I just got a 15.2" 1.25 PowerBook, DVD-R, 80GB HDD, yadda yadda. Really liking Panther, but to be honest I couldn't switch completely. There is nothing that stands out when using OSX or the Mac which seems better or worse than Intel/AMD + XP. Just different.
The whole switching thing isn't as good as it seems

Hehe yeah man i tell you i have been in with microsoft for over ten years now. And i mean in i was beta tester and microsoft partner/oem for long time.
I have found in the last few years that Microsoft has become very sloppy in their products and dealings with Customers. Security what a laugh they wouldnt need it so much if they fixed their products properly before releasing them.
So i emailed Microsoft and said look i am no longer going to be working with your products or running on your platforms as a result please take me off all active programs.
I am very excited about switching and am looking forward to a long relationship with Apple. hehe

hey man if you're talking about pc users i am one (and so is probably 90% of the rest of aqua-soft) why would we be making windows look like osx if we had osx. btw makki (or macci which in an italian accent is pronounced machi i think.) if i remember correctly even the $799 emac has panther. check store.apple.com and can i have your pc when you get your mac? (i hope he says yes so i can sell it on ebay :naughty: )

Having supported Bill Gates for some 10 or so years and never wanting a Mac due to the issues they had. The time for change has come for me.
Once Panther came out and after some detailed research, I finally purchased an iBook 14" G4 machine with the iSight and other accessories. The conversion wasn't as bad as I expected but fun nonetheless.
It will take some time for me to get to the system administrator's level on the Mac but that isn't a problem either. Working as a systems administrator for other OSes is at least a building block and except for some minor differences a computer is a computer.
I should do fine.
For those thinking about the move, I'd say do it. At least you can market yourself as having skills on both platforms.
The one issue I have is the limited amount of support for applications with the Mac, but that too is changing and is a welcome sight.
At this rate, I foresee myself buying a G5 single processor for starters on top of the three self built machines I have running Windows 2000, XP Home, Professional and Linux. One thing can be said - there isn't a dull moment regardless to what OS you are using. Constant change, good for the soul.

I read that article that silencedge posted and it was very interesting.
"Apple is also cooking up a 64-bit release of Mac OS X. Both of these operating systems are expected in the first quarter of 2004."

Mac OS Rumors has laid out their version of the PowerPC roadmap with some interesting comments:
- The PowerPC 976, the first dual-core 97x chip based on the POWER5 architecture, will probably ship in mid-2005 and will also be the first PowerPC to use the VMX2 vector ("Velocity Engine") instruction set; VMX2 will vastly increase the range of applications that will benefit from AltiVec/Velocity Engine-optimized code as well as the performance of that code. In particular, watch for Apple to tout VMX2's impressive 3D graphics performance.
- The single-core PPC 980 will be Apple's workhorse high-end processor beginning in early 2006 and variants will probably still be powering low-end Macs until nearly 2010.
- In late 2006, the PPC 985 will take over the high end of the Mac with a return to dual-core architecture based on POWER7. By this time IBM and Apple project that the cost to performance ratio of the PPC 9xx family will be no less than 5X that of any planned or otherwise likely competitor processor from Intel.
- Although processors after the 985 run so far into the future as to be impractical to speculate upon, one notable feature mentioned in internal Apple documents is "the ability to emulate Intel architectures with performance no less than 2X that of native solutions."

Aye, ThinkSecret are much more reliable for rumours. And congratulations Makki! A friend of mine is hoping to get an eMac soon (in fact any Mac would do, he says) and I'm joining the Lucky-Mac-Owner club very soon!
It would be nice to see a 64Bit Panther or having 10.4 to have the option of installing a 64Bit version for use on G5s.
