To Mac Or Not To Mac, That Is My Question

ok, so ive been saving and now have enough to get an eMac, Yeeeaaaaa!!!!!

so now i come to the inevitable question as i always knew i would.

to get the mac i have wanted for so looonnngggg or just conform and upgrade the "mr. hankey" out of this comp, i love the look of the eMac and panther looks so sweet and i know id love using it especially for Photoshop but games would be a no go, i still have this pc for games but i cant play any new ones coming out now, so the question is, do i get the mac and use the operating system i just love the look of, or upgrade the pc with a 17" LCD (17" LCD would be so sweeeeettt) , huge hardrive, big vid card, dvd burner (the works basically). i cant afford an iMac so thats out of the question.

why not upgrade the hell out of your pc or buy a new one

and keep all the windows compatiibility we love and hate

and aquaify it? theres alot of new system mods coming out that will give windows the mac look completetly

i woulndt buy a mac they are nice as hell dont get me wrong but

i dont think they are worth the money i guess it depends on what you do with your computer....

for programmers music video edit freaks mac is heaven

for regular computer tasks i think is better to stick with a pc so much "mr. hankey" out there made for windows and not mac

irc the super store keeps me up to date without hurting my pockets (Y)

Waste a $100, and rent a mac, (if yall got rentway or something) one near me has all sorts of macs you can rent for a week and what not. Just rent one try it out if you like it, go out and buy one, if you hate it, you just saved your self a grand and upgrade ur pc.

Regardless of how wonderful the mods are becoming here in AS, too much modding will kill your pc and slow it down (my pc is an athlon XP 2500+ with 1 gig of ram and a very good MoBo as well as video), after going to the mac, i could definitely see how big the gap in terms of responsiveness.

I do webDesign and print media, the colors on a ma are 1000 ties better and PS and IR run better on my new dualie

First sort out your priorities:

Want to play games? keep your pc until you dont feel so eager to play games

Need it for a special type of work? (webdesign, printed media, grpahics design, 3d rendering) Keep the mac -altough an emac wont give the BEST results around it will be definitely bettern than a PC-.

If you have any more specific questions.. ask, i have the switching sentiment still lingering and could answer a lot of your thoughts..

PS: I miss Picasa, iPhoto does not compare!

@Seph: I've got to agree. No matter your system specs, the mods just don't get close to that running on the real thing. Tried it out at the nearby Apple retailer, and *phew*, it was a hell lot of difference.

i would really like to know were i can rent a mac i never seen one on rent-a-center or rentway?

i messed around with a mac before and you can see the diffrence between the pc and mac shiet i would love to rent one to test it out because it gets played out when you go to your local computer store to mess around with a mac (Y)

any links t owere i can rent one will be appreciated

Let them know your intention is to get a mac. I'm sure they'd be helpful then.

You know...I have spent weeks here...checking back all the time...working at customizing my PC to look exactly like a Mac. I've finally got to the point where I decided to sell my laptop and buy a PowerBook. By this point I am completely familar with a Mac interface on my PC. I've been using it for the last 3 or 4 months without change and I would never go back to an XP look.

However, when I went to check the out a Powerbook at a Mac store, I was really disappointed with the carity of the screen fonts. I was shocked at how much better the mods that the people in this forum have created look than the real thing (!!!). I know it is hard to believe but the fonts on a real Apple screen compared to the LCDs I am using with my PC are all choppy and rough around the edges. They just don't have the sharpness and clarity I have become used to.

I ordered a Mac from a store that I am easily return it to if I am not happy with it. I'm going to try it for about a week. But I don't know if I am going to stick with it. It could be that the mod authors here have done such a darn good job, most of the reason for switching is...gone.

(If anyone from Apple is reading this you should really compare your displays and fonts to those on a PC. Especially SMALL fonts.)

are you high?! lol, sorry to disagree, its your opinion and i respect it but look im running a modded pc and a mac side by side with a KVM(keyboard VGA and Mouse) switch and just by switching (on the same screen ) from windows on to a mac, or viceversa, the diffrence and the clarity specially on the mac is incredibly noticeable.

I hope I am wrong! I just got to look at the laptop for a few minutes in the store but that was my impression. I have a top quality 20 LCD at home that I am comparing the quality to. Do you have a good screen for your PC?

I'll update my comments once I've had a chance to actually work with a Mac for a while. If I like it...I'll switch.

Having spent 6 months following the antics on the boards, tweaking installing upgrading and fiddling.I was convinced I could get all the usability of a mac on a PC but alas only a not bad paint job.

I've just done the same thing and gone for an emac, 600 of your uk pounds with educational discount (I'm a teacher).

Lets face it PC's are rubbish I've been building them and fixing them and fire fighting them since 1990 and I'm sick of their continued obsolescence lack of compatabilityand they look like there unfinished.

I can't think of another product where we would put up with so many major interface and operational flaws, Macs aern't perfect there just the best I've seen so far. This is the first time I've ever spent more than £100 on a box of switches lets hope it money well spent.

In answer to the question of course you must.

As said, KVM switch both the pc and the mac are conneccted to the same screen so wether is good or not (samsung syncmaster 17'' flat, not very good) doesnt matter because they are tested under the same screen.

I just press scroll lock 2 times and then switch from the pc to the mac and vicevers,a beleiveme, going back to the pc for even the slightest task is sad.

You have to compare the machine on the same monitor to make a fair comparision.

Those powerbooks will hook up to external LCDs or CRTs no problem btw.

I have a 12" pbook and I find the quality of the fonts rendering (especially in Panther) to be superior to what I got on my PC (before I sold it). The right brightness setting makes all the difference and be sure to try out all of the smoothing modes in system preferences to see which one works best for you.

One more thing... those demo units might have the smoothing turned off for anything under size ten fonts. You can adjust it to not smooth anything under 9 points. An 8 would be a blurry mess anyway.

iBooks will do it just fine too... It's just not stated. But you do need an adaptor to do that though. (If I do remember correctly.)
