Just keep bumping it up by increments until it becomes unstable. I'm assuming you're overclocking because you want better performance in games? Bump up the speeds, test it in a game to see if you get artifacts or tearing. If it's stable, keep going up. When you start seeing artifacts back down a bit and test again until everything is running smoothly.
ok, well i bumped up the core and mem by 1 mhz each (the coolbits tweak sets the frequencies at 0, so i guess these are additional mhz). i tested it using the test button, and my computer died.
Are you saying that your card was set at 1Mhz core and 1Mhz memory when it crashed or are you saying you bumped the frequencies up by 1Mhz from the default?
The default core/mem for a Ti4200 is 250Mhz/500Mhz. Start there again and bump up by 5Mhz increments or so.
i bumped both up by 1mhz, tested, but then i got a blue screen, but it was shaking, the letters and numbers were so distorted, it was unreadable, and i couldn't do anything but manually turn off the computer.
the numbers start at 0 and go up to 100 or so, so it definitely isn't the values for the core/mem per se, but the increments of overclocking.
it's a graphics problem i have. doing graphical activities like watching movies makes my computer slow. scrolling and dragging windows around lag severely. the only solution to this is reducing hardware acceleration by a notch, but my computer is slower as a result. is this a problem with the video card? it's persisted despite several reformats.
an interesting note: leaving hardware acceleration on full, after experiencing the slowdown, i can make it relatively fast again by playing with the display settings, like toggling the resolution.
that's why i wanted to test the frequencies to see if it would fix it.
Is this overclocking for gaming?
EDIT: what are the rest of your system specs? I run DVDs and divX movies and such on an AMD Barton 2500+ system with 512MB of DDR333 and a crappy little GeForce MX440 without slowdowns, so I don't think it's your video card.

ok, i just checked. the frequencies should be the actual core frequencies, but for some reason, i can only go up to 100. i have a picture, but i can't seem to upload it here.
Be careful. They processors are designed to run at the set speed in normal conditions for a reason. Dont go twiddling around and then next thing you know, youre screen saver burns out your video card

but i'd like to know what the frequencies are set at normally, and i'd like to fix my problem.
The stock clock frequencies for the Ti4200 are in my post above. Uninstall the coolbits registry tweak and just leave your vid card at stock speed. I'm thinking that RAM is the culprit behind your problems, but I'm not entirely sure. If you can borrow a stick of ram from somebody, add it to your mobo and see if that solves things.

try the detonator 45.23 with coolbits . first uninstall your graphicsdriver , then install the 45.23 after few reboots install the coolbits.reg.

coolbits didn't work at all, so i tried riva tuner. i overclocked my card a bit, but it didn't seem to help. even watching a video for a second will make my system lag. so i uninstalled riva tuner after setting frequencies back to defaults.
i have no idea what is wrong.
Have you tried getting the latest video codecs?
You should also follow Ute2091's advice and make sure that all of your drivers are up to date, including the latest Detonators and nForce drivers for your mobo.
Does it only lag down your system when watching movies, or does it happen when you're doing other things?
everthing is up-to-date except the graphics drivers, since i have better performance with 45.23 than with 53.03.
my computer doesn't lag most of the time, but as soon as i start a video, things lag and lag forever, until i restart or reset the display properties (like changing resolution back and forth, or changing color depth back and forth, etc.).
does it happen with every video? or with certain codecs?
what videoplayer software do you use ?
every video, every format, and every player. i use kool-playa primarily.
i don't even have to watch the whole thing. as soon as it starts, i can close it and notice the lag.
how many codecs do you have installed? it could be that one disturb the other.
When overclocking the little proccessor on the vid card, make sure that you can keep it as cool as you can. The cooler it is, the more you can overclock it.
yeah, i overclocked a bit using this pretty nifty program from guru3d, but i didn't help.
i only have the essential codecs installed. i manually installed mpeg2, divx, and xvid.
You do have the latest version of directx installed right? Is your graphics card working at all? I mean can you play 3d games and such easily?
i have dx9b installed.
and my card seems to work. i don't have any 3d games on me right now, but i can play some playstation games (emulator).
but as soon as i exit the game, everything is slow.
Try clicking "restore defaults" in the "performance and quality settings" menu in your graphics driver.
