Your Ideal Config/widget

Hi all,

There have been many fine releases of different widgets in the community, but I was wondering just what would be your ideal samurize widget? (Widgeteers pick up a pen)

1) What would it have to display all the time?

2) What should it display some of the time (i.e. when you want it to)?

3) What theme should it be?

4) What size/shape should it be?

Also, assuming you could have multiple modes (i.e. the widget could be shaded or expanded like winamp or you could scroll through different readouts) what would you include?

Personally, my ideal is different modes displaying:

1) CPU/MEM/HDD/Network Usage/Case & CPU Temps (would have to be two modes: one simple and one advanced display)

2) Media Player Controls (two modes: simple and advanced)

3) Weather

Discuss in small groups

I think that I have my ideal one right now: the multi-pod!

I would also like a config that controls iTunes (play, stop, etc) without having to use another app alongside. So far though, the only solution seems to be using a helper app. Girder I think it was.

If you could find a way to work with iTunes (and not just display info) I'd be super-happy.

1. display all the time: maybe your version of iTunes, player controls

2. current song artist, song info

3. A. size I would assume to be about the same as the foobar controls out there.

B. shape- nothing wacky, rectangular would be fine.

to me it seems like some of the releases are going to a very customizable direction and i think that it is a good direction to go in. i don't think that one widget can be everything to everyone, but where there are five different setups in one package can be very useful. so i look at it like the pod-style release is a great idea since people can use what they want.

Yeah, I've been thinking about that, the easiest way that I can see to control iTunes is by using the multi-plugin (which allows the global use of the media keys, even when iTunes is inactive) together with a Sendkeys function.

Samurize would imitate the pressing of the 'play' button (found on most media keyboards of today). Problem is, I don't think that the sendkeys method in vb is capable of sending any of the media keys, at least I haven't found any values for the media keys... :( as yet...

If some one know of a program that can be used to imitate the play/pause/stop/previous/next keys please let me know!

maybe something like the vertical widget only as close to the look of a real ipod as possible?

even though the vertical widget kicks...*erm* ;)

Something like the Samurize setup in my SS ( Check my Sig ) What would be coolif a person could click those tabs so they move in and out as one asked.. :)

This thread should be interesting... :)

That could very easily be done, but I'd recommend using something like pocketkaos or Alilm's tabber app for something like this, as in essence, what you're looking for is a program launcher.

These apps would be easier to maintain and you'd get the benefit of animations, rather than a simple open/close situation.

But... if you reeeaaally want to do this through samurize, PM me and I'll try to show you how.

Is it me, or would I be right in saying that people mainly use Samurize for media remotes?

Or are people using it to get info on their box?

You're right. Media remotes are nice & easy but somehow wicked. Why would you need skin for a skin? App for controlling app? Paranoia

The reason I asked is because it seems Samurize isn't being used for the reason it was created?

I personally can't live without those bits of info on my machine that have now become essential (I've listed them in the first post), but judging from screenshots it seems that no one else is displaying configs that show anything but media info?

My need for a widget was fulfilled by a mod of mine of Pe7er's masterpiece the G5.

I only needed it to show my ram usage, highest CPU hogger, mail count, and CPU usage percentage.

yes, media controls are nice, but i like them to be very minimalistic, so that i can see them and use them at a first click basis (kinda like the taskbar implemented previous, play and next buttons)

#109629

I personally don't care for system info.

Main reason for using samurize is cause I've been hooked on foobar and foobar skin support is messy , so I've created skin in Samurize . Then I saw some Konfabulators widgets and I ported them cause they look god... Now I have 155!!! samurize configs in my Configs folder and I actually use only one.

#109649

hey CRNI, i read on Macnn forums that someone had sent you an email asking your for files to port your latest pod config to konfabulator. How is that going? I would love to see it on my mac!!!

Just make sure that they keep your excellent level of quality if they do port it ;)

#109653

If that is the case, maybe we should start developing winamp skins, with mouse-over effects, pullout panels/drawers, animation!!

With the new Samurize Server (xml output) we may even be able to have the best of both i.e. import Sam info into winamp skins?

I'm going to look into this... :dr_evil:

My ideal samurize widget would be a horizontal ticker that could be located at the top or bottom of the screen. The top ticker will have scrolling text with 1. Song - Artist info that collabotates with iTunes, 2. RAM usage, 3. Just posted at Aqua-Soft thread title. And the bottom ticker having Weather (today, and future forecast), customizable sports ticker, stocks. I just thought this up in 5 min, so it's not complete. :P

I would also like to see a samurize widget that would upload to my ftp anything i throw at it, to a specified remote folder, there is a Konfabulator version of this but it leaves too much to my desire.

Another thought Tadis and other samurize Masters, windows' version of Konfabulator is supposed to come out soon, any particular views on that? will it allow certain behaviors that are not allowed by Samurize/DesktopX/Avedesk at the moment?

Unless I'm mistaken Seph, Konfabulator runs on Java. So although it might be possible to port the graphics easily, i'm not sure that porting the functions of each widget will prove so easy.

I haven't heard of an SDK as of yet but I have faith in your ability as Newsposter extraordinaire to keep us up-to-date. :D

Another app thats often overlooked is Sysmetrix, I've been messing around with it and it is much more versatile as a media remote it has mouse-over effects and even allows you to scroll through the current track. I even made my own colourful iPod skin based on Panther's original png (see attached) but Sysmetrix's only downfall is it doesn't support PNGs so no alpha channel effects (i.e shadows, semi transparency). :(

@Wizard

I agree that scrolling widgets are the way to go, but (as yet) I haven't found a way to scroll images from within samurize...

Unless you had three or four seperate scrolling text meters placed in a horizontal line with a corresponding pic next to each?
