[question] Itunes Setup

Not an incredibly interesting topic, but here it is anyway:

I just put about 20 gig of albums into an external drive, then set the iTunes Music folder in this new external drive so now it's "f / albums".

Anyway I deleted the old iTunes library in the 'My Music' folder on the c drive and restarted iTunes, so it's reading the new location and setting up the new library.

And, well, it has been doing that for about 45 minutes already.... and I'm just wondering.... since I have NOT set iTunes to organize my collection, what the hell is it doing that takes so long? (I know working through USB 1.1 is going to be much slower than through the internal HD, but still.... this is crazy.)

Check the picture below and you can guess how long it will take.

Sorry for this longish post, but maybe a couple of you have some idea?

Whenever you load music into iTunes, it will read the song to calculate it's volume, and work out how loud or quiet it will need to play it to keep it at the same volume as everything else (in other words, it normalises the inter-track volume of your mp3s, for a better listening experience overall).

To switch this off, go to the "Effects" tab in the Preferences, and uncheck "Sound Check". The only downside of this, though, is that some mp3s may sound quiet, and other may sound loud. If you can wait, let iTunes carry out it's sound check - it's worth it if you let iTunes shuffle through your entire collection.

The reason it's taking so long, then, is the fact that it's gotta load up one song at a time, "listen" to that song, calculate how loud or quiet it should be, close it and do the next song... This, obviously, will take a fair while over USB 1.x

It took me about 5 mins on an xp3200 with raided 7200 sata drives for 30 gigs, so yeah it takes a while. It will go MUCH faster if you take of the auto volume limit option. Other then that i say go get a sandwich (mmm sandwich)

Mine did it on the go, I stuffed about 20gig's of MP3's in it and it started doing that but I was still able to do my thing, even playing the MP3's in iTunes.
