Longhorn Ie

Searching around for news on Longhorn and came across www.coullion.be and on the news page is a link to a download of IE 6.05 (The version currently installed by Longhorn, soon to be IE7) for Windows 2000/XP.

I went to check it out as the Longhorn one includes a load of tweaks to make IE much better than it currently is (most of these are in SP2). Sure enough it downloaded but instead of an installation file there was a zip that setup the folders.

I opened the iexplore.exe (I checked it for virii first obviously) and it took ages to load and was basically a reskinned IE6 (The same as savanna is). All the skin files are saved in the graphics folder (including the about box), if it wasn't so slow I'd skin it myself and use it as a replacement for IE but it is soooooo slow.

Note: I have used Longhorn and although I can't connect it to the net, even complicated programs load faster than this clone.

I was just saying in case anyone was looking for a longhorn IE that's all, and the advise that you shouldn't use it cause it's crap.

You didn't even post a link to it, so in what way are you helping? But the program you're telling us about is in alpha stages so you expected it to run like Safari or something? I really don't see the point of this thread sorry..

it's possible that IE will never become version 7...

Microsoft have said at some point or other that htey are not going to be releasing new versions of IE for windows XP or earlier. If you want IE after version 6 you'll have to be running longhorn when it's out.

@XP_2003, i think Acaeris just wanted to put out in the wild the fact that the IE that's running around for Win (non longhorn) is fake. he's not making assumptions or anything... because the one in the wild IS fake.

@Ludge, MS is releasing 6.05 features for orther windows when it comes out tho.

until ie becomes more like safari or konquerer, i'll be using other browsers. regardless of how much "better" it gets, and i use the word better loosely, because it is way behind even the 0.7 release of firebird

SP2 will be equivalent to "6.05", as it's called in Longorn.

No, Microsoft have announced that they are releasing SP2 for IE 6 on all platforms which support IE6.

Later versions of IE (Longhorn will likely have Version 7), however, are anyone's guess.

What I meant is there is a version of ie going around that people are claiming is the one from Longhorn 4051.

The truth is, it's not. Someone rebuilt the interface to support longhorn style skinning. (Like savanna supports safari style skinning).

I'll rephrase that, I didn't mean no updates, I meant no new complete versions, as in no IE7 or 8.

I thought they just said "for current versions of Windows", but I may be wrong.

If they are stopping it for good, then more fool them. T'is a shame, though, IE is a nice (simple) browser, even if it's not as competent as Firebird or whatever.

It'd be nice to see IE as well-done as Safari (even if Safari's KHTML engine is crap at rendering - I'm talking in terms of usability/functionality).

Oh c'mon Steve, IE is not competitent in any way.

1. It lacks ANY modern features, and is only just getting pop-up blocking.

2. Its rendering engine is all wonky. It cant do CSS properly. My guess is that the engine is so old and messy (its MOSAIC after all) that it would be really hard to fix it.

3. The interface sucks. The preferences are impossible to navigate. What makes the IE's interface so "nice"? Its got buttons, an address bar, and (optionally) a bookmarks bar. This is different from other browsers?

4. Its insecure. C'mon, look how many security holes it has. Obviously a problem because you cant get rid of it/stop it from running.

And no, the only "new" IE (not little updates) will be in Longhorn, and won't be backported, they've said this many times. The only thing I REALLY care about is the CSS problem though. I am so sick of that. Everything else (security, et al) isn't my problem.

I said it was nice in that it was simple - 99% of users don't have to worry about a browser. They just use IE, and it's easy - they don't care about tabs, they don't care about integrated search bars, they don't care about skinning.

That logic is so flawed, it's not even funny. You are saying Windows is better because it has LESS features! Don't you realize I could apply this to anything? Why dont people use LINKS, that has even less features? A GUI will just confuse people.

The features we are talking about are ones that AVERAGE users will want. Pop up blocking, tabs, etc. We aren't talking about pipeline rendering or some other thing (except for CSS, which does affect the enduser indirectly).

I have switched my parents, and many other "average" computer users to Mozilla, and they couldn't be happier (well, it doesn't dance). Why did I switch them? Because they were complaining that IE was missing "feature X" and it annoyed them. Mainly pop-up blocking.

IE is not simple. Just look at the preferences menus! Half the options most users wouldn't understand. If you want simple, try Epiphany some time. The entire browser from the ground up was designed to be simple, and it is. It still has all the "necessary" features, but it keeps everything well organized and easy to use. Not to mention it follows an actual HIG . I've been reading the Windows HIG, and IE doesn't follow it at many points.

Okay Dumbasses (no offense, just a joke), I have Windows Codename: Longhorn Proffesional PDC 4051 and what can I say but simply two words: It Sucks. IE is all perty and all and so is explorer.exe (My Computer, My Documents ect.) but they are both flawed. MAJORLY. They both have memory leaks up the ass, and that Longhorn IE "clone" was made to mimic everything in LH PDC 4051's IE; so there you go. If you want to ask me something else on LH (even though no one asked me in the first place) just PM me.

As for them being flawed, they're part of an Alpha release - Alphas often have bugs.
