Toshiba To Ibook Trade-in

All right, long post. If you hate reading this kind of advice-seeking thread, my advice to you is: don't.

So anyway, I have some potential buyers for my Toshiba laptop... at a price that could get me a brand new 12" iBook. Let me give you the specs for each and perhaps you can give me your opinions if you're interested. First, I do not do heavy CG work, gaming, or web authoring. I'm an economics student. I use the musheen primarily for statistical analysis and general purpose academic stuff (software: EViews, Statistica, MSOffice, modding stuff :) ). The machine I have now is much more than I need; I was greedy and rich when I bought it. Second, I need something portable for work, this one weighs A LOT, so I'm keen on a 12" with good battery life (sounds like a massive vibrator). So, here are the PC and iBook specs. If this were your PC, would you switch?

Toshiba specs:

model: Toshiba Dynabook G4/U17PME (Japanese version of Satellite)

P4 1.7Ghz

512MB RAM

NVIDIA GeForce4 440 Go (Toshiba)

40gb HD

15" UXVGA (by god the display is beautiful)

CDRW / DVDrom

Harman / Kardon speakers, even a subwoofer: best-sounding laptop ever

AV out

3 USB 1.1

Internal SD and Smartmedia card slots

2 PC card slots

other standard stuff

Purchase date: nearly 2 years ago

Purchase price: about US$2,650

Sell price: about half that

iBook specs:

800MHz PowerPC G4

640MB DDR266 SDRAM [128MB onboard + 512MB SO-DIMM]

30GB Ultra ATA HDD (i have an external, no problem there)

CDRW / DVDrom

crappy iBook speakers

Firewire + 2 USB 2.0

AirMac Extreme (wireless networking card? these are not internal?)

Bluetooth (is this useful?)

other standard stuff

Purchase price: about $1,450 (minus student discount) = ?

Without the AirMac Extreme and the Bluetooth the price drops to about $1,300 - student discount.

So, thanks for reading, now what do you think?

Well,

1.- c.mon, which one is nicer looking reaaaaaaaaaaally?

2.- Can you spare teh screen? i mean going form a 15'' to a 12'' must be tough!

3.- The speakers are not such a big deal, they sound good (ibook ones) havent heard the toshiba ones but i think the ibook has H/k as well.

4.- Youll prolly get more batery life with the ibook than on the toshiba, i really think so.

5.- Beliveme, the operative system is DELIGHTFUL, there is no goiing back, im telling you ;)

6.- The usb 1.1 ports on your toshiba? they are obsolete! where are you going to connect your external to a 1.1 when you could connect it to a 2.0 or a firewire? dont think so

7.- If youre not going for gaming, the downgrading of the GPU wont be that big a deal for you.

8.- A mac with that ram is prolly equivalent to a pc with a gig, trust me, my G5 when i got it whith 512 felt faster than my 1 gig of ram, athlon xp 2500 PC, doubling that... well.. you can guess.

9.- Yes it sounds liek youre a very demanding person in need for a big fat dildo

I would say: GO FOR THE iBook

The iBook would be the deal to go for. ;)

Well, frankly speaking, other than the downgrade in terms of screen size and the processor speed, the others more than make up for the loss. To make things much simpler, you're making an exchange of older technology for newer, and possibly better ones.

Consider...

- USB 1.1 for firewire/USB 2.0

- bluetooth

- potential DVI output (with adaptor that is)

- extra RAM (on a Mac)

- full integration between apps

- prettier interface

You may disregard...

- crappy iBook speakers (there's always the option of getting JBL creature 2.1 or the Soundsticks :naughty:)

- HDD (you have the external HDD already)

- Battery life (Oh well, get an extra battery to go along if you must. ;))

Hmm... anything else?

Anyway, same conclusions as Seph.

Switch... ^_^ and wait for me to join you.
