to them, shoot).

I do not agree with news not covering companies and such, point one nespost that has talked about a company that members of this community cannot relate to; soda? it was a newspost about ITMS if you think about it.

My 2 cens anyway...

I hated "respect", no one used it properly, and I wasn't surprised.

The Slashdot system works much better, though I know that's not possible.

#106105

It is contra if you want to code it for us. :6

The member groups will stay

You guys do know when people post in the off topic forums it does not effect their post count.

I've turn it off on all forums but the ones people post quality stuff in.

But if you do think about it.

Only Admins and Mods should have the badge since they are the only ones who have the power to take control.

I'll see what goes on with them tonight, I'll leave the groups as is. We will not turn this into a group fest like it was about a year ago that was insane and was unfair.

#106108

I must add to that also many mods are here doing absolutely nothing...

Seriously, the boards are being run by Timan, Stevie, Contra and Godpunk. Honestly.

And given the 12000+ members we have, each mod needs to "manage" the average of 10 posts per day of 3000 members. Yes, i have worked it out

I think there should be a change in mods... or at least shake up among them...

I am sorry if i sound unruly/irrespectful (word?) but its what i think.

#106109

I promise to do my part by stopping posting so much junk as I have been doing lately. I need to get some excersise anyway. So that's about it, I really have nothing to contribute here except the occasional help/attempt at help.

:)

Come on everybody, lets take these bs posts to therealdookie™, where it was created for. Yipeee!!! :D

Thats where all the video game/card game/noefex type threads should go -_-

#106116

we don't really need additional groups. i just see it as a democratization of the board.

it's going to be impossible for the admins and mods to babysit the forums all the time. the members need to regulate themselves, but maybe that's asking for too much.

#106133

Yes, I agree with dreamz in that respect. Mods and Admins can't be there all the time to babysit.

I think it's not really external control of the members (i.e. by mods and admins) which we are really hoping for here. What we are really hoping for is the presence of net etiquettes in members, of knowing what to post, what not to, and when to show respect and observe their own behaviour.

#106144

I will also try to stop to post irrelevant posts. And I agree with Seph. This community is too large for the active Mods/Admins right now. I see Sid on here and there, and others sparcely.

Maybe there should be two groups of Mods. One with higher athority (can Close, rename (for error purposes), move topics), and other to keep people in check (have Mod status, can rename topics, and move topics, but cannot close). This will keep the staff to have too much power, but will still be effective. I think this should be the time that some Mods get another chance for the few that had made mistakes (I am not pointing any fingers.) Maybe in general, a staff reconstruction.

It seems the temporary deviation from Aqua topics is a repeating phenomenon.

Someone on Neowin or Hardwaregeeks posts a screenie and mentions Aqua-soft,

we get a huge in-fluxs of new people, enthousiasm builds, pointless threads abound.

Then after a few months the interest wanes off, most noobs lose interest and leave. Leaving only those noobs that get "hooked" and start contributing, then they become veterans, and new noobs arrive.

Then the veterans get real jobs and leave Aqua-Soft (Goku, Iceman) and then the whole process repeats.

And yet within this process there are very few true old Aquafying legends, i.e. ones that started back in '99, five years ago and remember stuff like Doug Hoxworths page, and Dangeruss's Winqua WB skin that was deemed illegal. They kinda form the backbone.

Didn't we have this discussion last summer aswell?

nice "clean up";)

#106158

I guess I wil have to stop posting threads such as: Snow Everywhere, what about you?

And also newsposts I will keep limited to these forums, unless people enjoy when I post stuff from slashdot, but some think it is off topic (Contra) therefore I deleted my last post about Linus and SCO.

I think that mods need to become a lot more active (already said) especially in areas like the General forum. Even I, even though I have been around a while, make unruly threads and pointless posts. I agree that if a community does not vary its subjects it wil just slowly fade away because peoples ideas change about things. I have tried posting some of my wallpapers in here and no one has really cared about them because they werent aqua-related. That may change sometime but for now I will just post at dev art.

#106161

Juno once we get a cms setup for the site and have different sections for the site you then should post stuff like that. But till then I guess stick with customizing news? :/

#106163

thumbs up Tim, i liked the cleanup ;)

the only thing i`d like to know is, why were news put in the bottom of the page?

shouldn`t they be the highlight of the Forum? (i know there is a FP, but i jump straight to forums)

as for some of the tension i`ve been feeling from Photo about Speh posting a preview of my DarkSide config, i`m sorry. I really worked my as$ off to make and test those 30 configs, and i thought i`d share my hopes with memebers of my fav community (note that i didn`t say website/forum). It turned out that some members didn`t have any respect for my work and as a begginer it almost made me give up both AS and skinning. But thanks to my friends (whome i`ve met @ AS) i decided that AS means me more than few bad/rude comments. i know i`m a ****ie here (i`ve been here for only a year) compared to some of the veteran members as you said it Photo, and i know that i`ve been posting some stupid crap but i don`t think that a complete sterilization would do well either. Skinning is art (or at least i see it that way) and artists are different (and i just have to mention that little "Think Different" slogan) so a military-like site wouldn`t do skinning community any good. Diversity gives options, options turn to opportunities. However i agree that things are getting a bit out of control. I don`t want to disrespect any of the mod/admin staff but only few of them are doing their job. I agree that Tim should find some help to keep AS the way it was when i joined (a relaxed but not out off control atmosphere), where skinning/theming was the main "bussines" and making friends was a very important part of being a part of a COMMUNITY.

No need for this thread anymore, everyone got real changes made. Feel proud :P
