1. What version is best?

a. None. They all differ only slightly, and even then, it's opinion. There are some distributions geared toward beginners though, like Fedora and Mandrake.

2.Advantages.

a. I could go on and on. What I find to be its biggest advantages are:

freedom. You have complete control over your OS, down to the source code. If you want customizability, linux is it.

Security. You wont have issues with viruses, spyware, or any of that crap. Of course, you should still run a firewall, but your system is naturally more secure with any version of UNIX, because of its strong permissions system.

Stability. Linux really doesn't crash. Even with bad drivers, your system is going to stay up. One program cant bring down everything like in Windows. And we're talking Linux stays stable with THOUSANDS of users connected at once, try that with Windows.

Power. This goes with freedom. There are loads of professional apps available for linux, all free. No need to spend money on Photoshop, VisualStudio, and others. You can use GIMP, GCC, etc.

Strong Community. There are many linux-help sites out there, and the documentation on linux is great (except for some APIs, but thats a different rant).

Its Not Microsoft. Need I say more? (sorry, had to troll).

3. Sites of interest.
