Win2k Upgrade To Winxp

So i got one pc at home that still has win2k on. it´s a thunderbird 1.4 @ 1.6 machine and so should definately be compatible.

Now i got an OEM copy winxp prof. at home and thought i do an upgrade. And all the installer tells me is: "cannot upgrade from Win2k professional"

ok, so what is the problem, please help

OEM copies usually do not install as upgrades at all. They are intended for clean installs.

even though the cd has that update checker on it?

The update checker check for new installation files so that you have the latest version of WinXP.. it really only meant to fix flaws in WinXP

To upgrade you need either the upgrade version or FULL store bought version of WinXP. To upgrade you will need an earlier Windows CD or Windows already installed on the machine.

But OEM versions of WinXP like jrkarp said are usually not upgrade versions as they are intended for release with new systems. If you format the drive then set thte BIOS to run the CD at startup WinXP will install flawlesly.

I would advise a clean install, upgrades leave all the old files there so your computer gets a bit cluttered. My version of XP is a upgrade student license so its alot cheaper but I still do a clean install every time its so much easier.

i know that it´s better to do a clean install, i just hoped, that i don´t have to backup 20 gigs worth of data

anyway thanks

Backup sucks, but a clean install of XP will be well worth it! ;)

Yup. Overinstalling windows isnt worth it.

PS. have you concidered running 2 different OSs on the same computer? You could use partition magic to divide your HD into 2 and install XP on one of them. So you wouldnt have to leave Win2k.

Oh well.. your own choice :)

and plus, reformatting is fun, it gives you the chance to start over with your modding, and its a great time to completely change your style. Thats what i did

I must say i agree that upgrading sucks.. I just did it, and everything was slow as hell.. Dialogs and stuff like that could take many seconds before they came up, so i definitly recommend reformating :)
