Punk isn't about how you look. Need proof? OK:

Anyone can look punk, but not everyone can be punk. You can take any preppy on a shopping spree at Hot Topic, and although you might make them look punk, they are still a preppy inside.

That's why punk is a mentality, not a fashion statement.

I'd say anyone who needs to classify themselves into a group isn't exactly a "punk" or "rebel", but someone who's looking to belong.
